Many parents have kids that are soon to enter kindergarten for the first time and are wondering what their kids should know before they head out to school on their own.
As a mom who once taught Kindergarten, I always wanted to make sure my kids are well-prepared and ready to begin their school career with a bit of an advantage by knowing their letters and sounds.

Letter game for children 4, 5, 6 years old. Learning letters by playing
Reading plays a big role in the early development of every child, being one of the most difficult skills.
. Already from the age of three, some kids get acquainted with the letters of our alphabet. And at 4, 5, 6 years old, it is good to teach a child to play with letters, for better assimilation and memorization, as well as reading by syllables.

Letter games for 4 year olds
The purpose of these games is to learn letters and even, if possible, start reading by syllables.
- The simplest game is to show the child the blocks. Each die must contain one letter and several items beginning with that letter. For example, a mother shows a child a cube with the letter A, while voicing the drawing: Apricot, Pineapple, Shark. Visual images help the baby to better remember the spoken letter.
- For those who have already learned the letters, the game of syllables will be useful. To do this, you need cubes with letters.
With the help of a parent, the child combines letters into syllables, learning to read: "MA, PA, BA, YES, etc." - Hide and Seek. The goal is to find the letter that mom calls, among many others. The game helps to learn the letter better and faster, and also forms the correct pronunciation.
Games with letters at the age of five
At this age, children most often already know the letters of the alphabet. Therefore, such games will be very informative:
- Draw what it looks like? This game is great for younger kids too. Purpose: to determine what a given letter looks like and draw it. For example, the letter "T" looks like a hammer, and "W" looks like an inverted comb, a fence.
- Do the letter yourself. For this game you will need plasticine of different colors and pictures with letters. At first, the child must sculpt the letter indicated by the mother from plasticine, while you can look at the picture. After a while, the baby should sculpt letters without peeping, from memory.
Letter games for children of six years old
Games for children of primary school age can be selected even more difficult. In this case, you need to focus only on a single child and his knowledge gained earlier.
Good games for six-year-olds are:
- Invent words starting with a given letter. The parent or teacher shows or calls the letter, the child must come up with a few words that begin with this letter.
- The game of cubes will also be useful and will help you learn quickly. Only at this age it can also be made heavier. Add whole words from cubes with letters, learn to read at the same time.
- An interesting activity for the child will be a game called "Fill in the word." To do this, you need plain paper and a pen or pencil. Write several words in a row, replacing the first (or only one first) letters with three dots. Example: ...neg (snow), ...kno (window), ...cola (school), ...salka (mermaid), ...karoni (pasta). Following this example, you can replace not only the first letters, but also cut them out from the middle or end of the word.
- Compose words from letters. Write letters in a scatter, instructing the child to create a word from them. Example: t, a, k, o, s, p, a. Answer word: beauty. One of the variations of the game is a competition between several children who will add more words from one big one. For example, from the word "Alexandrite" it turns out to be: Alexander, Rita, fox, shooting range, ice, etc.
- Putting syllables into words. To do this, you can use all the same cubes with letters, or simply write a syllable on a piece of paper.
Letter games for children 4, 5, 6 years old are very good helpers in learning. They help not only to learn all the letters of the alphabet, but also to start reading and writing. The child develops thinking and ingenuity, the outlook increases. Classes should be carried out taking into account the desire and mood of the baby, in no case forcing him to do so.

Fishing
Purpose: memorize letters, develop coordination of movements.
Age: from 3-4 years old.
What you will need: fish pictures (from bingo or children's magazines/paper cutouts), paper clips, colored pencils or felt-tip pens, string (30 cm long), magnet, ruler (20-30 cm long), tape , hoop (blue scarf / blue rug / blue blanket), bucket.
How to play?
Before starting the game, you need to make a fishing rod and a "catch". To make a fishing rod, tie a string to the ruler, and attach a magnet to the end of the string (you can tie it or stick it with tape). On the fish, write the letters that your child currently remembers.

Now your child, like a "real fisherman", can fish in the lake. The main rule of the game: only that fish is considered to be caught, the “name” of which (the letter attached to it) the child can recognize. The entire catch of the fisherman is added to the bucket.
Pay attention! Before starting the game, decide for yourself how it is more beneficial for your child to turn the fish in the lake - letters up or letters down. If the child sees what letters are written on the fish, then perhaps he will not specifically "catch" the fish with letters unfamiliar to him. On the other hand, if the fish are turned upside down, you can tell the child which fish to catch. In this version of the game, the child will need to remember what the letter you named looks like, and after the kid catches the corresponding fish, he will only repeat the name of the letter written on the fish.
Letters on the back
Purpose: memorize letters, develop attention.
Age: from 3-4 years old.
What you need: No props needed for this game.
How to play?
Play riddles with your child. Simply “write” on the back of the child with your index finger or the blunt end of a pencil the letter known to him. Ask what letter you wrote. Invite your child to write a letter on your back, and you guess. Guess the letters in turn.
In this way it is useful to memorize the letters that the child cannot for some reason learn firmly.
Option:
You write on the child's back, and at the same time he writes the same letter with chalk on a blackboard or with a felt-tip pen on paper.
Mirror letters
Purpose: memorize letters, train attention and observation.
Age: from 3-4 years old.
What you will need: cardboard, scissors, pencil/felt pen/pen.
How to play?
Prepare 2 cards of the same size (approximately 8x12 cm) for the letters the child has learned. Write 1 letter on each card. The letters must be written in the correct and mirror ("back to front") image.
Place a pair of cards with the same letter in front of the child. Please choose the correct letter. Organize an independent check of the task by the child: give him the opportunity to compare the selected letter with the letters from the "ABC" or "Primer". Be sure to ask the name of the letter.
This exercise will help you avoid spelling mistakes in the future.
Letter in the box
Purpose: memorize letters, learn to distinguish letters similar in spelling, train attention.
Age: from 4-5 years old.
What you will need: white and colored card stock, colored pencils or markers, and scissors.
How to play?
Prepare cards from colored and white cardboard of the same size, approximately 13x18 cm.
Colored cards can be used 3-5 pieces, and determine the number of white cards based on the number of letters to be memorized. On white cardstock, write large letters with felt-tip pens. In colored cardboard cards, cut out “windows” of various shapes (round, square, triangular, oval, rectangular): each card has one window. It is advisable to cut the windows not in the middle of the card, but shifting them slightly up or down.
Hide the letter card behind the windowed card. Try to do this so that the child does not see the letter ahead of time. Show the child the box with the letter. Ask him to recognize and name the letter in the window (by fragment).
Pay attention! The same letter can be guessed many times, alternating cards with windows or changing the presented fragment in the window (this is easy to do by turning the card with the window upside down).
The game will help to memorize the graphic images of letters well, not to confuse the letters in the further learning to read.
Letterhead
Purpose: memorize graphic images of letters, learn to recognize the same elements of letters, learn to recognize different elements of letters.
Age: from 3-4 years old.
What you will need: paper (album, notebook, notebook, sheets), colored pencils or felt-tip pens.
How to play?
Write "corrupted" letters (unfinished, with missing details). Tell the child that these letters were spoiled by the harmful Letterhead and ask the child to restore (add/repair) them. Be sure to ask what letter you got.
You can write one of the most common letter elements (vertical line, horizontal line, slanted line, circle, semicircle) and ask the child to name all the letters that contain this element if there are several answers.
