The Dolch Sight Words list is the most commonly used set of sight words. Educator Dr. Edward William Dolch developed the list in the 1930s-40s by studying the most frequently occurring words in children’s books of that era. The list contains 220 “service words” plus 95 high-frequency nouns. These words comprise 80% of the words you would find in a typical children’s book and 50% of the words found in writing for adults. Once a child knows this list of words, it makes reading much easier, because the child can then focus his or her attention on the remaining words.

The Dolch words are commonly divided into groups by grade level, ranging from pre-kindergarten to third grade, with a separate list of nouns. There are a total of 315 Dolch Sight Words.

150 words for HSK 1.

Complete list of words of the first stage.

出租车 chūzūchē… 睡觉 shuìjiào… 怎么样 zěnmeyàng…

Do you already know these words? These are some of the words you need to know at HSK level 1. If you're going to take the test, it's time to memorize them!

If you don't know, HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (汉语水平考试), which means "Chinese Proficiency Test". This is the world's most famous and recognized Chinese proficiency test, consisting of 6 levels. HSK 6 is the hardest level. HSK 1 is the easiest level, covering the basic level of Chinese.

And if you want to test your skills and see what level you are at in Chinese, taking the HSK Mock Exam is a great way to find out. Even though HSK 1 is the most basic official Chinese language test, passing it is still an achievement worth celebrating. Taking tests is generally good for the learning process, even if informal.

Required vocabulary for the HSK 1 test

So, how many Chinese words do you need to learn to pass the HSK 1 test?

According to the website of Hanban, the HSK test organizer, to pass HSK Level 1, you need to know 150 words. These words do not change between tests and you can expect them to appear on any HSK 1 test (although not all 150 words will necessarily appear on the same test).

Here are how many words you need to know to pass different levels:

However, you need to understand simple everyday conversations made up of these 150 required vocabulary words, as well as basic Chinese grammar, in order to pass HSK 1. Level

First of all, please note that this is not a "general list of words for beginners" or "most common Chinese words" in terms of frequency. This is a list of words created specifically for the HSK 1 test.

Let's start learning HSK 1 vocabulary!

Words are organized into separate categories (eg numbers, times, people and places).

11 Chinese words for numbers

Let's start with numbers.

Chinese numerals are important to know. Once you learn how to count to 10, you can instantly count to 99 without the need for additional memorization. (Read more here)

Chinese

Note that although "he" and "she" (or "his", "her") are represented by two different Chinese characters, they are pronounced the same way.

Note both 这儿 (zhè'er) "here" and 那儿 (nà'er) "there". People in southern China often use 这里 (Zhèlǐ) and 那里 (nàlǐ) instead as part of regional distinctions (although these words are all easily understood in China).

Chinese pinyin what/there

7 Chinese question words

Question words like “what”, “where”, “who”.

Essentially, the word order in a question in Chinese remains according to the basic Chinese structure Subject + Verb + Object , i.e. you need to keep the word order in the statement and change the "unknown part" to the appropriate question word.

For HSK level 1, it is important to know how to write an interrogative sentence.

Please note that time in Chinese is expressed in a completely different way than in Russian or English. For example, date elements should be named in ascending order: year + month + day , that is, 年 (nián) + 月 ( yu) + 日 (rì) .

Words such as 上午 (shàngwǔ), 下午 (xiàwǔ), if used, should also be placed in front of the time, to accurately represent the period.

Chinese
时候 shíhòu A certain moment of time

36 Words to designate people and things

HSK 1 assumes that you know 36 existing, produced to people and broadcasts. Some of them are very important in Chinese culture, such as 茶 (chá) - "tea" and 米饭 (mǐfàn) - "rice", so they are often found.

Chinese 很 (hěn), linking word between noun and adjective , such as 我很好 (wǒ hěn hǎo). The literal meaning of 很 (hěn) - "very" in such cases is usually not translated.

Another grammatical thing you absolutely need to know for the HSK 1 test is the use of 不 (bù) and 没 (méi).

ne Questioning particle (and you?)

00 和 (hé) (h gr) HSK 1. Be aware of one pitfall, however! It is much less versatile than the Russian "and" and should only be used for concatenating nouns in Chinese. Never try to connect adjectives, verbs, phrases or sentences with 和 (hé)!

Technically you don't need this, as you won't meet all 150 words required in one test and you only need to score 120/200 to pass the test, meaning you can take a risk. However, these 150 words are among the most basic, essential words you will need to speak Chinese. You should master them anyway and build your vocabulary from there.

2. Do I need to know how to write these words to pass the HSK?

You do not need to write anything on HSK 1. All questions are in the format True or False and Multiple Choice . Also, pinyin is provided along with Chinese characters for all questions on the test sheet, meaning you don't need to be able to read the characters to pass the test. However, it is still recommended to learn basic Chinese characters early on. Hieroglyphs help you remember words better and better understand how the Chinese language works. You can view the list of HSK 1 symbols here.
