Article Dynamic BGG Rankings | all about board games

As you know, the ranks of board games on the BoardGameGeek portal are determined by their BGG rating. This parameter is nothing more than the average rating of the game, from which the penalty correction is subtracted: the more players rated the game, the smaller the penalty. In fact, this is the track record of the game, because the BGG rating takes into account all the ratings ever given to it by the users of the portal.

Of course, this is very convenient - one number can be used to judge what the game has achieved in total. But this is also its drawback - by this parameter alone, we cannot judge the success of the game in a particular period. For example, a new version of a good game has been released. It is better than the previous version, and players like it much more than the old one. But although it gets higher ratings than its predecessor, its BGG rating is lower, because its 200 ratings cannot compete with the 20,000 ratings that the older game has accumulated over the years.

Moreover, we can’t say anything about the current attitude of the players to the old game (like / dislike). Even if she got worse ratings, a small number of such ratings would have little effect on her BGG rating. And, by the way, all the dozens that were once delivered to this game under the influence of the hype raised by bloggers during its release will also remain with it forever!

But still, there is a way to evaluate the change in the attitude of players to games - you need to calculate the BGG rating only according to the ratings made in a certain period. This, among other things, will allow you to see the best new items immediately, and not after months and years, which the game will need to gain a sufficient number of ratings. Here are the annual BGG ratings for board games (only the ratings given to these games in 2022 are taken into account):

Usually, each new game has a maximum annual rating in the year of its release or the next year. After that, it crashes as other new games take away potential new players who might still be interested in the game. But if the game is really interesting, and even more so, add-ons are regularly released for it, its annual ratings do not fall, but, on the contrary, grow, because every year the number of portal users increases, along with the number of ratings they give. For example: the maximum achieved annual BGG ratings (marked with asterisks) for games of the same author and the year when this happened. We see that their maximums do not necessarily coincide with the maximums of the number of players who played these games in different years:

The higher the rating achieved by the game, the larger its star. If this rating is scored in the first year of the game's existence, then its star shines as brightly as possible, in white. The next year, its temperature drops, it turns yellow, a little later it turns orange, until it eventually turns red. Perhaps someday it will flare up again, but there is little hope for this, because every year new stars flare up in the sky!

All-time highest achieved yearly board game ratings:
