Precancerous conditions: what is it and how not to miss it - Prevention - Information

Many oncological diseases do not arise without reason, quite often the human body signals about malfunctions with certain conditions, which in medicine are combined under the general term “precancerous”.

A precancerous condition, or precancer, is a tissue change that is highly likely to turn into a malignant tumor. It should be understood that precancer is still not cancer, and not even its initial stage.

Typically, this category includes benign neoplasms or long-term chronic inflammation.

Although this is not yet an oncological pathology, it is necessary to carefully monitor your health in order to start treatment on time if malignancy (the process of cancerous transformation) does begin. What diseases are classified as precancer and how to prevent the development of oncological processes?

Classification of precancerous conditions

The concept of "precancer" arose in 1896 at the International Congress of Dermatologists and was applied only to the most accessible skin cancer for clinical observation. In the future, it was possible to establish what other human organs are susceptible to the development of malignant tumors. Thus, it became possible to identify precancerous diseases, knowing their localization. Hence the term “cancer prevention” appeared, and rather quickly the diagnosis of dangerous foci became quite popular.

Numerous manifestations of precancer are divided into obligate (mandatory) and optional (optional).

The first group includes congenital defects and genetically predetermined processes in which malignant tumors inevitably develop sooner or later. Obligate diseases include, for example:

  • xeroderma pigmentosa — a chronic hereditary disease caused by increased sensitivity of the skin to solar radiation and UV rays;
  • Bowen's disease - a rare disease of the skin, characterized by one or more spotty-nodular formations on the body;
  • Keyr's erythroplasia is a condition that is a lesion of the epithelial cells of the mucous membranes and skin.

These pathologies are not so common, but if at least one similar symptom is found, it is necessary to consult an oncologist.

Diseases of the group of facultative precancers are characterized by a relatively low degree of probability of degeneration into cancer.

Among them there is a stomach ulcer, a cutaneous horn - a benign formation, presented as a skin growth on the body; Keratoacanthoma is a skin tumor that looks like a dome with a small hole in the center and is characterized by rapid growth and cyclic course.

Provoking factors

The development of precancerous conditions is influenced by exogenous (external) and endogenous (internal) factors. Exogenous factors can be conditionally grouped as follows:

  • physical factors. For example, ultraviolet damage to the skin from sun exposure can trigger the development of melanoma.
  • mechanical factors. These are injuries that are accompanied by prolonged irritation. For example, moles that are regularly injured by clothes, shoes, during epilation or shaving. Due to such exposure, the process of malignancy can begin.
  • chemical irritants. They are divided into two groups: domestic and industrial. In the first case, we are talking about bad habits. For example, tobacco use has a gross irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, respiratory tract; in addition, tobacco combustion products contain many carcinogens - substances that directly provoke the development of oncological processes. Industrial irritants (aerosols or acid vapors), depending on the duration of exposure, can lead to acute or chronic chemical injury, and with regular contact, they contribute to the development of precancerous diseases.
  • biological factors. For example, the presence of infection with Helicobacter pylori (a bacterium that lives on the lining of the stomach) leads to chronic damage to the mucous membrane by the waste products of this bacterium, which can become fertile ground for precancerous conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and the further development of cancer.

Endogenous factors include features of immunity.

It is the state of the immune system that determines the development of precancerous conditions. It depends on the level of protection whether external or internal factors can harm the body and start the development of the disease.

Endogenous factors can also include various age-related changes and genetic predisposition to certain pathologies.

According to a study published by the American Cancer Society, over 90% of cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors. The remaining 10% of tumors develop due to genetic mutations.

Diagnosis and prevention of precancer

The transformation of precancer into cancer can take years, most of the precancerous lesions will never go through malignant transformation, but some progress very quickly. As a rule, this is what experts are trying to prevent. The determining factor here is early diagnosis.

Screening, a detailed examination, allows you to identify precancerous diseases, determine whether the transition to cancer is possible, if necessary, determine the appropriate methods of treatment. For a correct diagnosis, criteria such as the patient's habits, family medical history, past illnesses, and working conditions that may imply harmful exposures are important.

Diagnosis of precancer depends on its location.

If there are complaints, the doctor will prescribe the necessary examinations, if there are no complaints, regular medical examinations will be sufficient as a preventive measure.

It includes standard tests, instrumental diagnostics, as well as consultations of specialized specialists. For each age group, a set of examinations has been selected that is most likely to help detect serious diseases.

So, as part of the medical examination, everyone needs to take a blood and urine test, undergo a fluorography or do a chest x-ray, as well as an ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs. Women are shown ultrasound of the pelvic organs, consultations of a gynecologist and a mammologist, and men - a urologist. Colonoscopy and gastroscopy are recommended for people over the age of forty.

As an alternative to clinical examination, you can undergo a "check-up", an individually selected set of examinations taking into account the characteristics of the health and lifestyle of the patient (for example, for individual diagnosis of oncological or cardiovascular diseases).

In addition, in order to prevent the development of cancer and precancer, you should reconsider your lifestyle: eat a balanced diet, minimize potentially dangerous foods in your diet, add more vegetables and fruits to your daily meals.
