Digital coloring books, a star simulator and a sea battle with students: learning math while playing
Alla Sitnichuk, a mathematics teacher from the municipal educational institution "Stalnovskaya School" (Crimea, Dzhankoysky district), children do not stop learning even during breaks.
The fact is that with the help of interactive technologies, it turns tasks into exciting games and competitions. About whether it is difficult to learn new things, where to look for ideas and like-minded people, and how to create lessons for the future, read in this material.
Mathematical problem
I have been working as a mathematics teacher in a rural school for 22 years. In 2014, we began to re-equip, bring in new equipment, including Promethean interactive whiteboards. For teachers, it was a great joy, but at the same time it was a way out of the comfort zone - it was time to rebuild and master new technologies.
I decided to learn as much as possible how to use the new equipment in the classroom. I began to search for information on the Internet and on the Edcommunity website I found a free online marathon using the ActivInspire program, with which you can create and conduct interactive lessons. The format turned out to be very convenient: one instruction was not enough for me to study, I wanted to see how everything works in real time.
My first training marathon lasted a month. I wrote down my every step in a notebook, so that it would be easier to repeat it later, I drew a sequence of actions with arrows. At the very beginning, it took me a lot of time to prepare one lesson, but by the end of the month I had mastered the basic tools and then I independently studied the program and experimented. I also advise everyone who wants to learn how to work with ActivInspire to start with video courses: it is more difficult to master the program using the “poke method”.
Hard to learn, easy to fight
I taught my first interactive lessons in primary school. I wanted to interest children, capture their attention, and I thought, why not create digital coloring pages. All children love to draw, and this hobby can be beaten methodically. I prepared a special task, where there were three possible answers. The child clicked on the star under one of them, and if the choice turned out to be correct, part of the image was filled with color.
When all tasks were performed correctly, a color picture appeared on the screen. "Educational coloring" has become popular even among high school students - everyone loves to draw pictures.

The next trainer I created with ActivInspire is the "Star Flash". It is designed to repeat degrees. On the interactive whiteboard, children see a picture that shows droplets with numbers. Students must correctly raise a number to a power and choose the correct answer.
"Star Moment"
Children love the interactive tasks so much that they want to study even in between classes. In the classroom, children do not always have time for everything, and I came up with special tasks for them, which they solve during breaks. In them, I include not only mathematical exercises, but also questions that develop erudition. For example: which French artist painted a whole field of flowers? Pupils guess and get points for correct answers.
In the lessons, they also accumulate points for the correct completion of tasks, and then these bonuses improve their real grades.
“Big break”
Another interactive activity popular with children is the “Battleship” game, which I came up with to reinforce the material on geometry in grade 11. Schoolchildren answer questions and, if answered correctly, earn points that make it possible to move the ships forward several cells. The guys are so addicted that they prepare in advance for this game at home.
Lessons of the future
For 7 years I have accumulated a huge number of lessons for different classes - literally all flash drives are filled with them. I do not like to use old developments for a long time, every time I want to come up with something new and fresh. I share my materials on the Edcommunity website and communicate closely with colleagues who also work with ActivInspire. For example, I met a teacher from Kabardino-Balkaria, Alfusya Bahova, who once taught me a course on interactive technologies.
For all teachers who want to learn how to use ActivInspire, I encourage you to register with Edcommunity and follow the step by step tutorial. In a month you will be able to take your lessons to another level.
Last year, Promethean launched the Learn Promethean educator platform. It contains online courses, where, among other things, you can learn how to work with the ActivInspire program. The courses are currently only available in English, but on the company's YouTube channel you can find short Russified video instructions for working with the program.
