Fantastic mentor texts for narrative writing can really help take student writing to the next level. These are compelling read-alouds that you can pull out again and again to show kids “how writers do it.” There’s no need to feel limited to the same titles you’ve always used or the ones your writing curriculum suggests. 1. Together We Ride by Valerie Bolling
This book takes the classic learning-to-ride-a-bike story to the next level. A girl perseveres through fears and falls with the help of her dad. Add this to your mentor texts for illustrated narrative writing. Right down to the dad’s dreads and beard, the stickers on the girl’s bike helmet, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, the artwork makes readers feel like they are right there—and can show kids how to add more of their own details to their stories via drawing.

2. New Shoes by Chris Raschka
A child discovers his old shoes are too tight and heads to the shoe store to pick out new ones. Use this to show new writers how they can tell a great story with just a few sentences. You can also introduce new techniques for illustrations; all these pictures are delightfully zoomed in.

3. Granny and Bean by Karen Hesse
Granny and Bean go for a walk on a cloudy day. They enjoy all the simple pleasures of the beach, like waves, shells, sand, petting dogs, and seaside snacks. Use this to share an attainable example of a strong narrative for younger writers. Each page has only a short sentence or two, but they manage to tell a beautiful story.

4. The Secret Fawn by Kallie George and Elly MacKay
As the youngest sibling, a girl feels like she misses everything—including the deer her family saw in the yard. She heads outdoors to try to see it for herself and ends up having an even more special experience. Use this quiet little story to show kids how to focus their narrative on a small but significant event.

5. Hiking Day by Anne Rockwell
A girl and her parents take a local hike to enjoy all the sights and sounds of fall. Use this to teach about adding more to a narrative by including details, thoughts, sounds, and dialogue.

6. City Moon by Rachael Cole and Blanca Gómez
A boy and his mom take a walk in the city at night to look for the moon. Add this to the mentor texts for narrative writing you use to teach about bringing the setting to life. Also, show students how to stretch one brief experience into a story that feels important.

7. Not Little by Maya Myers
Dot is the smallest person in her family, but she doesn’t hesitate to stand up for the new kid when he’s bullied in the cafeteria. (Clearly, she is NOT LITTLE!) Use this to teach about strong, impactful sentences. Plus, introduce the technique of using a repeating line to show readers what’s important in your story.

8. Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall

A little girl wakes up in her house because music is playing downstairs. She wakes her brother, and they sneak downstairs to find their parents dancing in the kitchen. Their parents welcome them and invite them to join the dance. Use this to show students how to write about the small but precious moments in their family lives.

10. Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee
This picture book is all about one ride on a roller coaster and all the emotions and excitement that it delivers. Use this to teach small-moment writing and text/writing features that students love to emulate—using dashes to stretch out words, using CAPITAL letters to place emphasis on words, and using sound words.

11. Abuelita and I Make Flan by Adriana Hernández Bergstrom
Anita is excited to help her grandmother make her birthday dessert—so excited that she breaks her grandmother’s special plate. Can she help enough to make up for it? Use this to show kids how to add flair to their narratives with speech bubbles, labels, and different types of text. Also use it to encourage kids to try to include the narrator’s internal monologue in their writing.

Use this to teach about experimenting with speech bubbles and different page layouts as a way to add interest and detail to narrative pieces.

15. Joy Ride by Sherri Duskey Rinker
Joy finds a beat-up bike and convinces her tinkering granddad to help her fix it up. But when her peers make fun of her new ride, she makes the impulsive decision to push the bike down a steep hill, and then must face the feelings that follow. Use this as a solid example of a more detailed personal narrative that includes dialogue, characters’ thoughts and feelings, and interesting language.

16. Powwow Day by Traci Sorell
It’s the day of the tribal powwow, but River is worried. She’s been sick and can’t join in as she usually does. The healing dance her friends and family perform inspires her to keep getting better. Use this to model the impact of using different sentence lengths. Intentional line-breaks and onomatopoeia make the text feel almost like poetry too.

17. Love Birds by Jane Yolen
Jon doesn’t have any friends yet in his new town, but he keeps busy birding, his favorite pastime. A funny coincidence in the woods introduces him to his first new friend, a fellow birder. The author wrote this as a companion to the classic Owl Moon, one of our longtime favorite mentor texts for narrative writing. Use it to model how to include details about sounds and setting.

18. Soul Food Sunday by Winsome Bingham
Every Sunday the whole extended family gathers at Granny’s for a big meal. Today, Granny invites her grandson to help prepare the family’s favorite dishes for the first time. From grating the cheese to washing the grit from the greens, he learns about each crucial step. Use this to model how to break down an experience into small parts and describe them in more detail.

19. The Electric Slide and Kai by Kelly J. Baptist
As his family prepares to attend a big wedding, Kai desperately wants to impress his grandad with his dance moves so that he’ll give him a “dance nickname” like other members of the family. Use this to teach students to add their thoughts, goals, and emotions to their narrative writing, and to show, not tell, using dialogue and characters’ actions.

20. A Thousand White Butterflies by Jessica Betancourt-Perez and Karen Lynn Williams
Isabella recently immigrated to the United States from Colombia and is eager to start school and make friends, but an unexpected snow day changes her big plans. Use this to model writing precise sentences and to show how a character’s emotions change during a story. If you have bilingual students, this is also a nice one to show how to weave in words from another language.

21. Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco
There is a loud thunderstorm at Grandma’s old farmhouse. “This is Thunder Cake baking weather,” calls Grandma, as she and her granddaughter hurry to gather the ingredients around the farm. A real Thunder Cake must reach the oven before the storm arrives, and the closer it gets, the more determined they become. This is one of our favorite tried-and-true mentor texts for narrative writing to model interesting openings and setting a scene. Also use it to talk about words that sound like what they mean, strong verbs, punctuation, and including an “extra”—in this case, a recipe—at the end of the story.

22. Tight Times by Barbara Shook Hazen
A little boy wants a pet, but his family has no money. On the day his father loses his job, he finds a stray kitten. Use this for teaching about inferring and how to create a scene that lets readers decide what’s happening.

The relatives came in a rainbow-colored station wagon. Everyone hugged and hugged all over the house. They stayed all summer, gardening and playing music. When they finally had to leave, they were sad but knew they would be together again next summer. Use this to spark memories of students’ family visits and trips, which are always good inspiration for narrative writing.

24. Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon
A boy named Ralph has zero writing ideas. Nothing ever happens to him. His life is so boring. Sound familiar? Use this to teach about finding writing ideas.

25. My Dog Mouse by Eva Lindström
A girl walks her neighbor’s dog, Mouse. He has ears as thin as pancakes that flap like flags in the wind, and he eats meatballs in one bite. This is one of our favorite mentor texts for narrative writing for the younger grades. Use it to teach adding small, meaningful details and interesting comparisons to help readers imagine your story. It’s also a good example of a powerful lead and ending.

26. A Space for Me by Cathryn Falwell
An older brother gets tired of sharing his room with his annoying little bro, so he decides to build his own space in his yard. Both brothers learn from the experience and end up finding common ground together. Use this to teach about sticking close to a meaningful theme to write a focused narrative.

27. My Papi Has a Motorcycle by Isabel Quintero
A young girl tells the tale of a motorcycle ride around her neighborhood with her Papi. Use this to model ways to characterize an important person throughout a story. It’s also great for modeling how to use vibrant descriptions and for building energy across the arc of a narrative.

28. A Map Into the World by Kao Kalia Yang
A girl moves to a new house and welcomes twin baby brothers to her family. Next door, an elderly neighbor grieves the loss of his wife. Use this to show students how describing what each character does or says in a situation can help create a complete scene. Also explore strategies for conveying the passage of time.

29. Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away by Meg Medina
Two best friends spend a final day together before one of them moves away. This one is full of heart, with equal parts sadness and sweetness. Use this to teach … well, everything. Model strong leads and endings, how to use small details to create a mood, and how to do justice to a particularly emotional experience by telling it step by step.

30. Watercress by Andrea Wang
When a girl’s parents spot watercress growing on the roadside, they pull over to pick it so they can make a meal reminiscent of their native China. The girl hates the whole experience but ends up appreciating it more as she learns what it means to her family. Add this to your mentor texts for narrative writing for when you work on revising for tighter, more precise language. Imagine how this narrative might have started out and compare that to its sparse but incredibly powerful final text. Also, share the author’s note, in which she describes the experience that led to this book, to teach about how to choose meaningful narrative topics.

31. On the Trapline by David A. Robertson and Julie Flett
A boy visits his grandfather’s old trapline in the northern wilderness, which is steeped in memories. Besides being a beautiful example of personal narrative, this is a fascinating exploration of Cree tradition for kids. Use this to model how to include details and dialogue to explain things to readers and for planning an interesting structure for your narrative. (In this case, it’s a repeating line at the end of each section that explains a Cree word.) It’s also a nice example of how to weave memories of the past into a present-tense narrative.

Personal Narratives are a big standard in writing for all grade levels. Students learn to pick a small moment and write about their lives. Each year, students write personal narratives that build on skills learned in previous years.
There are many great personal narrative mentor texts, however, we need a variety of personal narrative mentor texts in order to relate to the lives of the children in our community. Here are 20 new and diverse personal narrative mentor texts to engage students, connect to their lives, and spark writing abilities.

- The Day You Begin
Woodson, Jaqueline. The Day You Begin. New York, NY. Nancy Paulsen Books.
The Day You Begin tells about overcoming fears and being true to yourself. Children from different backgrounds describe how they feel different. From spending the summer babysitting a sister, to new schools, to different lunches, this book shows that our differences connect us and make us better.
2. A Bike Like Sergios
Boelts, M. (2016). A Bike Like Sergio’s. Somerville, MA: Candlewick
Ruben’s birthday is approaching and he wants nothing more than a bike like his friend Sergio. On a trip to the grocery store he finds $100 and realizes that now is the chance to get that bike. He must decide which is more important – getting that bike or returning the money to the owner.
- Suggested Classroom Use – This is a great book to pair with A Dog Wearing Shoes (see below) by Ko. Both of these books deal with finding something and the dilemma of keeping the items or returning them. Use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast these two stories. This is a great connection to get kids thinking about writing their own small moment about finding something.
3. A Dog Wearing Shoes

A fabulous story about a girl who finds a lost dog. She wants so badly to keep the dog, but soon learns what it’s like to lose something that you love. A great story to connect with readers about getting and losing pets. (See #2 Suggested Classroom Use)
4. Crown
Barnes, Derrick (2017). Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut. Evanston, Illinois: Agate Bolden.
A trip to the barber shop. A young boy gets a new cut and describes the styles of the men around him. A great look at the confidence gained from getting a fresh cut.
5. Islandborn
Diaz, Junot. (2018). Islandborn. New York, NY. Dial.
Islandborn is another selection that has both an English and Spanish version. This story tells of Lola’s journey to learn about the country where she was born. Her teacher gives an assignment that challenges her to learn about a country that she barely remembers.
- Suggested Classroom Use: Use this book at the beginning of the school year. Have students create their own windows that show an important memory from their past. These windows can be a display all alone or used with the personal narratives they write.
6. Carmela Full of Wishes
De La Pena, Matt (2018). Carmela Full of Wishes. New York, NY. G. P. Putnam’s Sons.
It is Carmela’s birthday and she is finally old enough to join her older brother on his daily outings. She learns that dandelions are for wishes and before she can make her wish, she falls and the wish floats away. Her older brother shows her a way to still make a wish.
7. I Walk With Vanessa
Kerascoët. (2018). I Walk With Vanessa. Toronto, ON, Canada: Schwartz and Wade.
No words are needed to tell this story. I Walk With Vanessa is a story about a new girl who is bullied on the way home from school. Another girl sees this and soon asks Vanessa to walk to school with her. A great story about friendship.
- Suggested Classroom Use: This wordless book is a great story to use to model writing a personal narrative. The class or small group can use the pictures to write what happens at each stage of the story.
8. Saturdays
Oge, M. (2019). Saturdays. New York, NY: Little Brown Books for Young Readers.
Saturdays are full of fun, but this Saturday everything goes wrong. Sometimes we need a reminder that it’s not the things we do, but the time together that is the most important.
9. The Field
Paul, B. Illus. by Jacqueline Alcantara. (2018). The Field. New York, NY: North South Books.
Young friends join a pickup soccer game in the field. They play in the sun, they play in the rain. Nothing stops them but the calls of their mamas at the end of the day.
10. Our Aunt Gracie
Woodson, J. Illus. By Jon Muth. (2002). Our Gracie Aunt. New York, NY: Hyperion Books for Children.
Johnson and Beebee must go live with their Aunt Gracie for a while. Their mother disappeared for too long and social services came. They get to visit their mother, but realize that being with Aunt Gracie is the best thing for them right now.
11. Alma and How She Got Her Name
Martinez-Neal, J. (2018). Alma and How She Got Her Name. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.
Alma’s name is too long. She asks her father why her name is so long. Her father explains each part of her name. Alma learns to love each part of her name and all that she is.
- Suggested Classroom Use: Introduce students to the interview process. Then have them go home and ask family members or have them predict the story of how they got their name. This is a great story to connect and compare with Thunder Boy Jr (see book below).
12. Thunder Boy Jr.
Alexie, S. Illus. by Yuri Morales. (2016). Thunder Boy Jr. New York: NY, Little Brown and Company.
Thunder Boy Jr. just wants a name of his own. He loves his dad, but wants to be his own person, his own name. After exploring different possible names, his dad chooses the perfect new name for Thunder Boy, Jr. (See Suggested Classroom Use above)
13. Looking Like Me
Myers, W. Illus. by Christopher Myers. (2009). Looking Like Me. New York, NY: Egmont.
A poem to describe all that you are and can be. Walter Dean Myers takes a look inward and outward to see all of the things he is – son, writer, dancer.
- Suggested Classroom Use: This is a great book to use to get kids ideas started. They can start their own list of all the things they are. This list can be the starting point of ideas for writing a personal narrative.
14. Big Red Lollipop
Khan, R. Illus by Sophie Blackall. (2010). Big Red Lollipop. New York, NY:Viking.
Rubina is invited to a birthday. She is so excited, but her mother makes her take her little sister, Sana, along. Sana makes a fuss at the party and steals Rubina’s big, red lollipop. Later, Sana is invited to her first birthday party, but will she have to take the newest little sister along or will Rubina save her from the same experience.
Personal Narrative Picture Books with Videos:Bookflix by Scholastic is a great resource to use with students. They have access to many Weston Woods productions. You can get a school subscription and it is also available with many public libraries. Below are two favorite personal narratives to use on Bookflix.
15. Knuffle Bunny (Weston Woods Video)
This book has a Weston Woods video companion. This is a great story to connect with kids who have had special toys or blankets. The young girl in this story learns that finding friends is about connecting with others.
16. Blackout (Weston Woods Video)
Rocco, John. (2011). Blackout. New York, NY: Disney Hyperion
A family finds the joy in losing power and finding time to spend together. When the lights go out this family finds that their neighbors have taken to the streets. People have disconnected from technology and they enjoy time with each other.
Epic is another great resource to use in schools. Epic has access to many eBooks. This is a great option for whole group and guided reading groups. Students can access your Epic class using one-to-one devices. These can also be pulled up on the Promethean Board in the classroom to model your reading strategies.
Teachers and librarians can get access to a free account to use with students. Below are personal narrative books to use on Epic.
17. Dreamers
Morales, Yuyi. (2018). Dreamers. New York, NY. Holiday House.
Dreamers is an autobiographical picture book about the author’s journey to America. The characters find solace in the children’s section of the San Francisco library. Dreamers relates to other books the author enjoys reading. This would be a great connection to other literature. It is also another outstanding option where there is both an English and Spanish version.
18. Jabari Jumps
Cornwall, G. (2017). Jabari Jumps. Somerville, MA: Candlewick.
Jabari is finally ready to jump off the high dive for the first time. He is excited, but fear overtakes him and he begins to talk himself out of taking that big jump. Through a few tips from his father, he gains the confidence to overcome his fear and enjoy the surprise of not knowing what will come.

A simple book looking at the small things in a day and how so much depends on those simple things.
- Suggested Classroom Use: Use writing transformations to engage readers in getting ideas on paper. Read this article to learn more about transformations.
20. Lola at the Library
McQuinn, A. Illus. by Rosalind Beardshaw. (2006). Lola at the Library. Watertown, MA: Charlesbridge Books.
Lola loves Tuesdays. On Tuesday Lola and her mommy go to the library. Lola describes the things that happen at the library from checking out books, to tasting the foam from her mommy’s cappuccino.
- Suggested Classroom Use: Use this book to analyze the details found in a personal narrative. Create a list of the details from this book. Then have students go back to their personal narratives to see if there are specific details in their writing.
21. Teammates
Barber, T., Barber, R. & Burleigh, R. Illus. by Barry Root. (2006). Teammates. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster.
Tiki struggled with holding the football when he was tackled. Through the right practice with his teammates, he learns a better way to hold the football and become a star receiver.
Personal Narrative Mentor Texts Discussion:When spending money on collection development it is important to look at how it will benefit the majority of the community. Looking at the standards list at the end of this post, it is easy to see how updating the selection of personal narrative mentor texts will benefit everyone in an elementary school. I personally come from a middle class, white world. I can find myself in books and those stories make me feel as though I am not alone in my thoughts, actions and experiences in this world. I had models to use as I learned to write about my personal experiences. It is important that educators seek to find books that provide this support for all students. We must look beyond what we have always used and begin to start looking at what is new, current, and relevant to the lives of our students. (Standards that are met with this collection development are listed at the very end of this post).
To gather ideas on books to add to this collection development, I used a variety of selection tools. I began this search with my social media outlets. I have bookmarked Instagram posts, and saved Facebook posts. In addition, I used my Pinterest boards and searched for new ideas on this outlet as well. Once I compiled a list of books that I felt met the needs of my community, I went to the Children’s Core Collection database. From here, I was able to read reviews and evaluate the resource for quality and fit for the collection. I have found that reviews for Kirkus, Hornbook, and School Library Journal match the best for my needs and have yet to lead me astray in adding books to our collection. I like the reviews that give a “verdict.”
The biggest challenge was in making decisions that reached many in my community. I wanted to be sure that the stories would serve as both windows and mirrors for the students in the school. I wanted them to be ones where the kids were making connections to small moments in their lives. The books needed to be ones that could spark writing ideas for personal narratives.
