Old age - a sentence or a gift of life?

Why is being "old" nowadays considered indecent? Why is “falling out of the cage” at this age, when the behavior of an elderly person does not meet generally accepted norms, is generally recognized as a crime? Perhaps this is due to the peculiarities of the Russian mentality. If in the West the age of 60 is the age of an active, fruitful life, the time of travel, learning new things, then in Russia it is the age of old age, a poor existence, being on the sidelines of society. Unfortunately, our country, which is in 4th place in the list of the “oldest” countries (only Japan, Great Britain and the USA are ahead of us), is only in 65th place in the ranking of happy old people. Russians are afraid of getting old, because old age is synonymous with loneliness, poverty and helplessness.

Improving the quality of life, the development of science, technology, medicine have led to the fact that the proportion of people over 60 years of age is constantly increasing. According to UN forecasts, in some countries in 20 years, the elderly (60-74 years old), old (75-90 years old) and centenarians (over 90 years old) will make up about a third of the total adult population.

“Old age is not joy” – this is how older people say, sadly remembering their young years. Of course, it is normal that no one wants to lose their youth. However, people often go to extremes, struggling with a phenomenon that cannot be prevented. In the history of mankind there are references to unusual, wild and even terrible methods of rejuvenation: baths with milk, blood, masks from animal dung, bird droppings and human feces, eating human flesh.

Nowadays, with the development of pharmacology, cosmetology and plastic surgery, science says: human aging can be slowed down. But even now, beauty is put in the first place, pushing health into the background. Facelift, breast augmentation, leg lengthening, removal of ribs, and other plastic surgery do not always bring the result in the form of the desired beauty and very often have a detrimental effect on health. But still, people continue to carry out interventions that are sometimes incompatible with a healthy body. And the excessive passion for plastic surgery in the modern world leads to a loss of beauty rather than to its acquisition.

Whether a person feels old or does not feel his age depends on the psychology of a particular person. One believes that old age is a sentence because he thinks: “It’s too late to change something in life, everything has already passed and passed.” Another understands his age as a chance because he believes: “Before it's too late, a lot can still be changed. Not all, but a lot." And this is regarded by them as a gift of life. Understanding that old age is not the end, but just a transition to a higher level. Although youth is gone, but the attractiveness remains. And this is not about appearance. Charismatic people who easily go through life, even with deep wrinkles, will always be surrounded by attention. At the same time, they will look much younger, fresher and more cheerful than their peers.

Indeed, the point is not in old age itself, but in the attitude towards it. If you perceive it as a chance, then it will no longer be so frightening. In this respect, believers are the ones who benefit the most. After all, they do not consider death the end of existence, and, therefore, old age, as the inevitable approach of this end. For them, death is just a transition to a new and more important life, so you need to mentally prepare for it and try to find pluses at this age.

In the old days, when there was no such a huge flow of information (Internet, television and radio, libraries), old people, wiser by life experience, were a source of knowledge and skills on a variety of issues. They willingly shared this knowledge, wisdom, life experience, as they saw their destiny in this. Many nations still maintain traditions of respect for the older generation. Being old was not considered shameful. Old age was respected.

Today, the important question is how to accept old age and at the same time not succumb to depression, not experience stress, maintain clarity of thought, memory and physical fitness. What are people most afraid of in old age? Many believe that death, but it is not. First of all, at a later age, people are most afraid of loneliness. Secondly, to be unnecessary, useless when you are denied employment. The lack of love is also frightening during aging, especially among people who have lost their soul mate and have lost warmth, care and tenderness. Older people begin to live by the stereotypes imposed on them. They don’t dress up and don’t go out into society - because if you’re old, then you’ve lived your life, stop walking around, it’s time to rest.

There is only one way out of this situation: make yourself active and healthy! First of all, you need to reevaluate your life and understand that it does not end with retirement. Of course, health has not increased, new difficulties have appeared, but new opportunities also appear. First of all, a lot of free time has appeared and it should be used to gain new knowledge (courses that I dreamed of taking all my life), visiting the sports ground, walking or jogging in the morning, you can also go to the fitness room. But first of all, you should get rid of the stereotypes of senile life: be natural and not be ashamed of your age, wear fashionable and comfortable clothes, do hair and makeup, be sure to find time for yourself, expand your social circle to the maximum (from a bench at the entrance to the Internet dating). Only the person himself creates a personal image and mood. So let him be positive, active, cheerful, cheerful and healthy. And if you perceive everything through the prism of skepticism and discontent, then at the age of 20 you can look and feel like a pensioner.

don't take sides in the team, but learn to listen to the young

The hero of Robert De Niro fit into the new team.

Still from the film "The Intern", Warner Bros. Pictures, 2015 / Still from the film "The Intern", Warner Bros. Pictures, 2015

Lucia Suleimanova, author of the best-selling book on developmental psychology "Everything is Possible. The Age of Inspiration" and the age management course "The Age of Opportunities" told Metro about how a person of age should feel as comfortable as possible surrounded by young colleagues.

Are there any occupations in which older people find it more difficult to adapt?

The expert is sure that it is. Some people have it harder.

– The professional environment is very important in this case. Let's say it's easier for a doctor: age gives him experience and career advantages. But if we are talking about work that requires activity (say, in sales), everything is much worse: this requires a certain speed, mobility and constantly updated skills, the expert says. – From here, in many respects, there are the main problems that an age employee faces: the difficulty of quickly mastering new knowledge and competencies, an increased level of fatigue and fatigue, and technical backwardness. And of course, communication difficulties.

Who is to blame for the problem?

Of course, the employee himself is partly to blame for the fact that a conflict arises. The point here is in his mistakes and characteristic features that impede normal working communication. For example, fear of the new, psychological unpreparedness for adaptation, fear of not coping with the situation, insufficient knowledge. However, age is not a sentence at all.

“All this can be dealt with,” says Lucia. – Especially if you take full advantage of the benefits that the experience of age gives: stress resistance, developed mechanisms for various reactions and victories, experienced difficulties, the ability to adapt in difficult situations and rely on one’s own strength, loyalty to the leadership. Actually, the main problems that you have to work with are the fear of technology and some age-related discomfort from the fact that you have to give in to the young.

Is the team to blame?

- Some of the problems, however, are still on the conscience of the young team. This story is known from the tale of Mowgli - remember "Akela missed"? Representatives of new generations have different values, their own advantages and disadvantages. Yes, they advocate for the environment and are easily integrated into the network (both in the meaning of "Internet" and in the meaning of "networking"), but at the same time they are weakly stress-resistant, rather arrogant and tend to look with some mockery at a person who talks about the importance of relying on own strengths. By the way, representatives of these generations often interact with state organizations much worse than older people.

What is the right thing to do? Participate in meetings more actively . If you need feel free to talk to HR. Enter the team neatly and slowly, observing and looking closely, even writing down: who is what, what he does, what he loves. Determine the most attractive representative of the young camp for you, arrange him for yourself and use him as a "translator" and "parliamentarian". Take a neutral position , tune in to positive, build relationships with management, demonstrate your qualities and constantly think about what you can become an indispensable member of the team.

What to do in this situation?

Of course, a person of age has a way out, says the psychologist.

- First, he needs to foresee a number of problems in advance and try to spread the straw - to prepare and compensate for the technical gap as much as possible, - advises the expert. - Secondly, to fix on the positive aspects of the younger generation - what you can learn from them. Thirdly, consider how you can be useful to them. Adults usually fit in well with a younger team through informal relationships, support, and positive help. Actually, the film "The Intern" with Robert De Niro in the title role brilliantly tells about this - the hero's environment lacked support and stability, delicate help in adapting to life's difficulties.

But what to do if the confrontation is still obvious and the young team does not accept, or even tries to squeeze out an older employee? The first recommendation is not even to him, but to his leadership, the expert says. Smart leaders, in order to avoid this, arrange regular meetings of employees, joint discussions, exchange of different points of view, corporate parties for informal contact, and all this just helps to gradually build the right working relationship.

- In general, if an older employee feels like a lonely black sheep, the question is his professional competence and relationship with management.
