Why is teaching shapes important?

Basic shapes for kids are being taught at every preschool today. It is important to understand the necessity of shaping activities for kindergarten kids. Few ways in which kids are impacted by basic shapes are:

  1. Visual Information
  2. Sign and symbols
  3. Alphabets and numbers
  4. Mathematical concepts
  5. Categorization and comparison
  6. Problem-solving
  7. Symmetry

  1. Kids Learn how to organize visual information

Children observe their surroundings very keenly and encounter different shapes every single day. Teaching basic shapes for kids helps them understand their own observations. The visual information they gather comprises compound shapes that are formed by a combination of basic shapes. Shapes’ names for kids enable them to identify the basic shapes in compound shapes. For instance, when a child looks at a car it appears to be a rectangular box. However, children will learn to identify the compound shapes in a car once they learn basic shapes.

  1. Helps to teach signs and symbols

Symbols are very important for kids. But it will take some time for kids to get used to it. Kids take some time before they can actually name the shapes they see. However, this does not indicate that the kid is unable to comprehend basic shapes. Signs on the other hand impart certain information and details. Basic shapes for kids help them store information in their minds. Kids are usually 5 to 6 years old when they start following signs and symbols

.

  1. Help kids identify different alphabets and numbers

Toddlers may get confused among all the alphabets they see. As parents, it can be challenging to teach various letters and numbers. Kids tend to mix up similar-shaped letters like “b” and “d”. Patience is important while correcting these mistakes. Learning shapes for kids help them differentiate among the letters. Therefore all the preschools cover learning shapes for kids before moving into Alphabets and numbers.

  1. Basic mathematical concepts can be taught

Once a child is comfortable identifying shapes for his /her own, they can start learning simple mathematical operations like addition and subtraction. It is always easier to teach addition than subtraction. Therefore we advise parents to start teaching addition and then venture into subtraction. Basic shapes for kids include balls, matchboxes, dice, etc. So you can pick the object of your choice and start teaching simple maths to your kids.

  1. Categorization and comparison

Facial recognition and navigation skills are swiftly developed among kids who can categorize and compare various shapes. As kids learn to differentiate shapes, they understand facial features and their differences. It is also important to note that different shapes for kids imply different geographical locations or features. Have you noticed, in kids’ drawing- mountains and hills are always triangles and houses have a square or rectangle structure with a triangular roof? We do suggest you take a look and understand how kids observe and compare the shapes around them.

  1. Problem-solving

Brain development and thinking skills are really important for a kid in preschool or kindergarten. Shapes and colors are directly responsible for brain development. Kids analyze structures and start with 2-D mental mapping and then gradually, as the year progresses, they start 3-D mapping. These mental mapping of shapes plays a crucial role in the development of problem-solving abilities in children.

  1. Symmetry

Kids love to play around the parks or fields. This is important for the development of their motor skills. However, kids tend to lose their balance more often than adults. Growing up, we all had cuts and bruises on our knees Over the years these injuries started disappearing even when sports activities became more rigorous. This happens when kids are unable to understand the basic concept of balance and center of gravity. Now even though terms like the center of gravity feel fancy for kids, it is important to teach symmetry with the help of basic shapes for kids. This will help them understand how to position themselves and develop motor skills.

What are the different types of shapes for kids?

  1. Basic Shapes for kids

Shapes like squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles are taught first to kids. Once a child learns how to categorize and name these shapes, they are taught more complex shapes. However, it suggested that ample time is spent on basic shapes for kids. This is because all the shapes are taught at a later stage depending upon the concepts developed during learning basic shapes for kids. It may require a little while for kids to pick up the concept but we suggest parents be patient.

  1. Advanced Shapes for kids

Once a child is familiar with basic shapes he/she is ready to learn advanced shapes for kids. These shapes include arrows, stars, and hearts. Advanced shapes do not include 3-D structures in preschool as it may confuse them. Kids with a clear conception of basic shapes will be able to ace this topic quickly.

How to teach shapes to kids with the help of games and activities?

Till now, we saw how important basic shapes can be for a child's brain development. Teaching shapes can be cumbersome without activities as children find it difficult to comprehend something that can not be observed. Activities and games will help kids learn while having fun.

Now, we will look into a few activities and games to help your child play and learn.

  1. Flashcard shapes for kids

Flashcards are a really fun and interactive tool while teaching kids. They can be purchased in stores or prepared by hand. You can draw different shapes on cards made out of thick paper to prepare a set of flashcards. Use these cards to play with your child. Ask your kid to pick up a card and name the shape drawn on the card. Maintain a scoreboard and let them beat their own high scores.

  1. Shapes for kids chart

Bright and colorful shape names for kid's charts are available in the market. To prepare them at home, you need to draw shapes and write down their names. Colorful shapes are easier to remember for kids. Ask your kids to look at the beautiful chart every day in the morning before going to preschool or kindergarten.

  1. Shapes hunt

Just like a treasure hunt, shapes hunting is fun and easy for preschoolers. Use a set of flashcards with different shapes on them. Ask your kid to pick up one card and identify the shape and once he or she has identified the shape, ask them to find an object of the same shape around the house. This will keep the kids engaged and help them relate basic shapes to their surroundings.

  1. Puzzle games

Two types of puzzles are available for kids to learn basic shapes. The first one contains pieces of brightly colored basic shapes for kids. These shapes need to be fitted onboard with hollows similar to the shapes. These boards with pieces of basic shape for kids are available in preschool supply shops and toy shops.

The second type is a conventional puzzle with bigger pieces. Once a child is proficient in basic shapes for kids they can try to join the pieces of a picture together.

We suggest you go for basic puzzles with pictures of fruits and flowers to keep the level easy for your child.

Conclusion

In the former section, we came across the various benefits of teaching basic shapes for kids. It is one of the most important topics covered in the kindergarten and preschool syllabus. Even though your child may be learning shapes for kids in school, it is suggested that parents help them out with shapes games for kids. This is because the identification of shapes and naming shapes are two different objectives. Kids tend to forget shape names.

Start teaching basic shapes to your child and try to relate them with the objects around you. This will help kids relate the concept of basic shapes with their surroundings. We suggest parents start with basic shapes and gradually move into advanced shapes. Spend more time on basic shapes for kids to build the foundation for advanced shapes.

18 Kindergarten Videos to Teach 2D Shapes – KindergartenWorks

Here are some favorite kindergarten videos on describing and naming 2D shapes. These videos are quick and very handy to use in lessons or during a transition.

For example, you just might need a learning video to supplement what you’re teaching or a brain break video that can help get the wiggles out.

Let's look at my favorite videos that teach how to describe multiple shapes, some brain break videos that get kids moving while they learn, a couple of videos so students can guess the shape names, and lastly, some individual shape videos.

Most kindergarten standards today require students to know a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon - so these will be the main shapes featured in this collection.

Describing 2D shape videos

Here are teacher-recommended videos for teaching how to describe these 2D shapes.

Here are the shapes that I know

Here are the 2D Shapes that I know by Harry Kindergarten has a catchy tune and helps visualize these shapes in our world.

This covers circles, triangles, squares, hexagons, and rectangles. You may not have to go any further on this list to have a class favorite!

Marmot's shapes

This one quickly became my second favorite since Marmot’s shapes is very catchy and explicitly lays out the descriptions of the sides.

This video covers rectangles, triangles, circles, and squares.

I'm a shape

This shapes song is simple, and makes its point, which is exactly what we need it to do!

Each shape introduces itself and its features. It covers squares, circles, and triangles.

Shapes in the world

The shapes song helps begin to work on describing these shapes and shows basic pictures from our world that includes shapes.

It’s a little slower-moving, but still effective!

This video shows circles, triangles, squares in detail, and just mentions rectangles, ovals, diamonds, and stars.

Leapfrog shapes

And this video was shared with me by email reader Kristen. {thanks Kristen!} She liked that it covered circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles all in under 4 minutes.

Shape rap

Create circles and squares with your bodies. This shape rap song will get your kids moving and shows some good examples of shapes in the world.

The farmer in the dell

This shapes song isn't my favorite - but I could totally see using the quick chants (that are sung to the tune of The Farm in the Dell) to learn how to draw the shapes with kinders.

This song includes circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.

Brain breaks - get up and move

These shape videos are designed for students to move while watching, making them the perfect brain breaks.

Shape up!

This classic shape song will get kids moving, drawing shapes in the air, and learning some features of the shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and oval.

Go on a shape hunt

Students go on a secret mission to look around the room in this guided 3-minute video to find something shaped like a circle, rectangle, square, triangle, diamond, and oval.

Guess the shape videos

These videos are meant to engage students by guessing and naming the shapes.

Changing shape

This one will keep your kids guessing as the shape keeps changing.

It can also lead to a great discussion about how the sides change and what happened to make it each new shape.

This video shows a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, and an octagon.

Do you know what shape I am?

I like the simplicity but effectiveness of this shape song for kindergarten that covers a circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.

Name that shape

This name that shape video is just as it sounds. It flashes shapes and students call out the name of the shape before the name is shown (or called out by the teacher).

It shows triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, ovals, rhombus and hexagons.

Name the shape game

Students call out the shape names (circle, rhombus, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, hexagon) two or three times during this guided 4-minute video.

I like that the third round of the "game" includes real-world images and that the fourth round is a combination of plain shapes and real-world images with no answer given aloud.

Individual shapes

Here are some individual shape videos that just cover one shape each.

Hexagon

Most videos that feature multiple shapes don't often include a hexagon so these bonus videos are good to include.

This hexagon shape video is pretty quick and reinforces that they have 6 sides. Your kiddos will enjoy doing the dino dance.

Work on learning what a hexagon has in under two minutes - this video uses the words "sides" and "angles" to describe the features of a hexagon.

Triangles

The story bots (which are fast-moving and upbeat) show a bird's beak, rocket ship, and more in this triangle song video.

Rectangles

The whole world is full of rectangles! Your kinders will have fun trying to keep up with this insanely fast-paced rectangle shape video.

Circles

The more I watch the story bots, the more I love them.

A donut, a ferris wheel, a trash can lid are all examples used in this circle shape song. I love that they only include flat examples of circles (no spheres) as compared to some other videos.

Squares

Serve some saltines when you show this square shapes video. Squares are everywhere!

So, if you're working on shapes like us, I hope your students will love these videos too.

Kindergarten naming

In order to interest potential customers, a kindergarten must have a bright and attractive name. The name of the institution should please both parents and children, evoke positive emotions and trust in them.

"Naming" will help with this. Naming is the process of developing a unique and memorable name for a brand, product or service. The name and logo create the first impression of the company, and it is difficult to change it later. In naming, there are several important criteria with which you can come up with the most appropriate name for the future garden:

  • Associative names;
  • Names using phrases;
  • Short titles.

Associativity

Kindergartens most often evoke pleasant and warm memories in people's memory. For children, the associations evoked by the garden are very important. They are the key to returning customers. Indeed, in a place where the child felt good, he will want to return again and again. We can safely say that if the meaning of the name attracts a new client, then the associativity returns him.

It is a well-known fact that people absorb information more easily and quickly when presented in a short or concise format. Therefore, most entrepreneurs give their preference to short names of kindergartens. This helps clients to better perceive and remember these names, and also such naming increases the chances of returning old and attracting new children with their parents.

To conclusions

Summing up, it is worth saying that, in addition to the principles of naming, it is worth looking into the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which tells about the use of some variants of business names. If you use them, you may be denied registration, and in the worst case, if no one notices and nevertheless such a name is registered, then the relevant authorities will impose a fine.

By choosing the right name for the kindergarten, you will be able to secure a large flow of new customers. A good name can serve as a good advertisement for your business, attracting parents and their children.

The name of an elite kindergarten. Name of kindergarten and groups

This article was created, rather, as a way to help come up with the name of a kindergarten or group in kindergarten. We've narrowed down our title search to a few categories.

The names of kindergartens can be divided into several subtypes.

Fabulous. Funny positive characters and elements of fairy tales are taken for the title. Everyone knows examples of such names for kindergartens: Pinocchio, Cheburashka, Kolobok, Nafanya, Golden Key, Geese-Swans, Luntik, Bambi.

Natural. Diminutive forms of objects of animate and inanimate nature are used as names. For example: “Sun”, “Christmas tree”, “Squirrel”, “Stork”, “Spring”, “Starling”, “Anthill”, “Glade”, “Firefly”, “Chamomile”.

Place principle. What kind of principle is this, it is easy to understand. It is enough to walk around the seaside town, and you will collect a whole list of names of kindergartens: "Sailor", "Jung", "Dolphin", "Ship".

This principle is not suitable for all locations. So, it is difficult to imagine the name of a kindergarten in a mining town.

Words applied to children. They can also be used for the name of both the kindergarten and its separate group. Kindergartens "Tomboy", "Fidget" and even "Heir" appear here (there is such a kindergarten in Moscow).

When you come up with a name for a kindergarten or kindergarten group, try to choose words that are general, non-committal, unless it was originally intended. For example, the name "Pinocchio" is just that. But the kindergarten "Harlequin" - already involuntarily requires compliance with the name. It immediately seems that the children there only do what they learn the roles and play performances.

We would not recommend taking a long polysyllabic name for the kindergarten. Beautiful - yes. Sweet - yes. Original - why not. But a rare preschooler is able to pronounce correctly "Our kindergarten is called" House under the Star of Bethlehem ".

In inventing the name of the group, you can take a little more liberties. We will not explain why, just give examples: "Guys", "27 Dwarfs", "Stargazers", "Turtles", "Mammoths", "Cat Dog", "Beauty and the Beasts".

Names and characters of modern cartoons can and should be used in group names. After all, the lifetime of the group is commensurate with the duration of the popularity of modern animated characters. Where are they up to Cheburashka, which gave its name to thousands of kindergartens and groups across the country.

That's about it. Creativity in your head, and children - health!
Chants, mottos, slogans, names.

What is the name of the kindergarten? The question is quite complicated, but very interesting, because, choosing the right and accurate name, it’s as if you are sending you back to the world of childhood, where a lot of fascinating and mysterious things await you. It is worth noting that the name of the kindergarten is not just a word. It should be magical and magical, because kids should be drawn to it, happily go to this place and discover something new and unknown every day. The name should be associated with something joyful and cheerful, be a source of positive emotions and good mood.

What should be done to choose an interesting and original name for a garden?

  • Firstly, the name must necessarily meet such requirements and parameters as softness in sound, tenderness and warmth, but at the same time be quite original and unusual. For example, the Sun, Little Mouse, Bell, Bunnies, Robin, Cheburashka, Droplet.
  • Secondly, a captivating and tempting phrase is perfect for the name, which will definitely remind you of childhood, as well as the cohesion of the whole team. The following titles are notable examples. This is a small country, a friendly family, a flower town, swan geese.
  • Thirdly, when choosing a name, focus on the individual characteristics of the kindergarten itself. For example. If your garden focuses on familiarizing students with foreign languages, which is very fashionable and popular at the present time, then the garden can be called "Linguist". It is worth noting that already from the name itself it becomes clear what this place is and its main tasks. In the event that, nevertheless, the bias does towards rallying children and parents, which is determined by the large participation of joint competitions and works, then the most correct and optimal name will be “Friendly Family”.
  • Fourthly, analyze all the fairy tales and children's cartoons and opt for some interesting and fascinating name that would become the pride and highlight of the garden. One of the most popular and fashionable names today is Smeshariki, believe me, children and parents really like it.
  • Fifthly, when choosing a name, you can involve adults from the parent committee in this process and invite them to play such an exciting and interesting game as "Association", which will help you make the right and accurate choice. Remember that if the name reminds you of rather unpleasant and negative associations, then, of course, you should turn away from it. Even though it is very beautiful and attractive. But if the associations are only positive, then this is exactly what you were looking for. For example, if you take such a garden name as “Dolphin”, at first glance it is very beautiful and successful, but it will definitely be associated with a pool, and many parents will mistakenly believe that it exists. It is precisely from such incorrect associations that it is better to get rid of and not use them in the title.

If you find it difficult to choose a name for the kindergarten, then you can go for an easier and more accessible way. This is to analyze the existing names that are in great demand and popularity, and then, based on them, make a choice or come up with something of your own.

Popular names of kindergartens.

    1. Little Raccoon.
    2. Three Bears.
    3. Thumbelina.
    4. The Little Prince.
    5. Classics.
    6. Funtik.
    7. Chamomile.
    8. Znayka.

Today, the range of names for kindergarten is very wide and varied, so there is plenty to choose from. Remember that choosing a name is a personal matter for everyone, but all wishes should be taken into account and all standards and requirements should be met. Do not forget that the name you choose, first of all, should please the child, because everything is done for them and for them.

1 Taka-Tuka-Land, Berlin, Germany
In Berlin's Taka-Tuka-Land Kindergarten, the architects decided to emphasize that children are very mobile creatures. They strive to run back and forth at breakneck speeds, and this is fraught with serious injuries. Therefore, in Taka-Tuka-Land it is difficult to find hard surfaces (except the floor) and sharp corners. Well, it is named after the ideal country for children Taka-Tuka from the fairy tale about Pippi Longstocking.

The exterior and interior of this preschool are done in bright lime-yellow colors, and the entrance is designed in the form of a giant hut made of wooden slats. Inside the building there are even more such huts, only made of soft fabric and a trampoline. They are built along the walls, and also decorate some of the windows from the inside. The designs of the Swedish walls are also funny: these are not the wooden beams we are used to, fixed to the walls, but entire towns of ladders, arches and swings. The corridor of the kindergarten has been turned into a small exhibition space in which children's drawings, photographs, and crafts are exhibited. The stands are also painted light yellow and illuminated with lamps.

Ecole Maternelle Pajol, a 4-room kindergarten located on rue Pajol in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, combines many things that are so loved and desired in childhood. Each step and turn reveals another facet of an amazing, bright, colorful world that never becomes dull and boring.

Here's what its creators have to say:
"We love color, especially when it's used to brighten and brighten a gray and dull environment. And this kindergarten definitely speaks the language of joyful colors.
We love it when public art, public buildings and spaces are used for play, expression of joy, and not just for displaying pompous "acceptable" art and architecture. And shouldn't a kindergarten correspond to the mood of children, not adults?"

3 Kekec Kindergarten by Jure Kotnik Architecture. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Kekec Kindergarten is located in one of the residential areas of Ljubljana. Its appearance was due to the growing need for new kindergartens, as the population of the capital has increased significantly, and the building density inside the city's ring road has also increased. The idea of such a design arose due to the lack of equipment for children's playgrounds in existing kindergartens. The new façade solves this problem because it is itself a game element.
On one side, the boards covering the glazed facade are painted in one of nine bright colors, and on the other side, the wood is left unpainted.

This solution has several functional purposes: it serves as a shadow element and also as an educational game for children. While playing with these shutters, children recognize different colors and constantly change the look of their kindergarten.

6 Kindergarten in Tromso, Norway

As a result of a competition for the creation of a new pre-school institution, announced by the local authorities, two new kindergartens have appeared in the city of Tromso, Norway. The architects were given complete freedom in organizing the space, which allowed 70°N arkitektur as to create fun, colorful and, last but not least, interactive interiors.

7 Kindergarten in the Finnish town of Jutteri (Kolpino, Russia) + Kindergarten New-Ton (St. Petersburg, Russia)

In Russia, too, there are unusual and wonderful projects for children's homes. So the construction company Lenstroytrest, as part of the construction project for a new residential complex in Kolpino, which was called the Finnish Town of Yutteri, will build a dream kindergarten.
According to the company's specialists: "Going to the kindergarten is a pleasure! That's why we decided to design it in the form of a fairy-tale castle that can accommodate 120 little residents of Yutteri."

"Yutteri" complex is being built in the best traditions of residential complexes in Europe - when the beauty and severity of the appearance of the buildings are combined, the convenience and safety of the apartments inside. And one of the fundamental principles of the "Live" philosophy, according to which all the company's projects are developed, is social infrastructure. According to her, a fairy-tale castle is being built in the middle of a Finnish town, and a large and cozy school with a swimming pool and a sports ground is being built next to it.

It is noteworthy that the fabulous palace in Yutteri is not the only project of Lenstroytrest in our area. So in 2016, in the New Ton residential complex, which is being built near Ladozhskaya metro station, another unusual kindergarten with a musical and aesthetic bias will be built.
When designing the kindergarten, the builders sought to create a place where children would be happy to come every day, so they focused on bright architecture. The new kindergarten at New Ton is an elliptical building with multi-coloured walls, the façade of which will be adorned with a large decorative treble clef. The kindergarten will please the eye even in the dark, thanks to the artistic illumination of the facade.

“Our main task is not just to build a kindergarten, but to create all the conditions to provide the little residents of Newton with a quality education. As a parent, I understand how important it is to be confident in the institution where you send your child: what is the emphasis in the curriculum, how seriously the management takes the choice of the development course, whether there are additional educational opportunities, what is the logistics and medical and social support kindergarten.
