Jenga - Game Expert

Jenga, Tower, Leaning Tower - this game has many versions and even names, but almost everyone knows what kind of game it is. Jenga and its varieties are incredibly popular social table entertainment. What is the popularity of this game and how to play it at all?

It's interesting : the word "jenga" is translated from Swahili as "to build".

Jenga rules of the game

The rules of the game are incredibly simple. A tower of wooden blocks is placed in the center of the table. You need to stack the blocks on top of each other three pieces in a row, and each next row is laid out perpendicular to the previous one, until a tower 18 floors high grows on the table.

By the way, this is one of those rare games that can be played even with an incomplete set (if, for example, some of the bars were stolen by kids or dogs chewed). Just build a tower from the set that is available - this will not affect the gameplay! nine0005

The tower must be level and secure on the table. Use the game box or any flat object to level the building and check that none of the blocks stick out of the tower. Gather around the table and you can start playing!

Players take turns carefully removing one block from the tower to place it on top.

By the way, in Jenga there is no limit on the number of players - you can play with any squad, even a very large company, as long as everyone has enough space and time to make at least a couple of moves. nine0005

Players take turns and take two actions on their turn. First, the active player must pull one block from the tower. You can select any row except the top one. You can try to lightly push the bar to check the strength of its position, or try to pull it out right away. The main thing is not to drop the tower! If the block is sitting firmly in place, try looking for another option, checking how hard or easy the element moves with light touches. You can do these actions with only one hand! This is one of the basic rules of Jenga - you can not hold the tower or its elements, all actions must be performed with one hand. nine0005

When the block is found and removed, the player proceeds to the second step - the block must be placed on the topmost row of the tower. In the basic rules of the game, you must follow the original masonry scheme, that is, lay out the bars three in a row. But if you want to complicate or speed up the game, the bars can be laid out as you like. Players can deliberately place blocks in such a way as to complicate the task of the next player as much as possible - up to placing blocks not horizontally, but vertically! However, before the start of the game, you can always agree on these nuances. nine0005

After the player has removed the block and re-placed it, the turn passes to the next player in a clockwise direction. The game continues until someone makes a fatal mistake and collapses the entire structure! This can happen in two cases: if the game has been going on for some time and quite a few blocks have been removed from the base of the tower. In this case, it will inevitably warp and become so unstable that any touch can cause a collapse. The second option - if you play by complicated rules and put blocks in the top row in a random order, then this can also cause the tower to collapse. After all, a bar unsuccessfully placed on top can put a lot of pressure on a shaky structure. nine0005

And here it is - the most exciting moment of the game! You are breathlessly trying to pull out another piece of wood from the bottom of the structure, the tower slowly wobbles from side to side, everyone froze around the table in anticipation of collapse ...? The bar slowly slips out of its groove, you catch your breath, wiping sweat with an adrenaline-shaking hand, and suddenly the whole tower begins to crawl, and then collapses with a roar, scattering all over the table! This incredibly intense moment is why everyone sits down to play Jenga and why so many people love it! nine0005 The moment the tower collapses!

The player who caused the building to collapse is considered the loser. You can collect the wreckage of the tower and, if desired, start a new round. There are no victory points in Jenga, but you can play rounds up to the agreed number of games or even until everyone gets bored. And the winner can be the player who brought down the tower the least number of times.

What strategies would you recommend for beginners?

First, calmness and patience. Such delicate work as interacting with a shaky structure requires calmness and does not like haste. Even on the player's turn in front of you, you can start looking at what blocks are moving under their hands. It may be that the player is trying to pull out one bar, and the second one is already ready to go from above. Remember it and try to get it on your turn. If this does not work out, proceed patiently and carefully. Gently feel the blocks, but do not press hard, but only lightly tap. If the piece of wood is not under pressure from above, it will easily begin to slip out at the slightest pressure. nine0005

Secondly, always try to remove the center blocks as they are often under less pressure than the side blocks. Plus, it’s better to get blocks from the central or upper parts of the tower - after all, the lower part is a support and is much more difficult to influence. Although if you want to complicate the move of the player following you, then in this case it just makes sense to pull out the block from the bottom of the tower in order to weaken its stability. However, such a decision can lead to difficulties on your own, so be careful and do not take risks in vain. nine0005 Wooden blocks from the game Jenga Wooden blocks from the game Jenga.

Third, always try to keep balance in mind and use it to your advantage. In the second half of the game, when the tower has already lost its original shape and become more wobbly, it is very important to understand how to keep the balance. If the tower is skewed to one side, try to find a block that will return it to a more or less balanced position. If you have already pulled out a block and need to put it in the top row, and the tower is clearly falling to one side, place it in such a way as to balance its stability. At some point in the game, you will realize that it is more important not to annoy the next player, but to hold the tower right now. Therefore, the strategy of placing the bar in an uncomfortable position for the opponent may not always be successful if it brings more problems than good for you. Always check visually how the tower is still able to maintain stability before your move and make decisions based on this. nine0005

How can the gameplay be upgraded?

Before building the tower, you can write questions on the bars with a pencil or even a felt-tip pen. When pulling out the bar, the player must additionally answer the question or complete the task. Questions can be both an intellectual quiz, and funny, and even romantic. You can also come up with absolutely any tasks - how to exchange things, and something to eat or drink. Think in advance what questions, tasks or other instructions can be composed for the future company. If you write questions with a pencil or stick small stickers on the bars, you can change the quiz for each company. nine0005

To make the game more difficult, you can write numbers from 1 to 6 on all the bars. Then each player rolls a d6 die on his turn and chooses to draw one of those bars whose number fell on the die. This option will complicate and greatly speed up the game, because the number of such bars may fall out, which will be very difficult or even impossible to pull out.

Where and with whom can you play Jenga?

Jenga is so fun and easy to play that it's suitable for almost any company. It can be played with family and children, with friends and guests, even with colleagues and older relatives. Jenga captures the attention and interest of everyone around with equal success. nine0005

You can take the box with the game (fortunately, it is not big at all) to visit or to a party. Even if there are more applicants than the recommended number of players indicated on the box, it does not hurt to include everyone in the game to make one or two moves.

You can also play this game at home with your child. The gameplay of Jenga perfectly develops fine motor skills and manual dexterity in children. The rules are easy to explain even to preschoolers, and with kids you can use the game like blocks.

And Splash!, a smaller version of the well-known Jenga, you can even take with you to work, because the gameplay is so quiet that it will not attract the attention of strangers. Being distracted for 5-10 minutes during a lunch break with such non-standard entertainment for office life can be very cool.

Build your own small but proud tower by playing Splash! Various elements of the Splash game! will make you break your head.

Even in solitude, Jenga can be useful as a way to meditate or improve gaming skills. The thoughtful construction of the turret will distract you from worries and give you a few minutes of pleasant leisure. nine0005

What versions of the game are available in our stores?

The assortment of the Igroved store at one time included a wide variety of versions of this game. At the moment, we have selected and left in stores only the best and highest quality Jenga options.

Classic Jenga from Hasbro, very high quality, with a base of three rectangular bars. The bars are plain, made of light woods, very well polished.

Tower from Bambi publishing house with rectangular bars made of beech wood. In this version, the tower is removed from the box from the top, which may seem more convenient. nine0005

Leaning Tower from Professor Puzzle. The game features a vintage box design and rectangular bars made of dark and light woods.

Tactic turret with square bars. At the base of the tower, according to the rules of this version, not three, but four bars are laid out, which gives the tower additional stability, and the game - duration.

Splash! from the publishing house Style of Life - another version of the falling tower with colored figures of various shapes that you need to slip on the opponent so that the tower collapses on his move. This is a compact and very fun game, in addition, it is also educational. Young children can learn colors and shapes through the game, older children can develop memory by memorizing combinations of figures. And for adults there are tricky, but very interesting game options. nine0005
