Using the example of the parable of the prodigal son, the Lord revealed to us the secret of God's infinite love for His creation, the all-forgiving love of parents for children, and the love of each of us for our neighbor.

ABC IN PICTURES. NIKOLAY CHEREPNIN

Cherepnin

14 sketches for the Russian “ABC in Pictures” by A. Benois (op. 38) – a piano cycle by the composer N. Cherepnin, inspired by the illustrations of the artist A. Benois. In 1904, for his 2-year-old son A. Benois, he created the theatrically colorful “ABC in Pictures” filled with bright artistic details, which made a huge contribution to the development of the art of illustration.

In 1910, Benoit Tcherepnin, who knew the work well, turned to the ABC in Pictures, which was especially loved and popular among children at the beginning of the century. In the bright and imaginative music of Tcherepnin, the characters invented by the artist come to life: Arap, Baba Yaga, Khan and the Queen, a little girl and mischievous boys, a loving mother and a kind nanny. Each sketch is preceded by a small epigraph, in which the composer briefly conveys the plot of Benois' picture: "an evil witch lures children into her gingerbread house", "a girl spoon-feeds her favorite doll", "a cozy white house among greenery, children frolicking on the lawn". Musically illustrating the scenes from the life of children, captured in the "ABC", Cherepnin sensitively reproduces the creative concept of Benois, not a single detail invented by the artist escapes the composer's gaze. At the same time, the composer's creative reading often enriches the plot of the picture with new associations, invites the listener to give free rein to his imagination and imagine himself as one of the heroes of this "alphabetic" story.

Sounds of fanfares are heard and to the gallant march soldiers proudly march under the leadership of their young "general" ("General") ; the cradle in the nursery is gently rocking, the simple song of the nanny is heard, in this calm atmosphere created by the measured murmuring ostinato motifs in the accompaniment, lullaby intonations and monotonously repeating melodic phrases, the composer introduces colorful and characteristic musical episodes that personify the dreams and fantasies of children, inspired by the tales of the old nanny (bye bye) . In the sketch “Scarecrow” (“In the fur shop, the children were afraid of a stuffed bear. The mother calms them down”) , three diverse episodes are clearly audible: in the first episode, the theme in a low register draws the image of a stuffed bear that frightened the children, the second, consisting of excited fast passages, conveys the fright and fear of the little characters in the picture, and the third, an affectionate waltz-like episode, shows how a kind mother comforts his children.
In his sketches, Tcherepnin continues the tradition of translating fairy tales into music, which was clearly manifested in Russian art thanks to the works of Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Lyadov. At the same time, using new musical and visual techniques characteristic of modern art, Cherepnin masterfully embodies the magical and fantastic images of the ABC in sounds ("Forest", "Sweets", "Baba Yaga"). Cherepnin's musical landscapes reign supreme in musical landscapes. (The Dacha, The Forest, Egypt, The Lake, The Stars).
The theme of childhood also appeared in the vocal works of N. Cherepnin: in 1907-12. the composer composes children's songs based on poems from K. Balmont's cycle "Fairy Tales", dedicated by the poet to his little daughter.
