Goldilocks and the Three Bears Books (Traditional Picks)

Enjoy reading the traditional tale by different illustrators with slight differences to setting or characters in these stories.

Jan Brett is a masterful illustrator so her version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears will give the children lots to look at while reading aloud.

Another illustrator that I adore is Valeri Gorbachev and his version of Goldilocks and the Three Bearsis beautiful.

Looking for a classic version of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears check out the version by Paul Galdone.

And, James Marshall version is also a classic version.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Candice Ransom is a good pick for your youngest listeners.

Another version for young listeners is The Three Bears by Byron Barton.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears Variations

Three dinos go out one day and in wanders a little girl in Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems.

Goldenlocks and the Three Pirates by April Jones Prince takes us aboard a pirate ship. The family has rowed a dinghy ashore while their gruel cools. Goldenlocks boars while they are gone and prove to be very useful. So useful, she is invited to be part of the crew.

The bears in The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett are polar bears and they live in a den.  Goldilocks is an Inuit girl who finds her way into the home of the polar bears.  This one is perfect for comparing with Brett’s version of the traditional tale (see above.)

Goldilocks and the Just Right Potty by Leigh Hodgkinson is a silly tale about a little girl looking for that just right potty. Then, she has to find that just right time when she needs to go potty. My older kids even thought this was pretty funny.

Dusty Locks and The Three Bears by Susan Lowell takes us to the southwest where Dusty has just entered the neat and tidy house of the bears.

Leola wanders into an inn run by the Honeybears in Leola and the Honeybears by Melodye Rosales.  The illustrations are a bit quirky.

Imagine discovering a house made of books in the middle of the woods.  That is just what you’ll find in Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians by Jackie Mims Hopkins.

We all know that goats like to eat just about anything so imagine when a “kid” wanders into the home of the three bears.  Find out what happens in Goatilocks and the Three Bears by Erica S. Pearl.

Set in Ghana, The Ghanaian Goldilocks by Dr Tamara Pizzoli is the only one that I know of that features a boy as Goldilocks. There are so many neat features to compare with the original tale.  It’s one of the most interesting variations on the list.

Get ready to introduce some Spanish vocabulary via singing in Rubia and the Three Osos by Susan Middleton Elya.

In Goldie and the Three Bears by Diane Stanley, Goldie is very particular about everything.  She knows what she likes and what she doesn’t.  This version of the tale is told from the perspective of Goldie.

In true role reversal, we have a bear who wanders into the Blair’s house in Somebody And The Three Blairs by Marilyn Tolhurst.

Goldi doesn’t like how she left things last time so she’s come back for a do-over in Goldilocks Returnsby Lisa Campbell Ernst.

Goldibooks and the Wee Bear by Troy Wilson is a bookish spin on the traditional story. Wee Bear is captivated by the books in a house and goes in to explore.

Goldilocks and the Three Engineers by Sue Fliess is a great STEM pick and a super fun variation on the traditional tale. The three engineer bears stumble upon a house and make some inventions just a bit more clever.

Hello Door by Alastair Heim is a very loose variation.   Instead of Goldilocks we have a sly fox who enters the house without permission and is ready to clean it out.  Well, that is until the three bears arrive.  Will he make away like a bandit?

The 12 Best Goldilocks Books for Preschool Students

Classic fairy tales are an essential part of early childhood education. Children can learn so much from them, but imagine how much more they learn when they are exposed to different variations of the story. Thankfully, when it comes to Goldilocks books, there are plenty of variations to choose from!

Why teach variations?

  • It reinforces the original story
  • Encourages creativity
  • Teaches compare and contrast
  • Encourages attention to detail
  • Exposes children to more than one way of thinking

Thankfully, there is no shortage of fun variations of this story! Here are two different original versions as well as 12 of our favorite Goldilocks books!

Jan Brett works her magic again with a beautifully illustrated version of the original tale. Thanks to her classic illustrative style, it has old-world fairytale charm.

If you’d rather use a more modern version, this is a rather tongue-in-cheek retelling of the original story. It begs to be read as dramatically as possible, especially when the bears first discover their porridge needs some time to cool.

One day, three dinosaurs just happen to cook chocolate pudding to three different temperatures, position their chairs just so, and go for a walk with their door wide open. They couldn’t possibly be setting a trap for a nosy little girl with boundary issues, no, not at all. From the endpapers with the different titles crossed out to the ridiculous “Dinosaur from Norway,” this story is a silly variation best suited for older preschoolers. One of the funniest Golidlocks Books out there!

One amazing feature of most books written by Jan Brett is the amazing side panel illustrations. The center illustration shows the main story in the center of the page, but the author provides story clues and shows what other characters are doing in the pictures along the border. It’s a great tool for predictive reading!

What happened AFTER Goldilocks escaped and the bears went on with their lives? Baby Bear is all grown up, and ends up lost in the big city! Great for preschoolers and older students alike, it has very active text (for example, the word “wobbly” is written, well, wobbly!) and clever wordplay, as well as a great twist at the end!

What if the roles are reversed and the bear is the intruder?  Somebody the Bear sneaks into the Blair’s family home and gives their food, water, and beds a try! A fantastic twist on Goldilocks books.

What happens when you replace Goldilocks with a goat that has a serious case of the munchies Preschoolers roar with laughter as the title character munches her way through the bears’ house. This little goat has a serious taste for disaster!

Goldilocks trespasses on a family of more gentle creatures in this spin-off. The word bubbles above the characters are great for teaching literary dialogue, and children will love the witty pun and silly jokes!

Again, our favorite little pesky girl with the golden curls shows up uninvited at the home of 3 rabbits. However, this time she manages to sprain her ankle and the kind family helps her heal. However, Goldie is not a very nice houseguest! This is one of the great Goldilocks books to use to discuss manners and kindness!

The three bears have a band but are having a hard time landing gigs with no lead singer. In walks Goldie, a girl with the perfect voice for the group.  This story is an interesting variation and can be a great addition to a music center in your classroom.

The author of this version does a wonderful job of incorporating the alphabet into the classic version of the story. She highlights which word is the focus of each letter. “D is for door. They headed for the door. E is for exit. Everyone exited.” A great tie-in for preschoolers just learning letters!

Our classic story goes country in this rendition. The three bears like to keep their cabin neat and tidy, but then Dusty Locks, who hates baths and could care less about making a mess, stops in for an unannounced visit when they are out. While the story is true to form, the author captures us with her use of language.  “I’ll be bumfuzzled” is sure to become a favorite saying in your classroom when you read this book to your little cowpokes!

Sibling rivalry at its best! Poor little Goldie Locks doesn’t leave home in this book. Instead, she’s now quarantined with a nasty case of chicken pox. Her brother teases her terribly about it while her fairytale friends stop by to visit. This book opens itself up for a discussion on germs, how they spread and how to keep healthy.

Goldilocks has grown up in this rendition, but she hasn’t changed her meddling ways. Fifty years after her initial trespassing incident, she decides to go back to the scene of the crime and make things right. She replaces the bears’ food with fat-free bars, restuffs their beds, and fixes their chairs. Clearly, Goldilocks transformed from naughty nosy little girl to full-blown meddling granny!

Dream Goldilocks | Scary stories

My relatives and I then went to rest in the village, in the house where my great-grandmother used to live. After her death, the house was empty. At that time, only three people came to the house: me, my mother and my aunt. Nothing much happened during the day. Therefore, it seemed very strange to me that in the middle of the night someone was crying loudly.

I got up with difficulty and went to the voice. In the next room, I found a sobbing aunt and a mother who fussed around her. It was then that I learned our family legend about the golden-haired girl.

All relatives have long noticed that if someone had a dream about this beauty, then someone will surely die. She came in dreams all pale, white, as if frightened by something. And as soon as she touched the hand of a person who would soon leave for another world, she immediately became completely black. She took the deceased into her chariot, and having soared strashno.com to the very sky, she took away into the distance. And already there, in the sky, her hair turned into golden curls, freckles appeared on her face, and all of her became somehow sunny, cheerful, joyful. And her chariot, becoming golden, soon merged with the sun.

Who first saw this girl is unknown. They say that even the great-grandmothers whom she dreamed of knew exactly who had just died. Sometimes it happened at dawn, sometimes during daytime sleep, and it also happened that a person sitting at the table suddenly fell asleep to see who this time would be taken by goldilocks.

— And who did you see? Mother asked nervously.

“Ninku,” the aunt answered curtly, adding immediately. She almost reached for it when I yelled. The girl seemed to be frightened, pulled her hand, but still touched my daughter. And then I remember only the chariot, strashno.com soared up.

Nothing further could be made out. These were the lamentations of a woman who had just lost a child.

I went out onto the porch and nervously lit a cigarette. My cousin was a beautiful young woman who got married about a year ago. Cheerful and happy. Her death would have been a great shock for everyone, and the very possibility of this seemed unlikely and implausible.

I decided it was imperative to call the city to make sure everything was in order. The hour was late, the neighbors were sleeping. Cellular communication is not established here yet. After standing near the house for a while, I went to my childhood friend, whom it was not shameful to wake up. Opening the door, he grumbled a little, but nevertheless let me in, taking me to the phone.

The news that my sister was in the hospital shocked me. No one could really explain to me what exactly happened. Breaking away, I ran to the strashno.com house, where, as it turned out, my aunt and mother were already waiting for me. They have already managed to collect things and pack them into the car.

A couple of hours later we were at the hospital. The sister was alive. But, as it turned out, she had a miscarriage.

Nobody knew about her pregnancy. She then made excuses for a long time that she wanted to tell on her husband's birthday. But the fetus did not live up to this moment, so the mother and aunt did not know anything about this. I don't know what the sister said to them, but there was no more talk about it.
