The legend of the origin of the teddy bear
Traditionally, the name Teddy is associated with the name of the 26th US President Theodore Roosevelt. It all started November 14, 1902, when Roosevelt, at the invitation of Mississippi Governor Andrew Longino, went on a bear hunt, common among the top figures of the time. Their guide was a gamekeeper named Holt Collier. The hunt was planned as a 10-day excursion, and on its second day Collier's hounds attacked the trail of the beast. A cornered 100-kilogram black bear fought off dogs with its paws and crushed one to death in a fight. Wanting to save the prey for the president who had fallen behind the hunters, but realizing that the dogs were in danger, Collier smashed the bear's skull with a rifle. Then he tied him to a tree and waited for Roosevelt to shoot the beast.
When the president caught up with the huntsman, he saw a terrible picture: a bloody, choking bear, wounded dogs and a crowd of screaming hunters. Theodore considered such an act unsportsmanlike and refused to kill a defenseless animal.
Caricature by Clifford C. BerrymanNews of Roosevelt's "compassionate" gesture soon made headlines across the country, and on November 16, a drawing by cartoonist Clifford C. Berryman appeared in the Washington Post. In it, Roosevelt stands with his back to a frightened bear cub. According to some sources, the newspaper cartoon entitled "Drawing the Line in Mississippi" was a reference not only to Roosevelt's refusal to shoot the bear, but also to his hesitation in resolving the border dispute between the states of Mississippi and Louisiana.
Many people saw the cartoon, including Morris Michtom, owner of a small candy store. Inspired by the drawing, his wife Rose sewed a teddy bear and then displayed it in a window display along with a newspaper article and the words "Teddy's Bear". The original Teddy bear had a plump body, a triangular face, and long arms and legs. The bear immediately found dozens of buyers.
Then Morris felt it necessary to ask the president for permission to use Teddy's name for the toy. With approval, he began mass-producing teddy bears, which were so popular that the Michtoms soon founded the Ideal Toy Company.

Also in 1902 in Germany, the Steiff stuffed toy company, owned by Margaret Steiff, began making their own teddy bear. The idea for the toy came from Margaret's nephew, Richard Steif, who often watched real cubs at the zoo. The bears, called Bear 55 PB, were hand-sewn from plush and stuffed with wood shavings. Richard also taught the little animals to move their paws using a hinge system. Margaret herself was rather skeptical, but allowed Richard to present the creation at the Leipzig Toy Fair. The breakthrough came when the teddy bear was spotted by an American businessman who signed Steiff's first major contract for 3,000 teddy bears.
Popularity Teddy Bear
Stuffed toys have become a hit among adults and children. Tourists who flocked to the boardwalks of New Jersey's seaside resorts took the teddy bears home as souvenirs. Women's magazines advertised accessories for bears and offered up-to-date patterns for tailoring bear clothes. But not everyone was delighted with the popularity of Teddy bears. Saint Joseph Catholic Church priest Michael J. Esper believed that a toy animal in the hands of little girls could destroy maternal instincts and further lead to "racial suicide. " In his sermon, he argued: "Racial suicide is a serious danger that is fueled and encouraged by the fashion to replace the good old dolls of our childhood with a terrible monster known as Teddy Bear."
Newspaper articles accusing Teddy Bear of destroying the maternal instinct in little girlsNevertheless, the plush boom was unstoppable. Teddy Bear has ceased to be just a toy and has found its way into books and music. The first book about the adventures of a teddy bear was written in 1907 by writer Alice Scott. In total, during the existence of Teddy Bear, about 400 books by various authors were published around the world, in which the main character was a friendly bear. Among the most famous is the story of the English writer Alexander Milne "Winnie the Pooh", published in 1926, and Michael Bond's Paddington Bear, first published in 1958.
In the same 1907, the American composer Jay Kay Bratton showed the world a melody called "The Teddy Bear Two Step", which in 1932, after writing poems for it, turned into the song "The Teddy Bear's Picnic". Many performers considered it an honor to sing it, but Henry Hall was the first to do it. In 1957, the bear was featured on the soundtrack performed by rock and roll legend Elvis Presley for the film Loving You. The hit was called "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear". By the way, Elvis really had a favorite teddy bear.

Over time, Teddy Bear also entered the film industry. In 1909, the cartoon Little Johnny and the Teddy Bears was filmed in the USA, and 15 years later, Walt Disney released the short film Alice and the Three Bears.
Love for bear cubs has influenced the expansion of the geography of countries involved in the manufacture of plush toys. Now Teddy Bear was produced not only in Germany and the USA, but in the UK, Scotland and even Japan. Over time, not only the design and materials of plush animals changed, but also the functionality, for example, the bears learned to jump and dance. From mid 19In the 1920s, the production of bears began, embodying a certain professional field, for example, bears-doctors, firefighters, sailors, schoolchildren, etc. In addition, Teddy Bears often became participants in historical events. In 1912, the company Steiff, already familiar to us, produced a series of black teddy bears in memory of the dead passengers of the Titanic. During the First and Second World Wars, Teddies became popular as talismans - soldiers took bears with them to the front, which reminded them of their families, relatives and home comfort.
The world's most expensive teddy bear, created by Steiff in collaboration with Louis VuittonIn the mid-1970s, teddy artists emerged. These are craftsmen who make Teddy bears by hand, in a single copy. Their work is considered unique and popular with teddy bear collectors who call themselves arctophiles. In the wake of the popularity of rare toys, auction houses began to regularly hold special auctions. To date, the most expensive bear in the world is the Teddy Bear, released by Steiff in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. This stylish teddy bear in a raincoat with a branded monogram and a small suitcase was sold at Christie's in 2000 for $ 2.1 million.
In 1998, the Teddy Bear was inducted into the US National Toy Hall of Fame, establishing itself as one of the world's most iconic toys.
Teddy Bear is in fashion
The fashion industry has always been a mirror of public sentiment, so it was only a matter of time before a teddy bear appeared on the catwalk. After a successful collaboration with toy manufacturer Steiff, French fashion house Louis Vuitton released its own version of the bear called Doudou, which first appeared in Marc Jacobs' Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2005 Menswear collection. The image of a young man in pajamas and a coat, holding a brown teddy bear with the LV monogram, was inspired by the novel Brideshead Revisited by the writer Evelyn Waugh, and in particular by one of the heroes of the book, Sebastian Flyte, a representative of an old family of British aristocrats, who very often carried a teddy bear with him. bear, not wanting to part with childhood. Years later, Virgil Abloh showed the toy again at the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2021 Menswear show. This time, the designer used the bear as an attribute to recreate "a wondrous land of inclusion and unity, representing the world through the unsullied vision of a child not yet corrupted by social programming."

However, Louis Vuitton was not the first to use the bear in his work. In 1988, French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac introduced a coat made entirely of teddy bears, which became his hallmark and started a whole new trend (think the Snoopy puppy jacket and the iconic frog jacket). In 2008, Castelbajac revisited the bear theme with a small toy with a cloud print.
For Ralph Lauren, the bear has become not just an addition to the collection, but a real symbol. In the late 1980s, Ralph Lauren and his brother Jerry received Polo Ralph Lauren teddy bears from their team. Ralph liked the gift so much that he organized a collaboration with Steiff, which lasted from 1990 to 2001. As part of the cooperation, the partners produced toys, as well as clothes with the image of a bear. In 2013, Polo Bear returned and since then has not disappeared from the company's range. Often he becomes the hero of fashion collaborations, for example with the Palace skate brand.

Steiff's collaborations with Polo Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton have launched a series of collaborations between the toymaker and fashion brands and designers. In 2008, designer Karl Lagerfeld teamed up with Steiff to create a haute couture teddy bear reminiscent of himself, down to his signature black and white suit, belt buckle and goggles. Streetwear brands also resorted to the help of the German company for the production of plush toys - in 2018, Supreme presented the Elmar bear in a hoodie with a boxing logo, and in a fragment design, turned Steiff's signature bear into a fluffy carpet, complete with a tag with zippers.
Soft toys often appeared in the portfolio of Jeremy Scott. In 2010, he decorated adidas Originals sneakers with teddy bear heads, and in 2015, he turned the Teddy Bear into the unofficial Moschino logo. In the same year, the now-defunct London brand Sibling brought models to the catwalk with solid-color knitted teddy bears in their hands. Another interpretation of the toy was waiting for us at the Fenty x Puma Fall/Winter 2017 RTW show. Then Rihanna included a carrot-colored backpack in the shape of a teddy bear in a collection with a sports brand. Also, the image of a bear on their products at different times was used by Gucci, Amiri and Bobby Abley, among others.

Bears are back in the spotlight in spring 2022, thanks to Thom Browne's Fall/Winter 2022 RTW collection. The show was dedicated to New York as the "island of bad toys" where people come in search of themselves, and among its guests were not only celebrities and influential figures of the fashion industry, but also 500 teddy bears sitting on miniature chairs in signature gray jackets. American brand. The presentation, organized in the Teddy Talk format (a reference to the TED Talk conferences), turned the audience back into children for a moment, wrapping them in an atmosphere of happiness and fun, and became an important reminder to cherish children's moments and be true to yourself, even despite the political and economic unstable times.
