Calligraphy start: first experience, tools, tips

“Being a calligrapher is almost the same as being a dancer: you need to practice every day to become a master,” Nicolas Uschenier.

Only 25-30 years of rapid development of technology - and we live in a world where paper for writing is replaced by displays, e-books in bags have replaced ordinary ones, and children learn to type on the keyboard before they pick up a pen. In this context, it may seem that calligraphy is a doomed art. But it's not.

What unites fashionistas Dior, the White House and IT giant Apple?

Let's look for a second to Paris, to the shows of fashion houses Dior, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin. Each guest, from the first place at the podium to the last one at the entrance, has personalized invitations in their hands, made in an excellent calligraphic style. All cards were designed by one person - French calligrapher Nicolas Ushenir.

Not only does he hand-sign about 15,000 cards per season, but he also comes up with new fonts, logos, and “graphic cards” for the brand for discerning clients. The master had good handwriting since childhood, but then he could not even dream that stylish curls and letters could become a real profession and open the doors of legendary houses for him.

The leaders of the IT market use the ancient art of "beautiful writing". Apple invited American calligrapher Jake Weidmann, who has the rare title Master Penmen, to present the new iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil stylus. In the promo video, Jack uses a stylus to mimic the movements of the pen and draw something incredible on the screen of the tablet. In fact, the master never changes handwriting: he is sure that the human hand is the best tool capable of creating, if not ideal, but filled with meaning, inscriptions and paintings.

Calligraphy has a special place in the life of the White House. Individual office staff are responsible for all letters, address envelopes, invitations, and notices sent out by the residence of the President of the United States. In high-level diplomacy, with the help of the personal nature of correspondence, they emphasize respect for the addressee. And even the cards with the names of the guests at the Thanksgiving holiday table are also written by in-house calligraphers.

Why learn calligraphy

Anyone who wants to learn how to make sophisticated inscriptions on envelopes, postcards, invitations to a party and a wedding can. Even if now it seems that you are capable of ruining a notebook with illegible handwriting, with due diligence everything will work out. You can love calligraphy for the fact that it contributes to artistic self-expression, teaches patience and accuracy: try not to spill ink on the table and not rub the symbol so carefully drawn.

This hobby takes a little time, and the minimum set of tools will not require significant financial costs. In the end, is it really not interesting to touch the ancient traditions of “beautiful writing”, dating back not only to the history of European civilization - Ancient Greece and Rome, but also to eastern China and Japan?

How to choose the first tools

Let's start with the main tool of calligraphy - the conditional pen. In fact, today it can be a metal pen with a holder, a fountain pen, a rollerball pen, a brush pen, a more modern brushpen, and even a real quill pen. The choice of tool depends on your "experience" in calligraphy, the style and font you want to learn.

Beginners will find it easier to handle a fountain or rollerball pen that can be refilled with ready-made ink cartridges of different colors. Some crafters also recommend a pointed metal nib and a simple straight holder made of metal or wood. Beveled holder - for more experienced students. It allows you to change the angle of the pen and experiment, for example, with the Latin alphabet.

There is also a wide nib suitable for Italic and Gothic fonts. Working with him is not easy, but interesting. It is less flexible when pressed than pointed nibs. It is often chosen by lefties. The thickness of the pen is indicated on the packaging in millimeters.

After the first lessons, you can purchase a set of nibs of different flexibility with a holder in order to individually select the thickness of the lines.

Chinese and Japanese traditional calligraphy uses brushes rather than pens to draw characters. As a rule, the bristles on the brushes are made of synthetic materials, so they stick together well. The brushes are suitable for so-called "square" fonts.

Brush pen is a modern implementation of the brush. It is filled with a cartridge, and not dipped in an inkwell. There are also brushpens, which are essentially a marker with a brush. They are much easier to write with.

Paper

For beginners, drawing paper with a smooth surface is more suitable (from 90 g/m2). Lettering looks beautiful on textured sheets, but in order to learn how to draw clear, even and precise lines, you need to avoid excessive friction of the pen on the surface of the paper.

If you choose the so-called design paper or drawing paper, which is thin and smooth, you can put a template with lines and an alphabet under it and practice the first strokes according to the example.

It is convenient to use albums with 125 g/m2 paper and special sizing, thanks to which the ink does not show through on the reverse side.

In addition to specialized calligraphic paper, the Rhodia Dot Pad is also suitable - the dots on the pages of the notebook will help you line up the inscription correctly.

Parchment paper can be selected for Oriental calligraphy. Having mastered the basics of technology, give free rein to your imagination and look for materials to your liking.

Ink, cartridges, ink

Pointy nibs and brushes require ink and ink bottles, while rollerball pens, fountain pens and brushpens require refill cartridges. If the pen is equipped with a refillable cartridge, do not dip it into the ink tank.

Although modern tools are comfortable and allow you to write neatly, working with an inkwell at hand will bring special pleasure from inheriting traditions. But you need to be careful not to stain the paper, the table, your hands and everything around. Place a container of water next to it and have a piece of cloth ready to clean the feather if necessary.

There is a non-waterproof dye-based ink, one learns with it by refilling fountain pens or pens with refillable containers. Pigment ink (ink or Sumi ink) is waterproof, but it will destroy a fountain pen and is only good for nibs. For pointed thin brushes, gold, white or silver indelible ink is also suitable. Here's how you can draw her on white and dark paper.

Experienced calligraphers manage to write not only with colored ink, but also with gouache, watercolor and acrylic paints - it looks unusual, but who said that you can't fantasize in calligraphy?

Where to start?

Pay attention to the organization of the workspace. Let there be a lot of free space on the table and few unnecessary items. The hand should lie comfortably and hold the pen at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the inkwell to the right of your hand (if you are left-handed, then to the left) so as not to accidentally turn it over. Many calligraphers advise writing on an inclined surface, like an easel or an old school desk.

Before using a new pen for the first time, the oil coating must be removed from it, otherwise it will not glide smoothly on paper. Use alcohol or a special feather cleaning solution for this.

After you have finished your work, wash off the regular ink with lightly soapy water and dry the pen. Waterproof ink, acrylic or Indian (pigment) ink must be removed with a special solution.

Remember the writing lessons in 1st grade? And now, first of all, you will have to learn how to draw straight lines and curves. Calligraphic curves have a peculiarity: the line that goes up should be thin, and going down, on the contrary, thick. Vary the pen pressure, but don't push too hard, and the lines will be correct.

When the elements of letters are mastered, it's time to move on to letters, and only then to individual words. Learn the style of each letter of the font you choose. A notebook with calligraphic exercises or template sheets will help with this. Those parts of the letters that are below the line should be parallel to each other.

First of all, we advise you to watch the lessons of the owner of the London calligraphy studio Paul Antonio, which will help you take your first steps in calligraphy. The master's clients are the jewelry house Tiffany, Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton. Here are some basic entry-level videos: First touches, How to choose a brush for calligraphy, Selection of tools and tips for using them. The calligrapher has his own YouTube channel, which contains a lot of educational materials.

Three more useful lessons for beginners: Lesson 1. How to hold the pen and draw straight lines. Lesson 2. Draw curves and first letters. Lesson 3. Letters for beginners.
