Boom Chicka Boom by Johnny Cash (Album, Country): Reviews, Ratings, Credits, Song list

Most people have some weird idea in their head that Johnny Cash put out a few great songs in the '50s, recorded a classic live album in the '60s, released a couple of novelty songs and then sleepwalked through his career until American Recordings managed to make him a star again.

Truth is, like most major artists from his town, he released a steady stream of albums of varied quality and frequently had his ups and downs. This particular release, though it didn't sell well, is definitely one of the better examples of his later work before his career suddenly took off again in his later years.

Most of what is here is covers and standards. "A Backstage Pass" is quite humorous, and his version of "Cat's in the Cradle" is much better than Ugly Kid Joe's from around the same time. "Family Bible" gets the solid reading you would expect from Cash.

It is a short, compact release, and it has a polished '90s sound though it doesn't sound anything like the country-rock hybrid that was (and mostly still is) popular at the time. Yes, his material from 1994 on was generally better, but he had a 40-year career up to that point which one simply should not let go by the wayside.

Good sound - not so good songs!

This was Cash's fourth release for Mercury Records. At the time of release I found the whole album, a little disappointing, and coming back almost 30 years later, I feel the same way. I actually found I did like the overall sound, it all sounds so clear and you can pick out all the instruments. Cash's voice is noticeably deeper than during the 60's/70's, and sounds great.

The problem for me is the songwriting or the choice of songs. There are 3 songs that are light and fun; which I think gives the album an unbalanced feel. These type of songs, are OK, but they are not the sort of things I want to hear over and over. Two were written by Cash - one is "A Backstage Pass", about all the people Cash saw backstage at a Willie Nelson concert "and David Allan Coe", this version seems to be live and raises a few laughs from the audience. The other is "Farmer's Almanac" which again has some nice lines - "Lies have to be covered up, truth can run around naked" it sort of reminds me of Roger Miller's writing. The final one is "Harley" , on which Michael Martin Murphey has a credit - about a a guy working on a car production line, who makes it rich and leaves, then all his life goes to hell and he ends up back on the line - where he "just about gets by with a little overtime", reminds me of the song "One Piece At A Time". These songs are all pretty good.

The best song is the excellent trucking song ""Monteagle Mountain" it was written by Cash's manager, Richard McGibony, about a treacherous stretch of the highway in Tennessee, which is also mentioned in Jerry Reed's theme song to Smokey and the Bandit. There is also a very good version of "Family Bible", which has Cash's mother singing harmony on the choruses. The song was written by Willie Nelson, when he was a struggling songwriter, and was sold for $50, so he has no writing credits on the song. This is the story that is directly referenced in the lyrics to "Backstage Pass", the artist in question was Claude Gray.

After that there are a group of songs that really just amount to filler. A song about being friends, and friendship "That's One You Owe Me" which has The Jordanaires on harmony. A couple of the Cash written tunes which come across as very light "I Love You, Love You" and eco-themed "Don't Go Near the Water" they don't seem to go anywhere - not songs I would come back to.

Finally there are a group of covers, that just don't seem to work. The Harry Chapin song "Cat's in the Cradle" which sort of has a rock sound to it. Elvis Costello's "Hidden Shame" which is simply just not very good - not sure why they decided to record it? Then there is a version of the great Tom Russell song "Veteran's Day" which is given a feel that is too positive, and uptempo for what is a dark theme, veterans of the Vietnam war, MIA like Willem Dafoe, in The Deer Hunter. I wish they had gone for a more acoustic, and slower rhythm more in keeping with the theme, it would have been a killer track.

I don't really recommend the album, but I am sure Cash fans will find something they like.
