Table of English Irregular Verbs with Translation and Pronunciation

Irregular English verbs are listed below in alphabetical order. They differ from the usual ones in the way they form the past tense forms - past simple and past participle. If in the case of ordinary, regular verbs we simply add the ending -ed, then there is no single rule for irregular verbs. That is why each of them must be memorized separately. See a more detailed explanation of irregular verbs and go through useful exercises on very basic and more complex verbs.

Are these all irregular verbs?

No, actually there are even more. In this table of irregular verbs in English, we have not listed rarely used verbs or obsolete forms that you no longer find in modern English. For example, shoe - shod - shod (shoe, shoe).

In addition, if you add the prefixes a-, be-, for-, in-, inter-, mis-, off-, out-, over-, pre-, re-, un-, under-, up-, with-, then its past tense forms will not change, so there is no point in writing them separately. For example, overhear (eavesdrop) changes in the same way as hear: overhear - overheard - overheard. And misunderstand (misunderstood) is the same as understand: misunderstand - misunderstood - misunderstood.

Why do some verbs have two past tenses? And do you need to learn both?

Like any other modern language, English is constantly evolving and changing. Irregular verbs have been heavily influenced by American English with its tendency towards simplification. Therefore, the first and main difference is between the British and American versions.
