Search Tips
The main problems with finding information are often associated with poor choice of keywords. Both individual words and phrases can be used as keywords. All auxiliary words (prepositions, conjunctions, particles, etc.) are not considered keywords. Terms with a low frequency of occurrence should not be included in the search, and frequently occurring terms should be used with other words that narrow their meaning. For example, "architecture of Moscow", "monuments of Moscow".
Distinguish the topic title from the search query - a set of keywords that are entered in the "search" line. The search query may consist of one or more words or phrases.
Topic: "The principle of historicism in scientific research".
Keywords: scientific research, principle of historicism, philosophy of history, historical process, trends, progress, regression, context.
The logical operators AND (AND), OR (OR), NOT (NOT) and proximity operator NEAR are used to connect keywords in a search phrase, narrow or expand the search.
operator | operator job description | request example |
AND (AND) | search for documents containing both words joined by operator | museum & public Renaissance AND Humanism ( both words must be in found documents) |
OR (OR) | search for documents containing at least one of the words joined by operator
This operator is also used for alternatives
| veto OR prohibition (or the word "veto" or the word "ban" must to be found in documents) whigs OR tory Moldova OR Moldova USA OR United States Second World War OR World War II |
NOT | is used before words that must be present in the document delete. Operator NOT is used only in case of full negation of concepts | Ancient history NOT Julius Caesar (documents that contain will be excluded from the searchphrase "Julius Caesar") presbyterian NOT England |
Near /n | The proximity operator indicates that the second term must be at distance from the first, not exceeding a certain number of words. The proximity operator can replace the preposition "in". Also requests for Proximity is useful for finding the exact name of an institution, because this allows you to find all references to the institution in various cases | second/0 half/XV war NEAR5 prisoners of war Napoleon/1 Moscow Reformation NEAR5 Germany |
Logical operators can be combined with each other
Byzantium AND Crusaders OR Crusades
Exact search for phrase
double quotes - strict match operator. Used to find exact terms or phrases. Words enclosed in quotation marks will appear in all search results in the order you typed them without applications of morphological declension of words. Hyphen, dash are analogous to operator NOT and therefore words and expressions in which they are used must also be enclosed in quotation marks
| "Crimean War" "double standards" "1917-1921" "Soviet-Finnish war" |
Parentheses can be used to build complex queries ( )
they set the order of the logical operators (the operations inside the brackets are performed first, and then between the brackets)
(Russia/5 Germany) AND "1914-1917" No review
(literature AND ("second half" AND XIX))
You can use additional search options - wildcards to expand your search.
The * character is used as a replacement character for any number of letters at the end of a word.
intelligence* (intelligence, intelligence, intelligence activities)
histor* (history, historic, historiograhy)
The question mark replaces any single letter. Not used in dates and numbers.
Levashov (Levashov, Levashov)
wom?n (woman, women)
Pay attention to what keywords, headings the found relevant documents are equipped with, study the titles and annotations of those sources that you received during the search in order to conduct a second search with these keywords already.
Do not forget to check the spelling in the spelling of words.
You can get advice on searching in electronic resources in the reference and bibliographic department (room 306) or by e-mail [email protected] (marked consultation).
