In our survey, not everyone remembered these lines of Innokenty Annensky as a classic of the Silver Age. We still do not fully realize how unsteady the boundaries between the "correct state", high book and popular song culture. For example, Russian chanson is considered a low genre, an example of bad taste, and even mixed with the vulgar sentimentality of the prison subculture. However, prison researchers noticed that Sergei Yesenin's poems are sung in the zone as folk. “I am a Moscow mischievous reveler” is one of the most popular chanson texts. Although the same text entered the history of high book literature as an example of the position of a Russian poet. Osip Mandelstam said that he would forgive Yesenin anything for a line from this poem "I did not shoot the unfortunate in dungeons."

This is the first thing we discovered in the study: not only Pushkin and Blok, but also rock musicians Viktor Tsoi (certainly, for a long time - apparently, forever) and Yuri Shevchuk are firmly rooted in the modern poetic canon. The folk classic Vladimir Vysotsky also becomes the canon of "book verse", but it sounds in the same "tonality" as Yesenin's song or "I am free" of the Aria group. Soviet classics also remain in our culture: Dobronravov’s “An Unfamiliar Star Is Shining” and Simonov’s “Wait for Me” are not supplanted by rock and new pop music.

In a mass survey commissioned by RR by the sociological service of the portal Superjob.ru, of course, Pushkin and Yesenin are in the first places - if we are talking about poetry. And in the song ratings “Victory Day” and “I Want Changes” of the Kino group, they are almost on an equal footing. In a survey conducted on the pages of "RR" in social networks, we did not separate songs and poems, participants could write several quotes. In it, Joseph Brodsky is even ahead of Pushkin, which means that he will also enter (if he has not already entered) into the national canon.

- Brodsky today is Yesenin of our days. It can also be dramatic, pathetic, socially bright, - says the poet, critic and publisher Alexander Shatalov.

In our top 100, we deliberately left one quote from each author to make it more interesting to study and to see the deep layers of our "cultural code". It is clear that this list is precisely “folk”, and not “the best poems” (whatever that means), not an expert assessment of philologists. The authors are placed in it in accordance with the frequency of mentions in polls. Significant differences in popularity can be seen in the first half of the list, and then they often fluctuate within the statistical error, so it was not easy to determine the exact place in the hundred. But this does not bother us, because the purpose of our research is not the taste of the audience. It is much more interesting how popular poems and songs "work" in our lives.

Love and death

“I loved you” is already so canon that it is many times canon, even as a quote. "I loved you. Love is still / (maybe just pain) / drills my brains, ”wrote Joseph Brodsky over Pushkin.

— What is poetry? Poetry is Pushkin. What is Pushkin? “I remember a wonderful moment,” social psychologist Alexei Roshchin comments on the results of our study. — This is what is called in psychology, normative answers. People mention what they think they should know. Accordingly, the standard for the most active generation is Pushkin, the stalk of Russian culture. The younger generation, apparently, no longer knows Pushkin, but only remembers the primer and what is connected with it. Fifth grade, "I love a thunderstorm in early May" by Tyutchev. “Night, street, lamp...” is a phrase from an advertisement.

Pushkin is called everything, many different things. But there are also subtle generational differences. Pushkin does not go away, but becomes less dominant in the younger generations; Let's say Alexander Blok comes forward.

“Apparently, Pushkin's lines sound less today than Blok's lines, which carry a completely different energy and, perhaps, a different content,” says Alexander Shatalov. - If young people come across poems, they are more likely to encounter them in the headings of articles, in epigraphs, and so on. Why are poems in headlines? Because they correspond to the content of these articles. The energy in the poem is the manifestation of the social state in society. That is, of course, Blok as a singer of beauty, female mystery is now less in demand than Blok of the period of the poem "12" or Blok of the period of tragic decline.

- Young people did not choose "I remember a wonderful moment" so often, primarily because there are a fair number of clips, including commercials, for "Night, street, lamp, pharmacy ...". But at the same time, the rhyme is still taught at school, which is why it is immediately remembered,” says Andrey Nemzer, a literary historian and literary critic, professor at the Higher School of Economics.

- I have only hypotheses about generational differences. In schools, the middle-aged generation that chose “I Remember a Wonderful Moment” had literature teachers who studied Pushkin thoroughly,” says Efim Rachevsky, a national teacher of Russia, director of the Tsaritsyno Education Center. - And for the younger generation, the number of hours of literature in schools since the end of 1990s has decreased, so the spread is greater, and Pushkin has ceased to dominate them. In addition, the younger generation reads less poetry. Just less. Pushkin, who wrote "I remember a wonderful moment", creates the image of an extraordinary woman in his fantasy dreams. And if screen technologies dominate, the key word here is remember. What to remember if you can open an iPhone and look at a photo? I looked, saw, was delighted, kissed the monitor and went on to do business.

It is also interesting that in the answers of the most adult respondents (45 years and older), Yesenin and his poem “I do not regret, I do not call, I do not cry ...” appear in the first place

- Yesenin is in the first line because, of course, he is the most Russian poet, - says Shatalov. - He has the most beloved fate, so when people drink, they will be happy to quote Yesenin's poems about the tragic life spent.

And here we see something that is common in all generations where poetry is needed as a way of meditating about life, like lyrics. All the main poems in the polls are not so much about love as about parting, and most of all about the finiteness of life. “If you die, you will start again from the beginning” (Blok), “Everything will pass like smoke from white apple trees” (Yesenin), “Alas! he does not seek happiness / And he does not run from happiness! (Lermontov), ​​“Water has neither death nor bottom. I say goodbye to you "(Yuri Shevchuk, group" DDT ").

Russian canonical lyrics are sad and reflective.

The female part of the respondents does not quite agree with this. From her point of view, the canonical list of poems clearly lacks the proper canon of love confession, happy love.

“Of course, young girls love Marina Tsvetaeva,” says Shatalov. - Her tragic perception of life directly hits the Russian girls. When I was young, her poems were copied by hand into girls' diaries. Adult women love Akhmatova more than Tsvetaeva, these are completely different, but still relevant female psychotypes.

Interestingly, the most popular lines of Marina Tsvetaeva “I like that you are not sick of me…” are a kind of female response to “I loved you…”: the same poetics of parting, non-meeting, and this high sadness directly falls into catastrophic canon of Russian lyrics.

Therefore, in the preferences of women in the poll at much higher positions than the great Tsvetaeva, quite simple and unimportant songs suddenly appear. For example, in the top ten there is even a popular song “Call me with you ...”, and not far away is “God, what a man”, which Natalie sings: “You are Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt in one bottle, / How the best you are written on the phone ".

And the most powerful and at the same time recognized by all verse about happiness in love, oddly enough - military. This is “Wait for me” by Konstantin Simonov: “You saved me by your expectation. ” And, in addition, "Katyusha" and "Smuglyanka", which are associated with the war.

War and motherland

The undisputed leader among the songs is "Victory Day" to the verses of Vladimir Kharitonov. This applies to all age groups of respondents, except for the youngest (under 24 years old), who placed her in eleventh place, and in first place - Viktor Tsoi's song "Changes!"

“If the survey had not been conducted immediately after the seventieth anniversary of the Victory, we would not have received the song “Victory Day” either in first, second, or tenth place,” says psychologist Anatoly Dobin. “Very often we see not so much a reflection of the general interest, how much is what has been aroused in the mind in recent months.

But there are a lot of poems and songs in a hundred, one way or another connected with the war. If we had conducted the survey at a different time, places and arrangements would have changed, but not this list itself. According to Dobin, there is a certain Russianness in the respondents' sympathy for the songs of the war years, this is a longing for the lost, typical of our people:

- Longing for a loved one or a loved one, nostalgia is the number one motive in a Russian song. It may not even be an object of love, not even a woman or a man, but, say, a golden city. The same applies to the songs of the war years. In these topics about our glorious past, there is a desire to be united. This is also longing - a longing for unity, a desire to overcome one's individual mortal shell, individual essence, a sense of loss or limitation.

In this sense, military songs in Soviet culture are very similar to classical Russian sad lyrics. Military songs may even look like a march, but the lyrics are still lyrical. “Victory Day, how far away it was from us / As an ember melted in an extinct fire.” Alexey Surkov back in November 19At the age of 41, at the very beginning of the war, when victory was very far away, he wrote: “I am warm in a cold dugout / From my unquenchable love.”

“There is no such family in Russia where its hero is not remembered” — that is why military poems and songs in our culture are the canon of both love poems and homeland poems.

Here, too, it seems as if our canon lacks peaceful civic lyrics and songs about the homeland, and this place is filled, for example, by “The Town” or “I found out that I have a huge family” - a rhyme that the hero of the film recites “ Brother-2 "Danila Bagrov, climbing up the fire escape with a weapon in his hands. That is, he became almost a military man.

The Russian poetic canon speaks calmly about the homeland in the landscape genre (“I love a thunderstorm in early May”). Which partly rhymes with the continuation in the best samples of rock poetry, but this is another song: “In an open field - slanting rains. / Hey, poverty - not a spear for the soul! / I didn’t know where I am, where is Russia / And where would I be without her? (Alexander Bashlachev) or “The Turks build dummies / Holy Russia in half an hour ...” (group “Aquarium”).

Freedom and rebellion

Viktor Tsoi is loved even more than in the 1980s, and it seems that he has firmly become a canon for all generations, except for the oldest ones. Respondents aged 25 to 35 put on the song "Changes!" in second place after Victory Day. In the rating of the age category "35-44", the second place was taken by the song "I don't love" (Vysotsky), followed by "I'm free" (group "Aria"), but then all the same "Change!" and other songs of Tsoi.

“I deeply doubt that those who indicated “Victory Day” play this song in their player in the evening or meet their morning with it,” music critic, writer and radio host Mikhail Margolis expresses skepticism. - It seems to me that with the song "Change!" Viktor Tsoi is a more real situation, people really listen to her. I have nothing against the song "Victory Day", a good and meaningful song, but the fact that there are a lot of military songs in the answers of respondents, just those who were young in the era of the Kino group, is rather the influence of the moment.

Different generations name songs where one can hear an echo of rebellion, striving for radical, boundless freedom. Their minimum, and they are very loved - so much so that Lermontov's "Sail" and Vysotsky's "Sail" or his "I don't love" and "I'm free" of the Aria group seem to be one and the same part of our culture.

The canon of the sixties Yesenin, in general, is also about this: a guy with a broad soul who loves to drink, fight and cry enough over the fate of his homeland and people, and most importantly, jump out of himself into some kind of indefinite, lofty freedom that requires a feat.

This is how the group "Aria" sings. Judging by the polls, women and girls don’t like it very much, but what to do - men and boys in Russia are like this:

This song has already ceased to be the anthem of perestroika, it was performed along with military and folk songs on Red Square on the Day of Russia.

Prayer

Russian poetry remains more than poetry, in the sense that popular poems are also a way to find some kind of picture of the world in place of those destroyed and unfinished in our culture as a result of the fractures of the twentieth century.

The oldest form of verse, prayer, is rarely seen in secular poetry. It so happened in our culture that traditional Russian spiritual verse and high European-type literature historically developed in their own ways, meeting infrequently. So much so that we hardly notice the most obvious in the lyrics. “How, God forbid you, beloved, to be different,” is a real blessing already in the most popular Russian verse. Where else?

“I don’t like violence and powerlessness, / It’s just a pity for the crucified Christ,” Vladimir Vysotsky sang, and this, if not prayer, then part of it, confession, self-giving. “If you look at our list of one hundred verses and try to see which verse continues the same intonation on the same note, then the lines of Joseph Brodsky “I entered the cage instead of a wild beast ...” The same intonation, the same tragic and sober look on life, the same tragic "I". Gratitude to whom? This is a verse that has become a prayer.

The same thing happens in many of the most secular Russian poems, including rock poetry. As in the terrible song of Yanka Diaghileva, a prayer-blessing suddenly appears:

How to make everyone feel good?

“I learned to live simply, wisely, / Look at the sky and pray to God,” is Anna Akhmatova's most popular verse among the people today. This motive is not only in high book poetry. The song performed in the folk chanson genre by Grigory Leps sounds like a prayer of thanks: “I am baptized, or maybe anointed, / In general, I am happy, that's all!”

The most popular 100% mystical light prayer in our hundred is the “Golden City”, which in the original by Anri Volokhonsky begins “above the blue sky”, and not “under the sky”, as we are used to. That is, this is the vision of Ezekiel and heavenly Jerusalem:

Surprisingly, among the most popular poems there is a certain amount of directly moralizing, like Kipling's "Commandments", although it seems that in modern poetry it is not customary to teach life so directly. But this is understandable: poetry in large, popular culture is not only high art, but also the rules of speech. They teach how to declare love, they are needed to sing in chorus, to feel unity at a concert or parade, and, of course, to learn the rules of life. It is difficult to imagine a European culture where, just like ours, Omar Khayyam is popular with his Sufi wisdom. You can even see what Russian poetic commandments look like if you write out one line from each verse, where there is a direct moralistic appeal. Pushkin is our everything. But it is absolutely clear that our everything and Yesenin. And if Pushkin is school poetry, then Yesenin is also folk poetry, songs are sung to his poems - both romances and chanson. He is everywhere and on the shelves of Soviet engineers, and as a guitar he disguises himself as folk and thieves music. “What are your favorite poems, songs (whether classical or modern). Name any line from each verse (song) ”- we asked RR readers to answer this question on Facebook and VKontakte. We received 744 detailed answers, the respondents recalled at least three lines of different works. This survey cannot be considered completely representative, but it has new knowledge compared to the massive survey that we publish on these pages. Our readers did not recall the most famous and popular poems and songs, but tried to talk about their favorite ones, they had time to think and write about not the most obvious lines. Therefore, it is probably not Pushkin who “wins” here, as in the mass poll, but Joseph Brodsky. This is more like a list of favorite poets not of the whole people, but of those who love to read poetry. This is not a national canon, but rather a more "fashionable", modern canon of the most reading part of the public. Joseph Brodsky leads by a huge margin, which is especially interesting because he was mentioned relatively rarely in the mass poll.

Using the data of a representative survey of the Sociological Service of the Superjob.ru portal, "RR" singled out the lists of the most popular songs separately among men and among women. As you can see from the lists, they are somewhat different. The songs that everyone likes almost equally are singled out: “Victory Day”, “We are waiting for changes” by Viktor Tsoi, “I don’t like it when half ...” by Vladimir Vysotsky and “Katyusha went ashore”. But then the preferences differ greatly. In second place in popularity among women is the amazing "Hope" to the music of Pakhmutova and Dobronravov's poems about separation and fate: "You just need to learn to wait, / You need to be calm and stubborn, / To sometimes receive from life / Mean telegrams of joy ..." . The second place of this song is actually the first: “Victory Day” was called by many because the poll was conducted in May, after the large-scale celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, so “Hope” is the main female song in Russia. And for men, for example, “I am free” falls into the top ten, about the ultimate will, about freedom from good and from evil, as well as from my beloved: “I will forget your voice, / And about that earthly love / That burned us to dust , / And I went crazy, / There is no more room for you in my soul! So in the Russian song canon, the man left to fight for metaphysical freedom, and the woman waits hopelessly and stubbornly.

Having combined the data on the age categories of the representative survey of the Sociological Service of the Superjob.ru portal, PP also found significant generational differences in the ratings of favorite songs. There is only one song in the top ten - "Victory Day". The main songwriter of the younger generations is Viktor Tsoi. In general, they are more fond of rock musicians: DDT, Kino, Aria, even one foreign performer, Sting, made it into the top ten, although most respondents believed that it was more about songs in Russian, because it was proposed to name the line of the song or a poetic work. For older generations, the main bard is still Vladimir Vysotsky, not Viktor Tsoi, and most of their favorite songs are Soviet.
