OCR online / Habr

I got acquainted with OCR technology somewhere in 1997, when I bought my first, then still manual, black-and-white scanner Genius ScanMate 256 (by the way, still working). The scanner was accompanied by the Direct OCR program on a 3-inch floppy disk (damn, all these names pop up from somewhere in the subconscious), which tried with all its might to prove that you can quickly and almost without errors enter the text from the book into the computer. Well, the evidence wasn't great. FineReader, which I met later, did it better. The topic of recognition interested me, I spent quite a lot of time on popular science articles about OCR technologies.

In 2001 I was preparing my thesis on web technologies. I thought for a long time about where to apply my knowledge. Since I was interested in OCR technology, I decided to combine WEB and text recognition. For the recognition itself, I had to be responsible for FineReader. With friends, we "disassembled" FineReader into separate DLLs and figured out how to call individual functions of these libraries, passing binary image data, and how to get back the recognized version of the text. Above all this, a simple web interface was built to upload pictures, start recognition and get the result.

The first limitation at that time for us was the ridiculous bandwidth of the Internet. An A4 page scanned at 200 dpi and saved in TIFF format (which was the only one accepted by the FineReader program) could take up several megabytes in gray tones, and if someone by mistake or unknowingly scans a color version, then the volume increased by three to four times . Such a huge file for those times was sent and processed with difficulty even over a local network, and through the public Internet it was generally a difficult task.

The second factor is cost. With this speed of transferring scanned page files, each page was expensive. We also took into account that hacked versions of OCR programs are usually used, which are available for free or for a penny.

The third factor is demand. In order for a person to start using an online text recognition service, at least three factors are needed: the presence of a scanner, the presence of the Internet, and the inability to independently recognize the text. It was hard to imagine a large number of such "crooked" and "stupid" users.

The project was implemented, but shelved as unpromising.

Two years ago, I suggested to my colleagues at work that they consider reimplementing the project. The situation has changed: the Internet has become faster (mp3 files have long been larger than a scanned page in JPG format), scanners are almost everywhere (and you can just take a picture of the text), users try not to load their heads with all sorts of programs and use online services. FineReader has an API, and FLASH allows you to make a fairly convenient web interface for managing loading and recognition. But we did not come to a common opinion and, one might say, missed the opportunity to make a useful and popular service that can be profitably sold to ABBYY or Google.

Now ABBYY has already implemented an online version of Fine Reader for text recognition (supports 6 languages, including Russian; understands documents written in several languages at once, supports input in TIFF formats (including multi-page files), JPEG, BMP, PNG, PCX, GIF, DjVu; supports Microsoft® Word, Excel®, Rich Text Format, TXT, searchable PDF output).
