Who was the first to applaud, or the right clap as a reward

A still from the film “The 5th Element”

Why do we clap our hands expressing positive emotions? When did the applause start? What is the right way to applaud? And what do the musicians themselves think about it?

Since ancient times, applause has been an integral part of human culture. Small children clap their hands to express their joy. In ethnic music, claps serve to maintain the rhythm.

An ancient Egyptian fresco dated to the middle of the second millennium BC, kept in the British Museum, depicts three girls: one of them plays a wind musical instrument, something like an oboe, the other two close and open their palms - they applaud.

Not only a theater or a concert hall, but also, let's say, scientific conferences and television talk shows are inconceivable without applause, an indispensable element of many daily rituals.

We decided to look back at the history of this phenomenon and explore “trends”.

From antiquity to the present day

The word “applause” comes from the Latin verb “plaudare” (“to clap your hands”). In antiquity, the function of this collective will was far from unambiguous. With their help, it was possible not only to reward with applause, but also, for example, to drive them off the stage.

Unable to bear the disordered reaction of the public, the ancient Roman Emperor Augustus introduced certain rules. The stadium was divided into sectors, in front of each of which was a special conductor. When he raised his hand and said the sacramental “Vos plaudite!” (“Clap!”), those sitting in front of him began to frantically clap their hands, shout, whistle and stomp - in a word, about the same as in today's sports competitions.

And Emperor Nero maintained five thousand professional “applauders”, who, before entering the “work”, underwent special training.

With the help of applause, the audience thanks the actors, singers, musicians for the pleasure. For a composer, applause was the measure of success.

The king of operetta Jacques Offenbach sat at the premiere of Orpheus in Hell with the score in his hands, marking individual passages and writing in the margins: “clap”, “clap loudly”, “clap and stomp their feet”. Then, the operetta, which had been tested in public, was finalized in accordance with the reaction of the audience.

Klaka yesterday and today

Of course, at all times there have been abuses associated with applause. As early as the third century BC, the Athenian playwright Menander, who was defeated in a competition of poets, reproachfully threw to his rival Philemon:

“And are you not ashamed of your victory?”

A group of hired flappers helped Philemon win.

Clackers - professional "killers" of theatrical premieres, or the reasons for the failure of famous performances

In a word, claque (from the French claque - “light clapping”) existed long before the word itself appeared.

This dubious form of audience self-organization peaked in the middle of the 19th century in Paris. Clack, which Balzac and Heine so picturesquely reflected in their works, consisted of professional clackers. Those, in turn, were divided into “clappers”, “mourners”, “laughers” and “shickers”.

Some of them performed solo, others were organized into troupes. Singers, singers and theater directors, as well as their fans and rivals, hired “clackers” to serve.

Few theaters today boast (or complain about) a clack: the Vienna and Munich Operas, the Bayreuth Festival and the major operas in Italy.

Ovations between parts of the composition?

“If you do not want to appear ignorant, then in no case try to applaud between the individual parts of the work”,

- say the rules of good manners. However, Mozart, and Beethoven, and Schubert, and Tchaikovsky would have turned out to be "ignoramuses" from the point of view of modern snobs: in their time, applause after individual parts and even individual solos were considered completely normal.

In addition, the “ban” on standing ovations between the parts of the work, which until quite recently was indisputable, is gradually being eroded. So, many musicians admit in interviews that they are not at all annoyed by spontaneous expressions of approval. And some - like, say, the cellist Sol Gabetta - even ask the listeners not to be shy and clap whenever their heart desires.

One big clack

Applause has been and remains the most correct form of reaction to a performance you like. Historians recall that only after concerts ceased to be the prerogative of the aristocracy and became available to the general burgher public, such forms of expression of listener emotions as whistling and exclamations of “Boo!!!” came into fashion.

It is true that in some countries (in particular, in the classical opera country like Italy, and today also in the USA and Germany), whistling is often a sign of approval. But still, whistling and stomping, as well as “beeping” should be done with caution.

By the way, the record for the duration of the standing ovation was set on German soil - however, at the performance of an Italian singer. On February 24, 1988, Luciano Pavarotti performed the role of Nemorino in Donizetti's Love Potion so beautifully on the stage of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin that the audience did not let him go for 67 minutes.
