The letter A makes the sound heard in the words apple, black and cat. This is the sound (short a) you would first introduce to a child. The letter A also makes the long a sound as heard in able, make, rain*, and day*. The letter A makes a variety of sounds. It is most commonly found using the short a sound; however, it also makes the following sounds:

• Schwa, e.g., about, comma and ago,
• AL Digraph, e.g., all, talk and call,
• AU Digraph, e.g., August, auto and because,
• AW Digraph, e. g., awful, lawn and draw,
• /air/ Vowel (AR and ARE spellings), e.g., vary, care and parent, and
• /ar/ Vowel (Bossy R), e.g., are, March and car.

* Vowel team rule (AI, AY, EA and OA): The vowel team rule states when two vowels go walking the first does the talking (says its name) and the second vowel is silent, e.g., brain, pray, beach and boat. There are a few exceptions to this rule. The combination of the vowels E and A also result in the short e sound, e.g. head, feather and heaven.

In some instances, the letter a can sound like the short o, e.g. watch.

There are children who, as soon as they start speaking, are already interested in letters, of course, if their parents offered them to study them and created a positive reinforcement for this event, that is, they were overjoyed when the child first began to show interest in letters.

There is an opinion that initially a child should master physical training, learn how to deftly control his body, that is, master climbing, crawling, walking on stairs - to develop large motor skills, as well as develop fine motor skills - movements with fingertips: modeling, drawing, sorting out small items. And only then can you teach letters. That is, by the age of 5-6 it will be just fine.

Based on my personal experience, I believe that everything should be done simultaneously and in parallel, following the desire and interest of the child. That is, you can start learning letters and show them even when the child is not even a year old. At 3-4 years old, a child should normally already have a fairly large vocabulary and keep up a conversation. Perhaps this period will be suitable for starting acquaintance with letters?

Many years ago, a phrase I heard from someone caught on in my memory that in Russian there is not a single word beginning with the letter "a", except for the words "maybe" and "string bag". Nowhere else have I seen such information, but the clue remains. Is it really so?

Firstly, you could find such information (subject to the following stipulation) in places, for example, in Leo Uspensky's "Tale of Words". Secondly, this is not entirely true. It would be correct to say that in Russian almost there are no actual Russian words beginning with A, with the exception of interjections, conjunctions and particles (initially yeshe and pronouns), as well as words formed from them. "Perhaps", and hence "string bag", can also be reduced to interjections, so in a sense, even they should not be singled out.
As for the reason, it is simple to the point of banality. The Russian language at an early stage of its independent existence avoided words beginning with a vowel sound. The initial A regularly changed into I, O into E and VO, U into VU (with less regularity), E into E. Only words beginning with I remained, although in closely related Ukrainian it also turned into YI.
