Content of the activity:

Letterpress printing is a method of polygraphic reproduction of text and drawings, in which the printing elements are located above the blanks, perceive the ink and transfer it to paper, cardboard, fabric. Books, magazines, newspapers, posters, engravings, posters, tickets are printed in this way on flat-bed and rotary presses. The printer prepares the machine, printing forms and material for printing, charges the feeder (a device that feeds sheets of paper into the machine). On a special metal table (taler) he arranges the strips of the form according to the layout of the publication, uses space material for lining individual parts (serves to form gaps between words, lines). Performs dressing (alignment of the component parts of the printing form in height) and registration (alignment of individual strips of the form horizontally and vertically), sets the form in the printing press. Prints editions from text typesetting, stereotyped and photopolymer forms without clichés, from forms containing line and raster clichés. Regulates ink and folders and leads the folding process (folding printed sheets of paper into notebooks, from which books are then obtained). Carries out a preliminary registration (alignment of the strips) of the form, receives a summary (the first print at the start of the circulation) and reconciliation (typographical proofreading). Checks the quality of prints, presses and packs the finished product.

Prepress

Layout and layout

Today it is hard even to believe that just twenty years ago, the original layouts of printed products were made almost or completely without the help of computers, the so-called "analogue" method.

Linotype line-moulding machine for analogue letterpress plate preparation.1908 year.

At present, digital preparation of layouts has completely replaced the analog one. Computers, specialized programs and digital equipment perform all the necessary operations: taking or digitizing photographs, creating illustrations, designing an original layout, typing, layout and page design.

The ubiquity and availability of digital technologies and the so-called NIS (desktop publishing systems) has changed the approach to the interaction between the customer and the contractor in the printing industry. Today, in two cases out of three, the original layout of printed products is completely or partially produced by the customer and on his equipment. This allows you to significantly reduce the time cycle of production and significantly reduces the financial costs of the customer.

Modern workstation for graphic design and layout.

However, the rules and restrictions that were in place decades ago have not disappeared in the digital age. Although desktop publishing systems provide a fantastic level of flexibility and variety of tools, and the degree of their automation and accessibility to the user is constantly increasing, the importance of close and continuous cooperation between the designer and the printer does not diminish. Moreover, with the advent of new features and the complexity of layouts, their interaction becomes one of the key success factors.

The customer, who undertakes the performance of a certain part of the work on the production of printed products, inevitably assumes a significant share of the responsibility that previously lay with the printing house. This means that the designer performing the layout must have a deep enough understanding of the printing technology, know the features and limitations of a particular process and take them into account when developing the layout.

Prepress

Under the prepress in the broadest sense of the word understand the whole range of activities carried out in the course of the execution of a printing order before placing it for printing on a printing machine. This may include: preparation of texts and illustrations; layout and layout; output of photoforms; production of printed forms.

More often, prepress is understood in a narrower sense: as the preparation of a completed and approved original layout for printing, taking into account the characteristics of the printing technology used and the production process of a particular printing house. Usually this is the final stage of work on the original layout, performed by the printing house.

In this case, the prepress includes the following works: checking the publication for compliance with the standards of the printing process; descent; installation of the publication; generating output files; test print output.

Reviewing a publication is a complex and responsible process that must be performed by experienced professionals. Without going into technical details, we will only say that there are a number of professional software applications that allow you to check the original publication in order to correct the errors found in the future.

Unfortunately, the variety of publishing systems, their versions and modifications, as well as the initial complexity of the publishing process, make it impossible to guarantee that 100% of the errors contained in the original layout will be found and corrected. Competent and scrupulous checking of source files, in principle, makes it possible to exclude problems that could potentially lead to a deliberate defect in printing, however, it is often impossible to avoid smaller problems. This is one of the reasons why the experience and professionalism of a designer are the most important factors for success.

Ready-made assembly of the layout with the necessary marks and scales.

Imposition refers to the arrangement of pages or other constituent elements of a publication, taking into account the characteristics of printing and post-press processing. Proper imposition not only ensures that the printed output is exactly as intended, but often leads to savings in materials and labor, and as a result, reduces the cost of production. Typically, impositions are made using custom software packages, such as Creo Preps, or extensions to publishing packages, such as Dynagram INPosition for QuarkXpress or Lowly Apprentice InBooklet for Adobe InDesign.

Closely related to the process of imposition is editing, which is understood as bringing the final file of the publication into exact compliance with the requirements of the printing process. As a rule, this means adding special elements to the layout, such as crop marks, registration marks, live control scales, etc. All these elements are necessary for printing or help to control the printing process.

Plate process

Photo output device.

An intermediate process in the course of preparing a printed product for printing is the manufacture of forms. This process can be either two-part (output of photoforms on a photodetector and subsequent production of printing plates) or one-part (output of printing plates on a CTP device). In both cases, an integral part of the process is rasterization, the transformation of a publication file prepared for output into a format understandable to the output device.

Rasterization is a complex process that requires significant computing resources and large amounts of memory, so it is performed on powerful computers by specialized programs called RIP (Raster Image Processor, image rasterization processes). For correct and fast rasterization, the source file must be converted into a certain format understood by the program. Today, this is usually a PostScript file or PDF.

Copy frame.

In the case of a two-component process (photoforms + printing forms), the resulting raster file is printed (more precisely, exposed) on a special roll film, which, after development, turns into photoforms. For this, equipment is used, which is called a "photo output device" (in English - imagesetter).

The second step in the two-part process is the exposure of the offset plates using photoforms in a device called a "frame". After developing the plates in a special processor, ready-made printing forms are obtained, suitable for installation in an offset printing machine.

In the case of a one-part process (output of printing plates on CTP), after the file is screened by the RIP program, in a device called CTP (short for Computer-To-Plate), not photographic film is exposed, but a special polymer, which, after development, is used as a finished printed form.

Photo output or CTP?

CTP device.

Today, undoubtedly, the most promising method for the production of printing plates is CTP. This method eliminates one step in the production process (plate making on the copier frame) and thus reduces the time required to prepare for printing.

However, CTP devices exist relatively recently, and, at present, they have not yet reached the stage of development when one could speak of the complete extinction of the two-component process. Today, the CTP process does not have any significant advantages in terms of the quality of the resulting prints over the photoprocess, and in some cases even inferior to it. In addition, CTP devices are very complex, and their overall reliability is still lower than that of photo output devices.

There is another important factor holding back the spread of CTP. Today, due to the high cost of consumables, the use of this method is economically justified only in certain types of printing industries, primarily in large-circulation (magazine) printing. When printing smaller runs and with a relatively small total production volume, the use of CTP is not yet fully economically justified.

There are several other factors why CTP loses to the photo process.

First of all, the implementation of CTP inevitably reduces the possibility of control at the output stage. Unlike photoforms, CTP forms are nearly impossible to visually inspect; they also cannot be proofed. Of course, other methods of control are applied, and nevertheless, the probability of error increases somewhat.

In addition, unlike photo plates, CTP plates are not stored after a print run and cannot be reused, which in some cases can be a serious problem.
