Dinosaur books for 2 year olds

10 of the Best Dinosaur Books for 2-Year-Olds

10 dinosaur books for 2-year-olds. Recommendations from a librarian and mom. Books that your 2-year-old who loves dinosaurs will love reading whether he/she wants to learn more about dinosaurs or just has fun reading about them.

My 2-year-old son shoved the same book at me again, begging me to read it for the fifth time in a row. I groaned, feeling torn. I didn’t want to say no because I want my son to love reading, but I just couldn’t go through this one with him again.

His love for dinosaurs had appeared seemly out of nowhere and I wasn’t prepared. We needed to get him some more dinosaur books fast.

I set out to find him some great ones that we both wouldn’t get tired of reading.

Even as a librarian, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought a book for either of my kids that was just unimpressive. It’s hard to know what’s going to be a hit and what’s going to sit on the shelf untouched. I definitely ended up with a few duds, but here are the great ones we’ve found.

I hope this list of dinosaur books for 2-year-olds helps you pick some great books for your dinosaur-loving son or daughter.

Li’l-Gen Dinosaurs Sound Book: Clever Creatures and Boundless Beasts — A Land of Dinosaurs*

Clever Creatures and Boundless Beasts

This is the book that started it all for us. The text may be a little complicated for a 2-year-old, but it has a button for each dinosaur that pronounces its name and the sound it made. My 2-year-old loved this! It was amazing how quickly he could properly pronounce the dinosaurs’ names and identify them based on their features.

As your child gets older, the story teaches them different features of each of the dinosaurs included. There are also versions available that come with dinosaur figurines. My son loves finding and setting the correct dinosaur on the page as I read.

Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-saur?: All About Dinosaurs (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library) by Bonnie Worth
Age RangePurposeExtra Features

Oh Say Can You Say Dinosaur?

This is another fun one that’s primary purpose is education. It’s a sort of encyclopedia for very young children. This one identifies a decent number of dinosaurs and describes them in a fun Dr. Seuss way.

The thing that I love about this one is that the dinosaur names are written out to help you pronounce them correctly. Each introduction starts with a phrase along the lines of, “Can you say…?” which causes your child to answer the question by repeating the name.

This has a few different dinosaurs that the Dinosaur’s Sound Book didn’t, so it helped my son learn about a few new dinosaurs.

Never Touch a Dinosaur!

Never Touch a Dinosaur!

This is a fun book. It rhymes and if your child has read the books above or knows a bit about dinosaurs, he/she will have fun trying to identify the dinosaurs in this one. It also has different textures to touch and feel. The graphics are great too.

This includes five different dinosaurs and is a nice quick read for those nights when you don’t have a lot of time but still want to spend some time reading as a part of a routine.

Little Dinosaur (10 Minutes to Bed) by Rhiannon Fielding

Ten Minutes to Bed Little Dinosaur

This is the most story-centered book on the list, which is a nice change of pace from educational and short board book types. It follows Rubble, a young Triceratops as he avoids bedtime by having adventures. It’s a great, fast-paced story that will hold your young child’s attention even at a young age.

This book doesn’t identify the types of dinosaurs and my son likes to ask me what each one is. If you’ve read the ones above that do identify the dinosaurs, it’s fun to speculate together what they may be.

Pop-up Dinosaurs: A Pop-Up Book to Get Your Jaws Into (Priddy Pop-Up)

Pop-up Dinosaurs

This book stands out for the pop-up feature. For a young children’s book, the graphics on the pop-ups are outstanding.

It also includes random dino facts and activities on each page so this is one your child can get a lot of use out of over time. You can engage him with the pages in different ways each time you read–read the story, do the activities, or identify the images.

Roar: A Dinosaur Tour by Michael Paul

Roar: A Dinosaur Tour

This book includes quite a few dinosaurs, which I was slightly overwhelmed by at first. But not my son! He very quickly started to pick up on the dinosaurs that he wasn’t familiar with, asking me what each new one was as we read, and adding each one to his arsenal of dinosaur knowledge.

The story is short and simple, but it goes through each of the included dinosaurs with colorful images. Quickly another favorite.

Dinosaurs: Touch and Explore

2-6Educational Touch & Feel; Lift-the-flap
Dinosaurs: Touch and Feel

This is one of the fun, interactive dinosaur books that I found to be great for 2-year-olds. It has a few different interactive elements for kids–like touch and feel, flaps to lift, and questions for a child to ponder for hours (or minutes) about the world of dinosaurs.

The Microraptor

One of the features that sold me on this book is the highlight of the Microraptor. My son loves the show, Dino Dana, which now has him continuously referring to the Microraptor as a nuisance in our home.

Besides that one feature, this is a unique book that he loves interacting with.

Night Night, Dino-Snores by Nicola Edwards

2-6Story & LullabyTouch & Feel
Night Night, Dino-Snores

This is a sweet bedtime story that includes stories about different dinosaurs with a texture to feel the dinosaurs’ skin. I have to admit the textures aren’t great, but my kids still love touching them.

The book has a nice, simple story about each type of dinosaur going to bed, so it makes for a good bedtime story. It has a cadence that keeps a young child’s attention and is an enjoyable read for everyone.

It is a little long and not clear enough of a story to hold the short attention spans of 2-year-olds, so you may have to cut down some parts.

It includes a few different dinosaurs that will be familiar from the previous books; as well as, a few new ones. It also names each dinosaur in the story.

Age RangePurposeExtra Features
2-5FunPuppet
Chomp Chomp Dino

This one makes my list because of the unique fact that it includes a puppet that your child can use to chomp alongside the dinosaur while you read.

There is a lot going on in the book and the dinosaurs aren’t labeled so it’s more for fun than learning about dinosaurs. But making reading fun is a key part of fostering a love of reading, so this still has a place in your child’s dinosaur library.

Dino Days with Triceratops

If your child happens to love the triceratops like my son does, this book is for you! It’s a simple book about the Triceratops dinosaur. It does include mentions of the T-Rex, Spinosaurus, and Velociraptor.

The book includes some good dinosaur facts and names of the dinosaurs in the story.

Those are the 10 best dinosaur books I’ve found for 2-year-olds. These books have helped foster my son’s love of dinosaurs and I’m sure they’ll do the same for your son or daughter. And you won’t be stuck reading the same book over and over.

I have found the best dinosaur books for toddlers - trust me! We've been putting together a big dinosaur theme for you, and the most important part is always the books. There are so many toddler dinosaur books, but some aren't so great. I've spent hours at my local library looking through them all and I've found my favorites. These are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers and some of these will go on to be favorite books I'm sure!

I love writing book list recommendations like my very popular 50 Great Books for Toddlers and my newer Audio Book Recommendations.  As a teacher I believe that if you can only do one activity with your child each day, make it reading. They will learn so much from a good book (even a bad book really) and it's the key to developing a love of reading. You'll notice that I try to link all of the activities on this site to a book and you can do that too. Even if you don't have the one we recommend, find a similar one.

Here are my favorite toddler dinosaur books. It's not a huge list, but I love each and every one of these!

Dinosaur Dance

This book is heaps of fun, and you may have seen me mention that we used this as the book to read with our dinosaur puppets activity too. This is a short, simple book that is perfect for this age group. You can read more about the book and buy it HERE on Amazon.

Stomp, Dinosaur, Stomp!

This is a great action book with lots of repetition and rhyme which this age group love! We read this book before doing our muddy dinosaur sensory bin.  You can get this book HERE on Amazon.

The Pop Up Dinosaurs Galore

I LOVE all of Giles Andreae books and Dinosaurs Galore was going to be on this list until I discovered there was a pop up version!! This book has all the great things you would expect in a book from this award winning author and it will definitely be one that is read over and over again as you child gets older. You can get this book HERE on Amazon.

That's not my dinosaur

You'll notice that almost all of my book lists feature a book from the 'That's not my . ... ' series. These books are adored by toddlers and because they are a sturdy board book they're perfect for the younger age groups. They love the touch and feel part of the books. You can get this one HERE on Amazon.

Dinosaurs

This book is a simple factual book  - perfect for toddlers and preschoolers and great to get a discussion started about dinosaurs. It's a best selling book in this category so definitely one to check out. You can get this book HERE on Amazon.

Rumble With the Dinosaurs

You know we can't have a toddler book list without one that makes noise. I'll let you make your own decision on these. Toddlers LOVE them, but parents not so much! It is a great book though! You can get this one HERE on Amazon.

Pop Up Dinosaurs

I've already mentioned that pop up books are always popular (better for slightly older toddlers who won't rip them!) and this is a great one. Each page has a fun little rhyme too so definitely add this one to your list! You can get Pop Up Dinosaurs HERE from Amazon.

I hope you've enjoyed this collection of the best dinosaur books for toddlers.

14 best books about dinosaurs for toddlers, preschoolers and more

The theme of dinosaurs has fascinated and attracted children for generations, so there are so many books about ancient dinosaurs that it is very easy to get confused when choosing. We have compiled a list of the most popular, most reliable and highest quality publications of recent years. Don't thank!

ENCYCLOPEDIA

1. “Children's Encyclopedia. Dinosaurs”, publishing house “Rosmen”

Let's start with publications that are so well established that they are reprinted again and again - for many years. These include, for example, the children's encyclopedia "Dinosaurs" - a bright colorful book with lively and very realistic pictures. Even a three-year-old will be happy to look at the illustrations in it, and the student will draw a lot of interesting information and facts.

2. Encyclopedia for kindergarten. Dinosaurs”, publishing house “Rosmen”

Another bestseller is the Dinosaurs edition of the Encyclopedia for Kindergarten series. Both children and adults love it for bright and reliable pictures - and for the simplicity of the information provided. You will see, soon even the most unpronounceable names of dinosaurs will be known by heart by the whole family.

3. Dinosaurs. The Illustrated Atlas, Michael Brett-Shuman

If not for the panorama book (which will be discussed below), the Illustrated Atlas would be the most impressive publication in our selection: large format, amazing illustrations, and even a full Dictionary of Dinosaurs with information about 140 (!) species. In addition, this book contains the results of the latest research and discoveries in the field of paleontology. In general, a huge beautiful and informative book for the most dedicated dinosaur lovers.

4. Encyclopedia of antiquities. Dinosaurs. Book-panorama”, Robert Sabuda

And here is the same book-panorama. Luxurious - let's not be afraid of this word - edition, a real work of art. On every page, in every pocket there is a surprise: the prickly back of an Ankylosaurus, the sharp horns of a Triceratops, or even the huge mouth of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. You can't put it down, the book is so captivating and unique. And information about dinosaurs in it is presented in a simple and accessible way. The perfect gift for a young paleontologist! Unless, of course, close your eyes to the cost.

5. “Such different dinosaurs. Encyclopedia in pictures”, Victoria Zatolokina, Maria Melik-Pashaeva, Tatyana Rudenko

An extremely cute encyclopedia about dinosaurs with a curious structure: in the first part, the child gets acquainted with prehistoric times with the help of funny cartoon stories, and in the second part, a more serious encyclopedic part - learns in detail and in detail about each of the types of dinosaurs separately. The book tells about the environment in which dinosaurs lived, and about their way of life, and about the very process of studying ancient reptiles.

BOOKS WITH WINDOWS

6. “Magic windows. Dinosaurs, Robins Publishing House

All kids love books with windows - so feel free to choose this format for your first acquaintance with ancient dinosaurs. For example, the book "Magic Windows" from the publishing house "Robins" - bright, colorful, with cheerful smiling dinosaurs, literally calling to make friends. At the same time, the book will tell about their lifestyle: where they lived, what they ate and how long they lived, as well as explain what fossils are and how they help scientists study dinosaurs.

7. Book with secrets. Discover the Mysteries of Dinosaurs, Robins

Also a bright book with windows, but suitable for older children: the images are more realistic here, and the information is more serious. The child will be able to study in detail the skeleton of a dinosaur, consider the fierce fights that took place in the world of lizards, and also find out about the origin of life in general. Behind each of the 65 flaps is a curious fact from the life of your favorite dinosaurs.

STICKERS, GAMES

8. Super stickers. Dinosaurs”, publishing house “Makhaon”

Well, what kind of children do not like stickers?! And if they are also on the theme of dinosaurs, then this is a double pleasure for the baby. Choose from a variety of albums with hundreds of colorful stickers and let your child create their own stories.

9. “Find and show. Dinosaurs”, Thierry Laval

The book from the most popular series “Find and show” is 5 spreads with a huge number of dinosaurs. Each panorama corresponds to a separate historical era, and the child's task is to find each of the dinosaurs depicted on a special valve. Believe me, this is an excellent training of attention and visual memory.

10. Dinosaurs. 4D Encyclopedia in Augmented Reality, Devar Publishing House

Not quite an ordinary - and maybe even quite unusual encyclopedia about dinosaurs. With its help, the child will be able to revive more than 30 different dinosaurs! After all, reading information about eating habits, size and weight with mom, looking at illustrations is one thing, but launching a moving triceratops with the help of a gadget, feeding it with fern leaves and even taking pictures with it is quite another. The perfect combination of learning and fun.

ARTISTIC

11. "Dinosaurs and other reptiles", Elena Kachur

We are just crazy about Chevostik - and we do not hide it. And no less reverently than audio stories, we love printed books with questions from the inquisitive Chevostik and detailed answers from the omniscient Uncle Kuzi. "Dinosaurs and other reptiles" is like a story book about adventures, but with a huge educational overtones. From the conversations of Chevostik and Uncle Kuzi, the child learns a lot not only about the formidable ancient lizards, but also about their descendants, which we can see today: about lizards, crocodiles, turtles. We strongly recommend for preschool and primary school age.

12. School of dinosaurs. Diplodocus Becomes a Hero”, Gemme Pierre

An excellent format for younger children: simple, but kind and instructive stories about little dinosaurs who study in an unusual dinosaur school. Pleasant illustrations, simple narrative language and a brief encyclopedic reference on a particular type of dinosaur - in each book in the series. Well, the names speak for themselves: “Deinosuchus forgot to brush his teeth”, “Stegosaurus celebrates a birthday”, “Brontosaurus is new in class”.

13. Magic book of dinosaurs. Jurassic Journey”, Anastasia Galkina

A wonderful series of children's preschool books about the adventures of the girl Rita and the boy Nikita - nothing less than that - in the prehistoric world! With the help of a magical book found in the attic, children travel to the distant past, to the Jurassic period, to meet cute brachiosaurs, allosaurs, and even a diplodocus baby there. A fascinating plot and the development of horizons - in one book.

14. Journey to the Dinosaurs by Gerald Durrell

Another great educational book about the adventures of children who traveled through time and found themselves in the world in the age of dinosaurs - but for an older audience. By the way, we note that Gerald Durrell is a world-famous naturalist writer, so there is no doubt about the reliability of the facts mentioned.

7 interesting and educational books for children: about chess, biology, mathematics and dinosaurs

that's new. Our selection of new cool books will suit both. They will help the first to get carried away with studies, and the second - to broaden their horizons and become even more curious.

1. The Secret Life of Sores by Tolosa Sistere Marion

Samokat Publishing House, 2021

small ones (medical journalist Daria Sargsyan was responsible for fact-checking here - so everything is serious and expert). Adults will also learn a lot from the book. At the end, all readers will be tested for attentiveness. Are you sure you will pass it?

2. “Do all mammals do this?” by Alla Belova

Samokat Publishing House, 2021

Another book reviewed and approved by journalist Daria Sargsyan. This funny and colorful edition brings together the latest scientific facts about breastfeeding. But they are presented in such a fascinating way that the child will not even notice how he learns a lot of interesting facts from the field of zoology, anatomy, and even from the history of evolution.

By the way, for parents, the book will be a great help in finding answers to a hundred "whys" of a child, especially if the family is expecting replenishment.

3.

“Mathematics. History of Ideas and Discoveries, Iosif Rybakov Walk to History Publishing House, 2018

Mathematics is not just a science, it is the language spoken by most of the technical and natural sciences. And to master this language is sometimes more important than a foreign one.

The book will tell the young scientist how mathematical knowledge developed from the Stone Age to the era of computer technology. The guys will understand why solve equations and build graphs, and they will also learn how all kinds of formulas were discovered and how people lived without them. Yes, yes, before, entire meetings of mathematicians were organized to solve “difficult” examples (the very ones that second-graders now click like nuts).

Bonus: the child will try to solve the mystery of the root of two and come up with ways to count.

4. "Chess for Toddlers", Cathy Danes

Rosman Publishing, 2021

If before "Modern Chess Openings" by Richard K. Griffith and John G. White, your young grandmaster has not yet matured, but Bat Harmon's laurels and do not give him rest, this book is what you need.

Colorful illustrations, an interactive form of presentation of material, simple (only at first glance) tips on attack and defense - all together this will definitely instill in a child a love for the most intelligent sport.

And yes, author Kathy Danes was taught to play chess by her son Joe Burks. And he, by the way, at the age of 9 won the British chess championship.

5. Primer, GN Yudin

Rosmen Publishing House

The book, whose authors ask not to read more than one letter a day, definitely arouses children's curiosity. How so?! Just one letter per day.

But each letter is a whole story. Somewhere instructive, somewhere funny, but always with unsurpassed illustrations and humor. An easy and relaxed way to introduce your child to the alphabet in a playful way.

By the way, this is a reissue of a book that became a classic 30 years ago. In 1983, The Primer was awarded a silver medal at the International Book Fair in Leipzig as the most beautiful children's book.

6. “The human body. Infographics, Brundle Harriet

Rosman Publishing House

Today's primary school and preschoolers are in no way inferior to the adult generation, which prefers the Instagram feed to long reads. And how would you order to supply young minds with useful information? In the form of visual content, of course. An encyclopedia about the human body, made in the format of infographics with 10-15 scientific facts on each spread, is the dream of any representative of clip thinking. Each time, leafing through the book, you can "grab" a new fact. And if the brain is already mature enough, then you can read everything and get systematic knowledge of human anatomy, which is in no way inferior to the biology program for 9th grade of secondary school.

7. “Tales about technology. Series: Scientific fairy tales, Evgeny Permyak

Avanta Publishing House, 2020

If a child does not get bright infographics with a million entertaining facts, he can read scientific fairy tales, where all the same information is given in a more understandable, fabulous form.

From this book you can learn about how people invented the stove, get acquainted with the love story of fire and water (in life you won’t guess what kind of hero they had), and find out everything about the construction of the samovar.

Grandmothers will especially like the book, since the stories here are written according to all the canons of fairy tale construction - with a large number of old words that are unusual for hearing (it will be possible to explain their meaning to the child, and this will become a topic for a separate conversation), and other small details in the text that refer to Russian folk tales.

8. “Adventures in the world of dinosaurs. Series: scientific fairy tales, Daria Multanovskaya

Avanta Publishing House, 2021

Do you remember that all preschoolers are delighted with dinosaurs? True, not everyone is ready to study them from encyclopedias. Some are limited to role-playing games with figures. This can be easily corrected.
