How can I enhance my social skills?

1. Improve your emotional intelligence

Put yourself in their shoes. Imagine what they might be going through and try to understand their feelings. You’ll better understand their perspective, which will help you respond appropriately. 

2. Look inwards

Pay attention to your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and triggers. Then it will be easier to control them while interacting with others.

3. Practice effective communication skills

A lot of people with anxiety or ADHD have a hard time connecting with others. Introverts or very shy people may also struggle. 

Here are some signs that you don't have great social skills:

  • You scroll on your phone while people talk to you. Smartphones are great at keeping us connected, but often to the detriment of those right in front of us. It puts a physical barrier between you and the other person at best. This communicates non-receptiveness to their words, and at worst, you seem bored, uninterested, and rude.
  • You never take off your headphones. Sure, you might pause the music while someone talks to you. But they don’t know that. Take out your earbuds to show that you’re listening. 
  • You never do anything in person. These days, you can order just about anything to your door. But while this is wildly convenient, it cuts you off from the outside world. Don’t let yourself become socially isolated.
  • You force humor when it might not be appropriate. You may want to defuse your anxiety with humor, but it’s not always the best time. Learn to read the room and only use jokes when it makes sense.

There is currently a process in Russia formation of a new education system focused on socialization of the individual on the basis of participation in a socially significant activities. So, in the Strategy of the state youth policy the priority is to involve youth in social practice , in order to develop its potential in the interests of the state.

One of the effective ways to include young generation into social life is social design.

Under social engineering in the field education and youth policy usually understand the specific technology, which is a constructive, creative activity, the essence of which is the analysis of problems and identifying the causes of their occurrence, in developing goals and objectives, characterizing the desired state of the object, and the development of ways and means of achieving the set goals [6]. So the social design is a technology of social education in educational institutions. Application of this technology was considered by S.M. Azarkina, G.M. Bespalova, N.M. Vinogradova, T.I. Kobeleva, A.A. Kochyan, A.V. Kochyan, V.A. Lukova, O.N. Malova, I'M IN. Minevich and others

G.M. Bespalova and N.M. Vinogradov determine the social design as a type of social interaction, during which teenager receives and assimilates information about social objects and phenomena, acquires and realizes the experience of his social interactions [14].

Social design is a complex systemic formation and consists of elements: social trial, social practice and social project. All elements of social design can exist both as complementary and as independent final activities depending on the goals. So Thus, in pedagogical science, the concept of "social practice" correlates with the concept of social design. This connection justified by the fact that social practice is a component social design.

Note that in the pedagogical dictionaries [1; 3; eight; ten; 11 and others], published in the last decade, there was no educational term "social practice" fixed. If one adheres to the view that social design as a field of scientific research appeared in the second half of the 20th century [12], then this fact is quite logical. The foregoing suggests that "social practice” is a relatively new pedagogical concept.

The concept of "social practice" in Pedagogy penetrated from sociological science. In sociology in context of various approaches to the study of the concept, goals, objectives and the structure of social practice N.L. Antonova, P. Bourdieu, E. Giddens, IN AND. Dobrenkov, T.I. Zaslavskaya, A.I. Kravchenko, Yu.M. Reznik, M.A. Shabanova and others.

In the socio-philosophical sense, social practice, first of all, is considered as the activity of the subject, aimed at transforming its social environment for a full-fledged development of the subject in this environment.

In free sources, there are various meanings of the concept "social practice". For example, social practices are understood as: 1) a set of culturally accepted (traditional) ways of activity, skills of handling various objects; 2) thinking or acting out of habit, following a rule, behavior that has a ritual character; 3) private social institutes [7]. A More Specific Definition of Social Practice cited in the free encyclopedia Wikipedia. In this encyclopedia social practice is defined as "a kind of practice in the course of which a concrete historical subject, using public institutions, organizations and institutions, affects the system social relations, changes society and develops itself" [12].

Some authors note that social practice can be understood in broad and narrow senses. Under social practice in a broad sense usually understand situation in which a person receives social experience. For a clearer understanding of the content of the concept "social practice" it is advisable to refer to consideration of definitions from the positions of different authors.

Describing the technology of social design, S.M. Azarkina, G.M. Bespalova, N.M. Vinogradov define social practice as process development, development of social skills, as well as knowledge of the non-external, internal, hidden essence of social reality [14, p. 29]. If the social test, according to authors, is the simplest component of the social design, in which the pupil receives and assigns information about social objects and phenomena, receives and realizes the experience its social interaction, then the social project is the most a complex type of social design involving the implementation new, not previously existing, at least in the immediate environment, socially significant product. Social practice takes central to social engineering.

N.F. Loginov and S.Kh. Samsonov is understood as social practice view activities high school students aimed at acquiring positive social experience in which he gains skills social competence and real action in society [4]. M.P. Guryanova, on the contrary, considers social practice as public benefit activities aimed at solving any social problem [5].

N.Yu. Perevoznikova, describing social practice as a technology implementation of competence-based education in school, understands it as active civic action children and adolescents, at the same time which are both educational forms and civil actions [9].

So, the analysis of scientific and educational literature allowed identify the following meanings of the concept of "social practice" in pedagogical science:

  1. situation - a set of circumstances conditions that create social relations;

  2. activity is a form of social activity;

  3. process - a specific sequence of actions that carry transformative social character;

  4. function - a type of activity aimed at acquiring positive social experience, to acquire social skills competence and real action in society, etc.

Fundamental difference between the considered definitions is in the keyword - "situation", activity, process, function etc. What is common is a clear transformative, socially significant the nature of social practice that reflects the social human interaction.

Social practices can be of different types. This was also noticed by E. Giddens, believing that "in the course of socialization, repetition by individuals of social practices, which makes them possible typification and scientific analysis” [2]. M.P. Gurianova distinguishes socio-pedagogical, social, social, medical, socio-cultural, social and labor social practices.

Our study proposes to consider social practice as a means of preparing students pedagogical universities to professional and pedagogical activity. Based on the position of S.M. Azarkina, G.M. Bespalova, N.M. Vinogradova that all elements of social design can to exist as completed activities, gives us the basis consider social practice as an independent final activity. Sharing the point of view of M.P. Gurianova to definition social practice as an activity, as well as the ideas of E. Giddens about social system as a reproducible social practice that inherent in organized social interaction, we have come to the next definition. Social practice, in the context of our research, means a socially significant activity aimed at on solving social problems in order to gain experience of social interactions.

Use of social practice as a component social design introduced in a number of educational institutions. So, A.N. Zharova and G.D. Chamovsky examples of use social practice in the classroom in elementary school. Authors N.A. Krivopalova, N.F. Loginova, N.Yu. Perevoznikova, S.Kh. Samsonova, N.N. Ushakova and others developed a number of methods for organizing social practitioner for both teenage and high school age. Considering social practice in the preparation of students pedagogical universities, we highlight especially significant works that describe application of social practice in higher education. So, for example, O.N. Malova studied the issue of the formation of civic competence university students by means of social design. G.N. Kudashov and O.V. Ogorodnova give an example of the organization of social practice student youth. V.A. Lukov and Ya.V. Minevich described application of social design technology for development social skills of students.

According to researchers, the involvement of students in social practice allows you to solve significant in modern conditions tasks, such as the formation and development of the competence of social interaction, social competence in general.

At the same time, many authors believe that the social practice can be useful in solving a number of other problems. As For example, we note that social design helps to solve to a teenager, the main tasks of adolescence are the formation your self-concept and worldview; establishing new ways social interaction with the adult world (S.M. Azarkina, G.M. Bespalova, N. M. Vinogradov).

Experience in conducting social practice in the middle classes N.Yu. Perevoznikova confirms that social practice creates conditions for a conscious choice of individual educational trajectories students, the formation of unique acts of action, such as "responsibility", "decision", "choice", "understanding". Social practice also contributes professional self-determination of high school students. Many authors focus on the formation of ideas about future work, choice places of study after school, acquaintance with the level of requirements and the specifics of learning in the organization of social practice in senior classes. To solve problems of this type, relevant, according to M.P. Guryanova, is a social and professional practice. The the author separates the concepts of "social practice" and "socio-professional practice". Under “socio-professional practice” means socially useful, labor activity aimed at ensuring professional orientation of students and their adaptation to labor collective. However, most scientists do not clearly boundaries between the mentioned types of practices and, as a rule, they are called social. N.F. Loginov and S.Kh. Samsonova note that the social practice contributes to the formation of a civic position and personal growth of high school students. Scientists emphasize that the introduction and development such a form of work of students of pedagogical universities as social practice objectively creates favorable conditions for A variety of goals that are relevant in modern conditions have been achieved: stimulation of social, creative, educational and research activity; creating conditions for increasing prestige of the teaching profession and its specializations in student environment; creation of favorable starting conditions for personal, professional and social advancement of students and others
