Down in the big construction site, the tough trucks work with all their might to build a building, make a road, to get the job done—load by load! The sun has set; the work is done. It’s time for trucks to end their fun. So one by one they’ll go to bed to yawn and rest their sleepy heads, then wake up to another day of rough-and-tough construction play! Working hard to help his team, Crane Truck raises one last beam. Reaching, stretching, lifting high, he swings the beam into the sky. He’ll set it down right on its mark, then off to bed; it’s almost dark. He slowly folds his boom back in, and then with one last sleepy grin, he tucks himself in nice and tight . . .Sigh! . . . then cuddles up and says goodnight. Shh. Goodnight, Crane Truck, goodnight. Spinning, churning, all day long, Cement Mixer sings his whirly song. Now . . . yawn! He’s weary and so dizzy from the fun that keeps him busy. With one last spin, he pours the load. He’s ready now to leave the road. He takes a bath, gets shiny bright, pulls up his chute, turns off his light. He cuts his engine, slows his drum, and dreams sweet dreams of twirly fun. Shh. Goodnight, Cement Mixer, goodnight. Dump Truck loves to work and haul. He carries loads both big and small. He moves the dirt from place to place, then dumps it with a happy face. One final load spills on the heap. Crrrunch! Now Dump Truck’s tired and wants to sleep. He lowers his bed, locks his gate, rests his wheels; it’s getting late. He dims his lights, then shuts his doors, and soon his engine slows to snores. “Hey! Pipe down!” Shh. Goodnight, Dump Truck, goodnight. Pushing with his mighty blade, Bulldozer works to smooth the grade. He clears the way to level ground and fills the air with thunderous sound. Rooaaar! No one’s as tough and strong as he! But now he’s sleepy as can be. He puffs some smoke out of his stack, turns off his engine, stops his track. He curls into his soft dirt bed and dreams of busy days ahead. Shh. Goodnight, Bulldozer, goodnight. Scooping gravel, dirt, and sand, Excavator shapes the land. He digs and lifts throughout the day. Arr! But now it’s time to end his play. A few more holes to dig and soon, he’ll roll to bed beneath the moon. Yawn! He twirls upon his bumpy track, pulls up his boom, stretches his back. He sets his scoop down on the ground and snuggles up without a sound. Shh. Goodnight, Excavator, goodnight. These big, big trucks, so tough and loud, they work so hard, so rough and proud. Tomorrow is another day, another chance to work and play. Turn off your engines, stop your tracks, relax your wheels, your stacks, and backs. No more huffing and puffing, team. It’s time to rest your heads and dream. Construction site, all tucked in tight. The day is done; turn off the light. Great work today. Now, shh, goodnight.

From the Publisher“Muslims called Piggy a pig and demanded to ban”: How the program “Good night, kids” was created KP" tells what difficulties the favorite heroes had and how they live now
The heroes of their favorite program have been living on TV screens for more than half a century
"Tired toys are sleeping, books are sleeping, blankets and pillows are waiting for the guys" at least a hundred people who do not know this simple song by heart. Under it, more than one generation of boys and girls prepared for bed, starting from the age of 1964 years old. It was then, on September 1, that the program “Good night, kids!” first appeared on the screens, which this year celebrates its 58th anniversary. On the occasion of the birthday of the KP-Petersburg program, I talked with its hosts from different times. We tell why Piggy became the main "outcast" for the audience, how all the puppeteers fit under one table, and why now the show has lost its former popularity among children.
ONE "UNCLE" YES "AUNT"
It just so happened that everyone who found himself in a comfortable chair of the host in the program "Good night, kids" immediately became "uncles" or "aunts". In the early 2000s, the St. Petersburg actor Viktor Bychkov followed a good tradition. Previously, the artist played Kuzmich from Peculiarities of the National Hunt. But then, unexpectedly for viewers, he turned into a kind Uncle Vitya.
It was not so easy to become Uncle Vitya
- My appearance in the program was not cloudless. Some people smiled sarcastically: “Why, they say, called Kuzmich? Will he pour Khryusha and Stepashka?" I am a professional actor and I hoped that if I had good stories, I could create a memorable and convincing image of Uncle Vitya,” Viktor Bychkov told KP-Petersburg.
His wife helped him create the image, who at that time worked as a screenwriter in "Spokushki" - this is how the creators affectionately call the program. It was thanks to Polina Belinskaya that Uncle Viti's famous suspenders appeared in the costume.
- At that time we were engaged in the improvement of a new apartment, the creation of a children's room for the baby - we watched a lot of programs, magazines, visited construction exhibitions. There I saw suspenders that looked like a giant centimeter. They decorated the stand. It was definitely necessary for Uncle Vitya! - recalls Polina Belinskaya.
The children's program, which was once conceived as a kind of "puppet show for TV", has turned into a real storehouse of knowledge. Only there are no comrades for the taste and color, so even a harmless show at one time had ill-wishers. Soviet parents were worried that for those 10-15 minutes before going to bed that graduation was underway, children simply could not be torn off the screens.
Scenarios for Viktor Bychkov were written by his wife Polina
- Nowadays, it's just ridiculous, now children are fed from infancy while they watch a tablet, - says Viktor Bychkov.
WHO LEFT THE PIG TO THE TABLE?
Claims, according to rumors, poured in the direction of Piggy - the most mischievous hero. Someone did not like that the doll did not blink, and Muslims even complained that a pig suddenly appeared in the frame!
- This probably concerns more Soviet times. Now everyone loves Piggy very much, they always meet with joy. We went to Chechnya with him somehow, all the children were delighted, - Khryusha's mother, puppeteer Oksana Chabanyuk, told KP-Petersburg.
Of the famous four, Piggy is the youngest hero, but he, it turns out, is already an old man. This year the hero turns 51 years old! In "Calm", if you look closely, all the "long-livers".
- The kind hare Stepashka has been speaking in the voice of the lovely Natalya Golubentseva since 1971. Her intelligent husband said that when meeting with representatives of the traffic police, he somehow showed a general photo and said: “I am Stepashka’s husband.” He was mercifully released, - Victor Bychkov laughs. - I myself always joked that I dreamed that I would be an old Grandfather Vitya, I would go to the cafeteria to drink tea, and the saleswoman would say to me: “Uncle Vitya, I remember you.” You look, furtively give me sugar for tea or candy. Sometimes it happens, it's very nice!
Sometimes, in order to educate fans, artists have to “abuse their working positions”. Oksana Chabanyuk, whose voice Khryusha has been speaking on TV screens for 20 years, occasionally acts as a child psychologist.
Oksana Chabanyuk (on the right) has been considered Khryusha's mother for 20 years already. If the child does not want to obey, then Piggy calls him and tells him how to cope with his parents. In response, children often begin to complain to their beloved hero about the “naughty” family, Oksana shares.
NO MONEY, NO JOB
Faith in the heroes of "Good night, kids" over these 58 years has become the same as faith in the good Santa Claus. Artists and creators have to support it not only during filming, but also outside of it.
- I was paid very little, Polina and I and our child could hardly make ends meet, - Viktor Bychkov recalls. “Besides, I didn’t star in projects that could go against my image as a presenter. I am a character actor, but I had to give up negative roles that could destroy the kids' faith in Uncle Vitya. On the same channel where "Calm" was on, I was offered the role of a villain in a series with a gigantic number of episodes for Russia. Bumping into him on TV, Polina sighed jokingly and said: “This is our summer house, but this is a new car.”
It would be strange, to put it mildly, to see how, after “Good night, little ones,” good-natured Uncle Vitya goes to scatter corpses around the city. But at that time, the puppeteers also had their own difficulties, although they remained behind the scenes - until the end of the 90s they had to crawl under the table during the entire filming process. Over time, the site, of course, was modernized.

- When I was there, there was already a podium, under which puppets led by actors peered out through a special hole. The first performer of Piggy was the legendary Natalia Derzhavina. Colleagues recalled that it was very uncomfortable for the actress to crawl under the table, says Bychkov.
“WE CALL OUR HEROES CHILDREN”
Despite all the difficulties, the artists adore their work. The transfer allows them not only to give childhood to someone, but also to prolong their own.
- When you are in character for a long time, you merge a little with your hero. On the site, we are all like little children, it is impossible to grow old here, - Oksana Chabanyuk says with a smile in her voice. - Yes, and we call our heroes children. When I do not see Piggy for a long time, then, of course, I start to get bored.
The artists say that the show brings them back to their childhood Photo: Vladimir VELENGURIN
All the dolls exist in a single copy and are kept at the studio along with their costumes, but at home their “mothers” are decorated with common photographs and small figurines.
- Making a television puppet is much more difficult than a theater puppet. In the frame, they are captured in close-up - you can see any flaw, so the quality is above all. They say that we change them every three years, but this is not true, they have not been doing this for a long time. All of them are unique, - says Oksana.
New episodes of the program are still being filmed. Khryusha, Stepashka, Filya and Karkusha worked even during quarantine, but have their former glory remained with them now?
- No, children's television should be invested and invested. All the innovations that the transmission management tried to bring with the advent of new characters were doomed to failure. It seems that they were aimed at increasing budgets, and not at maintaining the popularity of the program. The amount of advertising was constantly increasing, - concludes Bychkov.
Homes of those involved in the creation of the program are decorated with reminders of it
However, in recent years, many famous artists have been involved in the program, and the scale of the life of its heroes has only increased with the advent of new "offshoots" of the program, such as "Good morning, kids."
- There is so much fuss in Moscow or St. Petersburg that people are not up to "Calm". But you have no idea how popular they are in the regions. There we are always greeted with such joy and gratitude. It's all about the families themselves, where grandmothers, mothers grew up on us, and now the children themselves are growing up, Oksana assures.
