How to make letters with your body

Active Alphabet Activity - How Wee Learn

My boys sure love to move…can anyone relate? If so, you will love this active alphabet activity! Not only is it full of alphabet learning and perfect for preschoolers, it lets little ones use their whole body to learn about letter formation! That is such a powerful thing.

When our children use their bodies to make letters, they are creating fantastic body awareness as they use their body to make each shape in the letter. This is good for all and especially helpful for our little kinesthetic learners.

Why This Activity Matters

When children finally learn to make their names, there is something about that intense connection to their name that brings such a powerful feeling of pride for them. Our littles may not yet be developmentally ready to write all the letters with a pencil or other writing tool.

Children can still be building the fine motor strength and ability to draw the required types of lines to do this until six or seven years old. That said, there are other super fun ways our children can learn the alphabet and their names! Check out this active alphabet activity to see what I mean.

My active and creative boys had so much fun with this. You can use it at any level of learning. It can be used to support learning letters, names, and sight words.

What We Did

First, we wrote down the letters of their names, so we could look at the shapes of them. Then we had fun exploring different ways to make each letter shape. We made this a fun challenge as we shared ideas, encouraged each other and worked as a team. We all had so much fun with this alphabet activity.

A Turn in the Spotlight

Once we explored making the shapes of the letters, each of my boys took turns making the letters of their names.

They really enjoyed having their own performance time or turn in the spotlight. They started forming their body letters after, “Lights! Camera! Action!” was cheered by the crowd (my other son and I). The performance ended with a very proud and silly bow.

It is so adorable to see their pride as they perform. The audience (my other son and I) said the letters as my younger son made his name. We took pictures of each letter, so he could see his name when he looked at the photos of his alphabet activity. Oh, how I love that look of pride in what he has accomplished!

 An Important Extension

A super amazing extension you can do with this active alphabet activity is to print the photos, put them in order in a frame and hang them in your child’s bedroom. How special would that be? How proud would your child be to have their name made with their own body hanging on their wall. I know my boys would look proudly, and often, at their masterpiece!

This alphabet activity is a great way to remember the shape of their name! What a great keepsake for mama, too!

Happy moving!

*Mini Class video is at the end of this post.*

Do you sometimes find your child not knowing what to do with her/his energy and just starting to run around the house?

It’s good to have physical exercise time everyday, however, that is not always easy, right? It’s not always possible to go for a walk or go to the park to play. I’m a person who forgets about the importance of physical movement or exercise all the time.😐 If you are like me (🤭), save today’s activity in your folder – or wherever you put things to remember – because this activity can give a little time for your child to move her/his body and help focusing on things again. It’s a brain break for young children.😉

MATERIALS

  • Alphabet Affirmation cards
  • Game template
  • Small object to use it as a marker
Alphabet Affirmation Cards
Letter With Body Game Template
Letter With Body Game Template

HOW TO

  1. Choose a game template (Peach/Blue)
  2. Choose a word from the template
  3. Person #1 (who can read): Take the letters of the word from the Alphabet Affirmation cards set.
  4. Person #2 (child who is learning letters): Get ready to answer the questions and get to the castle.

EXAMPLE

(for the word “GREAT” on the Peach Game Template)

Person #1: Take the first letter card (letter G) and say “what’s the first letter of “GREAT”?” And make the letter G sound for your child to connect the sound and letter.

(🤦‍♀️I made a mistake here. Somehow I thought the word for letter G on the Alphabet Affirmation cards was “GREAT”, not “GRATEFUL”. 🤦‍♀️😓😓) When you do a game for the word “GREAT”, don’t show the card after your child’s guess because the card doesn’t say the right answer “GREAT”. Sorry about my mistake.)

Person #2 (child): Guess the first letter of “GREAT”. Say the name of the letter and make the letter with her/his body.

Making Letter G with Body

Person #1: When your child gets the answer, you can give the letter G card to her/him, and the child can move to the next gate. Move the marker to the next gate.

Person #1: Take the second letter card (letter R) and say “what’s the first letter of “RESPECT”?” And make the letter R sound.

Person #2: Guess the first letter of “RESPECT”. Say the name of the letter and make the letter with her/his body.

Making Letter R with Body

Repeat this process until your child finishes guessing all the letters of the word.

Making Letter E with Body
Making Letter A with Body
Making Letter T with Body

You can do it again with another word on the game template.

👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️

You can do this game as a brain break before a focus time or just as a fun movement activity by itself. Being able to move during the activity can help children stay longer on the activity.

You can make the alphabet learning more fun through this letter making game. Get the Alphabet Affirmation cards from Everyday Funday, go through the cards often, and when your child starts to pick up the sound of letters, try this game! 👍

Happy learning and quality time!
