daily on the Internet and beyond, we are faced text. These are social media feeds, articles, news, entertainment sites about all interesting events, and books. At normal reading speed, it is very difficult to reread everything we can find, so we either spend many hours on it, or we abandon this undertaking in favor of other activities. However, many directions of written text can be read using the technique of speed reading. This applies primarily to the same news and some abstracts, auxiliary works, where most often it is important to simply capture the main essence. Everyone can develop the skill of speed reading, but for this he will need perseverance and daily training. A useful tool in this lesson will be special programs, the most effective of which we will discuss in this article.

Sprutz

The first on the list was a well-known program (the Russian analogue of the original Spritz program) among all those who are trying to comprehend the art of speed reading. It especially lies in the fact that it is not just a shell for text played at high speed, but uses ORP technology - Optimal Recognition Point (optimal recognition point) as the basis of its work. Therefore, in order to understand the principle of teaching fast reading in this way, it is first recommended to learn more about this technology and its difference from the main RSVP technology used - Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (rapid sequential visual presentation), deciding for yourself whether it is right for you. In short, RSVP keeps moving the eyes, and that's what takes the most time, and ORP suggests focusing on the middle of the word, or more specifically, on the letter that is highlighted in red inside it. That is, its essence lies in training the brain to recognize a word with the help of this red letter in the center of it, which is optimal for recognizing the word itself and understanding its meaning and context. Despite the apparent complexity, the whole process happens unconsciously for you, the main thing when training in this way is to relax and not try to approach the process with all seriousness.

Once you learn one speed, you can increase it over and over again using the drop-down menu with options. Start with small numbers and gradually increase the rate, for example, by 50 words per minute. The program already has the optimal font for reading by default: this is an equally important characteristic and a component of fast reading, although at first glance it may seem that little depends on this parameter. This software is free and available for download from the official website. Despite the fact that for some reason a mobile application is drawn at the top of the page, the program is downloaded for a computer as an EXE file with a separate text file of the book as an example. The software itself has instructions on how to download books / reading materials: expand its additional window by clicking on the button -- and reading the introductory text and/or running it for quick reading. AceReader It is based on two technologies: RSVP, which we have already mentioned above, and TSP (tachistoscope scroll presentation).

  • In RSVP mode, the highlighted text is displayed in the center area of the entire text. This allows the eyes to move less, hence speeding up the reading process.
  • TSP helps you concentrate better while reading while keeping your eyes moving as usual. This method only allows you to increase the speed of reading, that is, to reach an intermediate level between standard reading and speed reading.

Based on your basic reading speed abilities, the process will adapt to the conditions, making the approach to learning individual. You can use any text for training by pasting it from the clipboard or uploading a text file in HTML, PDF, DOC, etc.

By practicing with AceReader on a regular basis, you can get rid of two bad habits that slow down your reading speed. Namely: the pronunciation in the mind of the words read, returning back for re-reading. By increasing the speed of displaying the text, you simply will not physically be able to manage to combine reading and reproducing words in your head or trying to read the previous text, and you will be forced to “read ahead”. Additionally, using this software, you can speed up the fixation time of your eye (the time that the eye spends focusing on one point), expand the fixation zone (the area that falls into the field of view when fixing on one point), increase the speed of re-fixation (the ability to quickly move eye). The software is paid, looks rather outdated, does not have a Russian interface language, but for those who are ready to put up with this, it is proposed to try a demo version that allows you to understand whether it is worth using the software in question or not.

Best Reader

This is a program that promises to improve reading speed in 10-15 days, subject to daily practice for 1-2 hours. The training is divided into 11 lessons, during which both reading speed and peripheral vision are controlled. The user will need to complete tasks, according to the results of which he remains in the same lesson for re-passing or moves to a new level. Testing for the assimilation of the lesson takes the form of a test with questions on the text that he has read. There are two exercises for training peripheral vision: "Visual width test" and "Reading Schulte charts" . There are a total of 86 exercises in Best Reader and an unlimited number of the two tests just mentioned.

In normal reading mode, the user can upload their own text files in TXT and RTF to practice with them. Nevertheless, to consolidate the software author recommends repeating the course. If you don't like the default font size, you can change it. Additionally, you can set its size, reading speed, text column width, text alignment in the column and the width of the field of view. The software is completely Russified, shareware and one day is given for its testing. After that, the software must be registered. A nice addition is the developer's informative website, where you can find useful information on teaching speed reading.

PerfectBrain

Multifunctional software that develops speed reading as well. Since this is a complex simulator, in addition to this skill, you can also improve memory, attention, and intelligence. We will not dwell on this, delving into the story of the possibilities for improving the speed of reading. To do this, the program has an oval or rectangular (your choice) working field that imitates the natural scope of a person's vision, where the text will be located. As a result of such actions, short-term memory improves and the field of vision expands.

For training, the program has 5 methods that improve skills, but nothing prevents the user from coming up with their own variations of lessons and practicing from them. In addition to this, it is proposed to take advantage of training that expands the field of view by concentrating on the central point and peripheral vision covering all the elements on the field. The authors argue that this method is more effective than the Schulte method, and whether this is actually the case, each user must decide for himself. We will not describe the rest of the features, you can read about them on the official website of the program. The software itself has a free demo period, Russified convenient and modern interface, which is a pleasure to use.

SPEED READING

This application is not suitable for all users, but only for owners of Windows 8 and 10, since it is installed through the Microsoft Store, which is available only in these versions of the OS. It is done again in the form of exercises, for the implementation of each of which (there are 12 in total) you get a point. To assess the effectiveness of classes, the program has 18 built-in tests that allow you to check the level of reading and the memorability of the text you read. Unlike many similar programs, the exercises here are quite non-standard, as in PerfectBrain. If everywhere you are invited to simply read the accelerated text, there are additionally various mini-games that complement the quality of learning.

Of course, there is also a traditional reading of the text with adjustment of the speed of its display. The entire learning process is formed into detailed statistics with a schedule and grades for different actions. The use of the software is recommended, as usual, in situations where a person notices that he is pronouncing mentally read words, forgets what he is reading, returns to what he has already read and is easily distracted from the process. The interface of the program is modern, fully Russified and there is a free trial version.

This article has reviewed the main available programs that allow you to learn the technique of speed reading. You can find a few more options on the Internet (mostly very old ones), but we did not include them in the selection for one reason or another, considering them uncompetitive. Do not forget that the acquired skill requires constant reinforcement, so the selected software should be used periodically, and it is also important to read any literature in this way as often as possible.

Read speed test. Online simulator for developing reading speed and awareness skills in 2021!

Reading speed is an important indicator not only for schoolchildren, who regularly check it. It is very important for an adult in the modern world to be able to navigate in huge flows of information. A reading speed test will help you determine your current level and see if you need to work on improving this skill or if you are reading fluently enough.

How to check reading speed?

The easiest way is to take a stopwatch (you can use the application on your phone), a text to check your reading speed and read it at a normal pace for one minute. It is important that the text is non-technical, does not contain highly specialized terms and concepts, and is not familiar to the reader. The text should not be too primitive. The testee must see the text for the first time so that the results are not artificially inflated.

But what do you care about speed, if you don't understand with what awareness you absorb the text? :)

A much better way to find out your reading speed is to take a free online test. To do this, sit back, enter your name in the form above, press the button and you will immediately see the text that you need to read, slowly, trying to understand everything that is written.

When the entire text is read - click on the button at the very bottom. The program will automatically determine the reading speed and prompt you to answer a few questions to understand the degree of assimilation of the material. As a result of testing, you will receive not only the result of your reading speed and awareness, but also recommendations for improving your reading technique in the format of the book "Everything you wanted to know about speed reading, but were afraid to ask." Enter a name. Click the button and find out your real reading speed. Have a good day.

How can I check my reading speed myself?

We have prepared for you a tool with which you can independently check the speed of reading. Our tool include a certain amount of text that you need to read as quickly as possible. You will then have the opportunity to answer a series of questions about the text, allowing the program to determine your level of understanding. Based on the data received, a result and a certificate are issued. This certificate can be shared with your friends on social networks and challenge them to a battle to test the speed and awareness of reading :).

If you want to do it yourself, you can do it according to the following scenario. A text of medium complexity is taken, located on one sheet. You will need an assistant who will keep track of the time and will be able to test the level of your understanding of the information. Check algorithm:

Simultaneously with the start command and the start of the stopwatch, you begin to silently read the text.

When the text is finished, you say stop - time stops.

Then you need to answer a few questions regarding the content (reading speed implies a full reading comprehension).

The last step is to count the words in the text and determine the average number of words per minute (words in the text can be counted before reading).

You can get such a certificate based on the results of passing the test

How to check the reading speed of a child?

A child's reading speed can be tested in a similar way. The child should read aloud, at least in elementary school. Then you can switch to the usual way of checking for adults.

Schools often test reading skills by counting the number of words read per minute. This gives a small error, since words come in different sizes, but a similar verification method can also be used.

What reading speed is considered normal for adults and children?

The average reading speed for an adult is 200-230 words per minute. Below average, but an acceptable rate is 150-200 words per minute. Adults who read more than 230 words per minute are considered fast readers. For the speed reading technique, the optimal speed is 350-400 words per minute.

In children, the indicators are dynamic and change depending on age. Approximate norms used in elementary school:

20-30 words per minute for first grade;
45-60 words per minute for second grade;
70-85 words per minute for third grade;
90-125 words per minute for fourth grade.

How to choose the right text to test reading speed?

The criteria for selecting text to test reading speed are identical for adults and children. The only difference is the volume and complexity of the information. The text must match the following parameters:

medium difficulty appropriate for age;
the absence of specific unfamiliar words or their minimum number;
no dialogs;
location on one page;
large, comfortable to read font;
lack of pictures and other distracting elements.

In our tool for testing reading speed and comprehension, we tried to take into account all these factors so that the resulting tool would be convenient for both adults and children. At the same time, he gave a fairly clear answer to the question about the real reading speed.

It should be remembered that reading speed is a variable parameter, which decreases if a person rarely sits down at a book, and increases with constant reading. There are many special techniques aimed at significantly increasing the speed of reading text information.

Everything you wanted to know about speed reading but were afraid to ask test. So don't waste a second,

go back to the very beginning of the page and go take the test!

Reading speed test online is simple, convenient and fast

We have already written so much here about how to measure your reading speed correctly, achieve awareness and interpret the results, that every second of delay before you pass the online reading speed test and receive a personal certificate is just like death. Return to the very beginning of the page, enter your name in the field under the video and go to the enchanting world of unfamiliar texts and tricky questions :).
