Zig Ziglar lived a difficult life. Born in 1926, he was the 10th of 12 children. His father died when he was 6 years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings alone during the worst depression the world had ever seen. Zig’s mother did not have much of a formal education but what she lacked in training she made up for with a hard work ethic and strong morals which she taught to her children.

Born from these humble beginnings, Zig became a global leaders in the realm of positive thinking and self improvement. Zig Ziglar wrote See You at the Top as his own how-to guide on living a life of happiness, health and wealth. The book is cleverly written with many great stories to illustrate his points. Throughout the book, Zig uses the imagery of a flight of stairs next to an elevator that is ‘out of order’. The idea is that while each step gets you closer to the ultimate goal of a happy purposeful life, the steps must be taken in order and there are no shortcuts (as the elevator is ‘out of order’, you have to take the stairs). Make no mistake about it, goal setting requires concentration and is serious work. Setting arbitrary goals with no real deadlines or objectives (i.e., I want to lose weight) rarely if ever become reality.

Zig says goals should always, 1) take into consideration your current reality, 2) identify current roadblocks, 3) be big enough to create excitement, 4) be long range to avoid being caught up by minor setbacks, 5) be broken down into daily actionable increments and 6) must be specific and measurable.

To start, write down on a piece of paper everything you want to be or do or have. Take an uninterrupted hour to do this and really empty your head of all your aspirations. When you’re done put the goals away for two days then come back to them and write one line to describe why you want to achieve each goal.

Your goals should cover all areas of your life, including financial, physical, social, career, family and spiritual. Setting just one or two goals will work but Zig says you will not be happy unless you are striving to achieve in each category because your life will not be balanced.

Most people are very busy getting nothing done. It’s easy to get caught up in the business of life so it’s very important to break the goals down into daily tasks. If you want to “make it big” you must work towards your objectives on a daily basis.

By doing small things every day to work towards your goal, you will be amazed at the progress you will see in a short period of time.

Many times along your path you will have interruptions, it’s inevitable, and life frequently gets in the way. This imagery is very powerful. So often we get down because of minor setbacks. If we were to give up at every roadblock we wouldn’t get very far.

There is an interesting story that Zig uses in the book about this. Imagine a pilot is flying from New York to Los Angeles. After the plane takes off for LA it encounters a major thunderstorm which was not on the radar before takeoff. Will the pilot give up and turn back to New York? Of course not! The pilot will adapt, adjust the path accordingly and move on towards the target.

In the same way when obstacles appear a simple change of direction may be needed but not an abandonment of the larger goal. Usually the problems that arise are quite minor. Take a step back, look at the new situation that has arisen and change your plan accordingly.

As mentioned above, by making the goals long term it’s easier for you to side-step these small obstacles when they arise.

While properly setting goals is only one step in the overall Zig success formula, I believe it is the most important one. Many people will tell that they know it is a good idea to set goals, but only 3% of us actually properly set and execute them. It’s like that with many of the lessons in Zig’s book. Most of them are ‘common sense’ but rarely acted upon.

In a world where instant gratification is the norm, See You at the Top is a refreshing look at the realities of becoming a successful individual. It is a must read as a refresher for those who are deep into personal development or as a solid base for those who are starting their paths to health, wealth and happiness.

Morocco. November 1920. An arrested man named Albert Maillard is brought to the gendarmerie and begins to tell his story. Right before the end of World War I, Mayar served with the son of a millionaire, Edouard Perekur, and like all ordinary soldiers, they expected the end of this bloody war. One day, their lieutenant Henri Pradel received an order to stop hostilities, but instead of following it, he sends two completely unfired soldiers, Terrier and Grisagne, to reconnaissance. Soon they are killed, and Pradel orders to attack the positions of the Germans, who also no longer wanted to fight anymore.

During this attack, Albert stumbles upon the dead Terjeu and Grisagnier and sees that they have been shot in the back. The hero realizes that the lieutenant killed them. To hide the traces of his crime, Pradel blows up the bodies of dead soldiers and tries to kill Albert, but he is prevented by a shell that exploded nearby. As a result, Albera falls asleep in the earth in a funnel and he becomes unable to breathe. Edouard saw his friend fall asleep and managed to pull him out. When he managed to bring Albert to his senses, a fragment flew into him himself.

Edouard is admitted to the hospital. The shell disfigured his face so much that now he was forced to feed with a syringe. Albert takes care of his friend who saved him and even steals morphine for him. Edouard's flashback shows how his mother died and he had to live with his incredibly wealthy and, accordingly, very busy and strict father. Edouard asked Albert to make sure that he died for his father, because he did not want to return to him. Albert complied with the request of a friend and changed his documents with the deceased orphan, whom no one will definitely look for. He also sent a letter to Edouard's relatives that he had died. He attached drawings of his talented friend to the letter.

Édouard was sent to Paris, where the doctors tried to offer him a series of operations to correct his face, but he did not need it. Right before the demobilization, Albert was found by Lieutenant Pradel, who introduced him to Madeleine, Edouard's sister. The girl asked to be taken to her brother's grave. Albert hesitated and tried to avoid this request, and Perekur realized that Edouard was still alive. He agreed with Albert that they would show Madeleine the grave of another soldier, and Mayar, in turn, would forget about that unnecessary attack.

Paris. November 1919. Albert and Edouard live together. Albert obtains morphine for Édouard by plundering war-crippled soldiers, who are given this painkiller free of charge by the state. One day, Edouard becomes close to the neighbor girl Louise, who understands his lowing and translates for Albert. Edouard regains a taste for life and develops a plan to steal a lot of money. Together with Louise, he offers Albert to sell non-existent monuments to war heroes, which at that time will be very actively ordered. However, Albert does not like this idea and the friends quarrel. It even comes to blows. At this time, Henri Pradel is turning some kind of scam with the burial of dead soldiers. Édouard creates a catalog of monuments with Louise, and Albert robs bank customers. Soon he manages to steal more than enough money to create and distribute Edouard's catalogs. Marcel also wants to erect a monument in his native 8th arrondissement of Paris and one day he is presented with five sketches to choose from. On one of them, he notices the same signature as on the drawings of his son. It is this sketch that he approves for a new monument and asks to meet with its author. Soon Édouard and Albert receive a whole bunch of checks as payment for monuments from their catalog. Friends celebrate this, and at this moment Edouard learns that Albert met with his sister, and that she is married to Pradel.

Edouard falls into a narcotic sleep, and when he wakes up with Louise and Albert, he finds the most incorruptible inspector in the government. It is to him that they throw a letter exposing Pradel's scams. The inspector arrives at the cemetery and indeed discovers that the bodies of the soldiers are buried in very small coffins. Pradel bribes the inspector and he takes the money. Meanwhile, Albert begins dating Pauline.

Smoke break's assistant finds Anri in bed with another of his girls. He informs the chief that the inspector sent a report about their fraud upstairs and even attached to him the bills with which they tried to bribe him. Henri realized that this was the end. At this time, Edouard, Louise and Albert moved to live in a luxury hotel. The day was approaching when they planned to run away with all the money to Africa.

The mayor of the 8th arrondissement informed Marseille that the artist from whom many commissioned monuments does not really exist. Marcel did not need such advertising, and therefore he asked to keep everything a secret. At this time, Henri came to his wife to ask her to help meet her father. However, the girl knew everything about his mistresses and said that she was deeply indifferent to his fate. All she wanted from him was the child he had already conceived for her. Pradel still gets to see Marcel. On it, Marcel asks him to find a fraudster who sold non-existent monuments to everyone. For this, he agrees to solve his problem at the highest level.
