Is Your Mama a Llama

A baby llama finds out what kind of mama his animal friends have. Each page uses clues and rhyming words to make an animal guessing game for readers.
BEFORE READING:

Have them tell you about the other animals they see on the cover.
WHILE READING:

Ask them what is on the front cover, and if they have ever seen one before.

Show the children the front of the book. Ask them to guess what the book is about.

Stop at any time if there is something you or the children would like to talk about.

Ask them questions so that they can connect what is happening in the book to things they
already know about. Try some of these ideas: o What does your mama look like?
o What kinds of foods do you like to eat? o How do you go to bed each night?AFTER READING:
- Spend some time talking about the story. Ask the children things like:
o How many different animals did you see in the book?
o What does a llama look like?
o Which animal likes to eat grass? Which animal hangs by his feet?
Read this book several times to the children. Hearing the same story again and again helps them learn new words and understand the ideas the hear better. Each day, pick a different activity to do with the children after reading.
MATH AND SCIENCE
Pick a page of the book and count all of the animals that are the same in the picture. Help the children to count the different members of the animal family as well. Ask them to tell you which family is bigger, and which family is smaller.
THINKING SKILLS
Ask the children to tell you how they get ready for bed each night. Then, ask them to choose an animal from the book, and describe how they think that animal gets ready for bed. Ask them to tell you what is the same and what is different about the ways they and the animal get ready for bed each night.
PRETEND PLAY
Allow the children to pretend to be the mama while you pretend to be the child. Allow them to dress up like you, wearing some adult clothes and shoes. Pretend to go grocery shopping together, run errands, pretend to cook a meal, read you a story or tuck you into bed.
MUSIC AND MOVEMENT
Play “Simon Says” as you move like the different animals in the story. Take turns calling out the animal to move like. Fly like bats, flap your wings like a swan, moo like cows, clap your hands like seals, and hop like kangaroos. Teach the children to hear “Simon Says” before they hear what animal to move like or they will be “Simon”.
MOTOR SKILLS
Make your own lacing cards.
Take an empty cereal box and tear it apart so that it lies flat. Using the inside part of the box, draw animals and cut them out. Punch holes along the outer edges of the animals. Using an old shoelace or yarn (tape the end to make it easier to thread through the holes), teach the children how to lace through the holes.
ART
Have the children color a picture of their family. Label each of the family members as they point them out to you.

Pioneers, the front and needles
Maria Mikhailovna PETUKHOVA, instructor of the Taimyr district committee of trade unions (last position. — Author's note). In Norilsk since 1939. An 11-year-old girl, along with the family of her military father, arrived from Igarka. Mom worked in the only sewing workshop in Norilsk at that time.
– Only a year and a half has passed since we arrived in Norilsk. And here we met the war. In the morning, when my mother and I woke up, my mother says: “Daughter, the war has begun.” I ask: "What are we going to do?" “Go to school, and I go to work.” That's how it was: you study, study, and I will work, my mother said, - recalled Maria Mikhailovna at 1997.*
Norilsk children studied at the school at the Zero Picket. The school was a wooden one-story building.
Only after the war, in 1946, another floor and a gym were added to the building. And during the war, the pioneers of Norilsk had no time for sports.
- We have created Timurov teams. They collected things for the front, sent parcels. And even once our class - the fourth - received the answer that "your mittens keep us warm." I still remember... Basically, we went from house to house and collected, they gave us so many things, we did not have time to send them. From here, from Norilsk, what could be sent? Only warm clothes...
Norilsk pioneers also helped the population of the city. When scurvy began, children and adults were sent to collect pine needles. Children were taken to Lama Lake. First in a pioneer camp, then as ordinary workers.
- We had a competition organized. For example, I remember how I packed my bag, I can’t drag it in any way, and the head of the camp looks at me and says: “Well, Pestova (Petukhova’s maiden name. - Approx. Author), we will definitely mark you.
And so, I remember, at the evening pioneer line, they handed me a wooden pen with a pen, while other children received one - an elastic band, one - a pencil, one - a notebook ...
From the collected needles, says Maria Petukhova, they made a concentrate, which was sent to Norilsk. At school, for example, there was a bucket tank for two. And schoolchildren were not allowed to study until each student had drunk a mug of a very bitter coniferous drink.
In the meantime, childhood passed among the prisoners.
– During the war food was bad, but I really liked picking berries and mushrooms. And my father sent me to the first fish farm. And there was also a zone, but it is a free zone. And mostly there were Latvians, Estonians. They were fishing and I was with them. ... And there was one point - Estonians lived there. Nice interesting guys. I think it's necessary. I was still a child, especially so I did not understand anything. We danced with them. As if it were their own.
They had terribly big boots, I remember. They say: "Put them on, Manya, and come with us." We will pull out the net, and there are so many fish! They will choose the one that is best for salting, and the rest - back into the water ...
A person, said Maria Petukhova, starts from childhood. Maria Mikhailovna considered her childhood not easy, but still good.

- In the pre-war years, a unique person worked at the plant - Vladimir Nesterov, who left a letter called "Wire Radio". Thanks to the letter, we can safely say that in 1936 this radio was already established in Norilsk. The first radio center appeared in the area of the Zero Picket, and a two-kilometer air-wire communication line was equipped in the area of Zavodskaya Street.
At the same time, the first TASS printouts went out, which were voiced by the first radio announcer Gushchina.
For reference: TASS printouts are official reports of Soviet newspapers and the government, which were transmitted to Norilsk in Morse code. Local radio operators received these messages, deciphered them and gave them for sounding. (TASS - Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union. - Author's note).
- Approximately in 1938, stationary radio stations and amplifying devices appeared in the area of the Medvezhiy Ruchey mine, other areas of the camp and the village.
