New #MeToo version! Inspire Today's Girls!

Long ago in France there lived a King and Queen.  More than anything, they longed for a child.  At last, to their great happiness, the Queen gave birth to a little girl.  All the bells in the land were rung with joy.

The King and Queen invited all the fairies in the kingdom to the Naming Party for the baby.  And what a party it was!  Plates and silverware of pure gold were set with care before each guest. But one fairy, Maleficent, who had left 50 years before and had not been seen in all that time, showed up at the door.  Quickly the King and Queen found a place setting for the new guest.  But alas, the plate and the silverware were not of pure gold.   This made the old fairy very angry.

Soon it was time for each Fairy to give her blessing to the baby.  When it came to Maleficent’s turn, she stood up and pointed her long finger at the sleeping baby girl in the cradle.

“I declare, before all of you,” Maleficent called out, “that this child, on her 16th birthday, shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, and die!”

With a whoosh of smoke, the evil fairy vanished.  Everyone cried out with alarm, as you can imagine.  But one fairy had not yet given her blessing.  The King and Queen asked this fairy, whose name was Merryweather, to reverse the curse.  Merryweather shook her head sadly –  that was not possible.  But she could soften the curse.

“On her 16th birthday,” she said, “when the princess pricks her finger on the spinning wheel, instead of dying she will fall asleep for 100 years.”

“One hundred years!” said the Queen.   “After our daughter turns 16, we will not know her anymore!”

The King ordered every spinning wheel in the kingdom to be brought to the palace and burned.  To be extra sure the princess would not be anywhere near a spinning wheel, he also ordered the fairy Merryweather, along with two other fairies, Flora and Fauna, to take the baby far away.  The fairies would raise the child in a cottage, deep in the woods.  There, they would keep her safe until after her 16th birthday.  After that day it would be safe to bring back the princess, who had been named Aurora, to the castle.

Aurora grew up knowing no others than the three fairies, whom she knew as her aunts.  The animals of the forest were her friends.

The birds and the deer, the chipmunks and the rabbits, followed her around as she fed them treats and cooed to them.  From the time she was little, Aurora was told she must stay inside the hills that surrounded them.   She did not mind that in the least.  The woods were wide and deep inside the hills, and there was plenty of room for her to play.

One day, Aurora came home to the cottage to find her three aunts preparing for a party.  “What’s going on?” she said.

“Tonight we will celebrate your 16th birthday!” said Flora.

“It is?” said Aurora.  “That means tomorrow I go back to the castle!”

“Yes!” said Merryweather.  “We have kept you safe from that spinning wheel for 16 years. Soon it will be time for you to take up your royal life as a princess.”

“And the first thing for you will be to get married,” said Fauna.

“Married, already?” said Aurora.  “Do you know who I’m supposed to marry?”

“We do,” said Fauna with a wave of her hand, “but there’s no need to worry about that.  Even if he’s a bit strange, some might say a bit horrid,  you won’t have to spend much time with him, after all.

“And he does come from a fine family,” Flora added with a quick smile.

“Wait a minute!” said Aurora, pulling back.  “Why do you say he’s a bit horrid?”

“It’s best not focus on such things, dear,” said Merryweather.

“Just do everything your husband tells you to do,” said Flora, “and you will be fine.”

“This is not turning out like I thought!” cried Aurora.  “How long do I have to stay married?”

“For the rest of your life, of course,” said Fauna.

“No, no, this is all wrong!” cried Aurora.  She turned away, then said in a firm voice,  “I would rather prick my finger on a spinning wheel and fall asleep for 100 years than have to marry someone I don't want to marry! Maybe by the time I wake up, people won’t have to get married if they don’t want to!”  And she ran out the door.

“Dear me,” said Merryweather to the other two fairies.  “I don’t believe that went over very well.”

Aurora ran deep into the woods where her animal friends lived.

A deer hopped beside her, along with the rabbits and chipmunks.  “We have to get out of here,” she said to all of them. Then pointing to a mountain pass, she said, “We will go right through the hills.”

Soon Aurora came to a road.  In the distance was a carriage, coming closer to her.  As the rider approached, her animal friends scattered.

“Hail!” said the stranger.  “I’m afraid my carriage scared away your pets.  May I give you a lift?”

Aurora had never seen a man before.  But she couldn’t think about that – unless she could find a spinning wheel, the very next day her aunts would take her back to the palace.

“Actually,” said Aurora to the stranger, “there is something I need a great deal.”

“What’s that?” said the stranger, hopping out of the carriage.  Very nicely dressed was he, and well mannered, too.

Thanks to Artist, FERNL

“A spinning wheel,” said Aurora.

“A spinning wheel!” said the stranger.  “But there are none left in the land – everyone knows that.”

“Well, you see,” said Aurora, rubbing her hands together, “I have this friend.  She needs a spinning wheel in the worst way.”  Aurora looked directly at the stranger.  “It’s a matter of life or death.”

The stranger looked at Aurora’s eyes.  At last, he said, “I may know of one,” he said.  “But this needs to stay between you and me.”  The stranger stepped closer.

“Not far from here lives an old woman who spun yarn all her life.  When the orders came to burn all the spinning wheels, she could not bear to let go of her beloved spinning wheel since it had been in her family for many years.  She came to me,” he said, pointing down the road, “as I’m a prince from the next kingdom. She begged me to let her store it away safely. So I put it in the attic room of my castle tower, where no one ever goes, until the 16 years had passed.”

“She begged me to let her store it away safely,” said the prince.

“Would you take me to your castle tower?” said Aurora.

“I shouldn’t,” said the prince.  Then after a moment, he said, “But I will.”

She stepped onto his carriage.  Soon they were at the tower, and they both stepped out.  The prince said, “This is not for your friend, is it?”

“Thank you for taking me here,” said Aurora.  “I will always remember your kindness.  Now if you please, I must do what I must do.”

Aurora turned and went up the tower stairs to the very last stair.  The door in front of her creaked open.  Inside, all was dark and musty.  She could barely take a step for all the spider webs.  But she pushed them aside and stepped forward. There, in a far corner, was the spinning wheel.  From a small window, she could tell the sun was already setting.  “I hope this works,” she said, “before it’s too late.”

Thanks to Artist, Shambhavi, 11, UK

Aurora held out her finger to the tip of the spindle.   She pricked her finger on that spindle.  One tiny droplet of blood dripped from her finger. At once, Aurora felt dizzy.  She fell onto an old dusty velvet blanket that lay on the attic floor, and fell into a deep sleep.  Moments later, all the others in the castle, servants and royals alike, fell asleep too, and so did the prince, who was still waiting for her outside the tower.  Within hours, thorns and vines had sprung up and wrapped around the castle, so thickly that no human or beast could pass through.

For 100 years, Aurora and the others slept.

Thanks to Artist, ChristyTortland

After 100 years had passed, Aurora blinked her eyes awake.  Then all the others in the castle also awoke.  Everyone started to do what they had been doing when they had fallen asleep 100 years before. The thorns and vines around the castle melted away.

Aurora stepped down the tower stairs to find the prince.

Thanks to Artist, FERNL

Together, they stepped into the prince’s carriage.   Down the road to the market square, they discovered a whole new world.  Bicycles and streetcars, cameras and streetlights – such marvels to behold!

Perhaps best of all, they learned that in this strange new time, it was quite all right for young women and men to get to know each other, if that’s what they wanted to do, and even perhaps to fall in love.  As Aurora and the Prince took each other’s hand to explore this wonderful new world together, that is exactly what they wanted to do.

A fairy tale for a child who does not want to sleep! Nutik and Buttercup.

A couple of years ago I wrote fairy tales for the Fairy Tales for the Smart Girl series. The book is dedicated to the independence of children. And, of course, one of the sore topics for parents in this matter is children's sleep.

I found that I have an extra dream story that won't be included in the book. So I decided to post it to the public.

Children very often do not want to sleep because they are afraid to miss all the fun, because they do not understand the importance of sleep.

The story of Nyutik and Buttercup will help you explain to children how important it is to sleep.

Happy reading!

Tale about Nyutik and Buttercup.

Caterpillar sisters lived in the same forest. They were very friendly and cheerful, and, of course, they were very fond of eating leaves. The caterpillars were called Nyutik and Buttercup.

Nyutik liked to eat birch leaves most of all, and Buttercup liked to eat maple leaves. All day long they ate the leaves and grew.

Nyutik liked to sleep at night and gain strength . When it started to get dark, Nyutik climbed into the flower, curled up and fell asleep soundly. And all night she flew in her sleep. As soon as dawn began, Nyutik woke up and ate the leaves again.

But Buttercup did not like sleeping very much , she tossed and turned in her flower all night. Often even crawled out of the flower to gnaw on the leaves. And because of this Dandelion had no dreams at all, only very short ones. And as soon as dawn came, the tired Buttercup crawled out of her flower and ate the leaves again.

So day after day went on, until one day something unusual happened… One morning Nyutik crawled out of her flower. Buttercup was surprised at first, then worried. She crawled into Nyutik's flower and saw that she was sleeping there, wrapped in a strange cocoon.

“Nyutik, stop sleeping! Let's go chew some leaves!" Buttercup shouted. But Nyutik did not answer her, she just continued to sleep sweetly.

“Well, okay! I'll get more!" Buttercup said and crawled away to gnaw the leaves.

One day passed, then another, and Nyutik was still fast asleep .

At this time Buttercup decided to sleep as little as possible in order to eat more leaves and play. She went to bed very late and often crawled out to nibble on the leaves. Buttercup was so tired that she even slept through the dawn a couple of times.

And then one day Buttercup heard strange sounds from Nyutik's flower.

- Wake up, sleepyhead? she called.

And in response I saw a beautiful butterfly fly out of a flower.

Butterfly flew a little and landed right in front of Buttercup.

-Who are you? Buttercup asked warily.

-You didn't recognize me? It's me, Nutik! I dreamed that I was flying, and now, look, I have become a butterfly! Really, great?

- Wow! I want that too! And what needs to be done for this?

Nyutik thought about it and said: “We need to think. I ate the leaves and you ate the leaves. I slept soundly at night, and you?

-But I don't…

-At night I dreamed that I was flying, - continued Nyutik.

-I don't…

-I guess that's the whole point! You need to sleep to grow and become a butterfly ! - said Nutik and flapped her wings, - It's so cool to fly! This is my dream!

And Nyutik flew away.

Buttercup looked after her and went to sleep .

Sleep, my joy, sleep. Reading to children before going to bed

One of the most serious problems that preschool children (and their parents!) have is the problem of sleep. I don't think anyone can argue with that. A child who does not fall asleep for hours can bring parents to a nervous breakdown, especially when, after long laying-sickness, the baby begins to wake up every 20–30 minutes. Here iron nerves are needed so as not to break loose! Unfortunately, not all parents are able to remain calm.

In addition to falling asleep for a long time, there are a number of other problems associated with the sleep of children from 3 to 7 years old. In our review, we will consider the causes and ways to solve them. And, of course, let's not forget about books that will help the child fall asleep quickly and forget about their fears. In the period from 3 to 7 years (the so-called preschool period) there is another global crisis in the development of the child. At this time, he may partially or completely refuse daytime sleep, he develops night fears, he falls asleep worse at night, etc.

All these problems are temporary. As a rule, they do not require the intervention of specialists. If a child feels the love and protection of his parents, then very soon he will calm down and learn to fall asleep without unnecessary tears. How to help the baby in this difficult time for him? At preschool age, it is no longer possible to force a child to sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to create conditions that will prepare him for sleep. It can even be a kind of ritual: open a window in the bedroom for ventilation, fold toys, spread the bed, read a book at night.

Son is the most distant country in the world. Max Frisch

Among those books that you can read to your baby at night, so that he falls asleep faster and more peacefully, I can recommend the following.

A kind and funny story from the Dobraya kniga publishing house "Go to bed, little bear!". The fidget bear cub cannot go to sleep in any way: at first it is impossible to drive him into the den, then it is difficult to put him down. Either the pillow is not the same, then you need to roll over to the other side. Doesn't this remind you of anything? After all, just like that, the child is looking for ways to stay awake longer: ten times he will ask to drink water, fifteen - to sit on the potty, etc. As they say, all means are good to achieve the goal. When reading a story about a bear cub, kids, of course, recognize their own behavior in his behavior and learn to look at themselves from the outside. After all, after such a long falling asleep, it was not easy for the bear cub to wake up in the spring! Using the example of a book hero, it is always much easier to understand some things, and this book is no exception. You should talk about the behavior of the bear cub with the children, invite them to evaluate what is good and what is bad. You can arrange a kind of game: let the baby have time to do all his business before the fairy tale ends, in order to fall asleep "together" with the bear cub. Or vice versa: if the child says that the teddy bear behaved badly, then remind him that he himself does not look like a book hero at all, because he falls asleep much faster.

The hero of the fairy tale "Sweet dreams, Little Fox!" cannot fall asleep either. (Nigma publishing house): energy is overflowing, and he wants to run and play, because foxes are nocturnal. The little fox is perplexed why many animals go to bed at sunset and at the same time say that they are tired. Mom explained to the baby that not everyone falls asleep and wakes up at the same time: many get up very early when the foxes are fast asleep. But the Little Fox is not satisfied with this answer, and he goes for a night walk in the forest to find out who else is not sleeping at this time. During this journey, the baby learns the secret of a good sleep, which the old Owl told him: before going to bed, you need to think about something good and pleasant. Now the Fox will fall asleep without any problems! And along with him, and little readers - the advice of the wise Owl will suit everyone!

A small toy book “Going to bed”, which was released by the ND Play publishing house from the Necessary Books series. The poem about a fox named Zlatka, who does not want to go to bed, will be remembered by the kids. It also tells about what helped Zlatka fall asleep (she took her favorite doll, covered herself with a blanket, etc.). Your child may enjoy these tips and help them get into bed faster.

Another toy book - "Day and Night" from the publishing house "Mosaic-Synthesis" - tells that everyone should sleep at night. The child can stroke the little animals and wish them "good night!". There is almost no text - captions for pictures.

Illustrations from the book “It's time for the sheep to sleep. A fairy tale for those who find it difficult to fall asleep. Publishing house "Peter"

The grandmother hen from the book “Time for Sleep for the Sheep” (Peter publishing house) faced the same problem as most parents: she does not know how to put her chickens to bed! And then she decided to tell them a story about a sheep that counted elephants. Yes, yes, lambs, in order to fall asleep, also have to count someone! Elephants jump over the fence, and the main thing is to count them in time. And everything would have been fine, but one of the elephants ran up to the fence and stopped: he did not want to jump. No matter how they asked him, no matter how they begged him - no way! Then the sheep whispered a magic word into his ear, and... Only after that she was able to fall asleep. The plot is reminiscent of the old Soviet cartoon "How Petya Pyatochkin considered elephants." The child is offered another way to fall asleep: lie down and count some animals, imagining that they are jumping over the fence. Maybe this is the way for your little one! At the end of the book, there is "Materials for Parents" with tips and materials for games based on the book. Thus, the book will not only help the child fall asleep, but also become one of the leisure options.

Perfect for reading before going to bed and a collection of "Good night! Eleven and a half sleepy stories of the Bunny and the Fox" from the publishing house "Rare Bird". Each story takes up one or two pages. In order to fall asleep faster, Bunny and Little Fox wish each other good night, while trying to make this wish special. The stories are funny and touching. Here, for example, is the story of how the Little Fox could not fall asleep for a long time, feeling some kind of emptiness in his stomach. He fell asleep only after the Bunny wished him "good night". These words are repeated very often in the book, growing into a kind of magic words, with the help of which many problems can be solved. The text is accompanied by the author's illustrations: kind and calm - which should be in a book about sleep.

Children will definitely like the collection from the Willy-Winky (AST) publishing house Viking Tuppy and the Pillow for Magical Dreams. Each story in this collection is a separate story with its own conclusion that children need to learn: “To be a hero, you don’t have to be great”, “Maybe the medicines will not taste good, but it’s not so scary”, “The main thing is to believe very strongly in something someday, then dreams will come true”, “You can’t touch what doesn’t belong to you”... After reading the fairy tale, you can talk with your child about what you read - the topic of the conversation is set in the book. And all the stories end with a sound sleep of the heroes!

I can also recommend a collection of works for a peaceful sleep "Tired toys are sleeping" from the publishing house "Makhaon". The book contains poems and fairy tales that will set the child to sleep: the fairy tale by D. Mamin-Sibiryak "It's time to sleep", the poem by E. Moshkovskaya "They ran until the evening" and others.

Well, what to do if the child began to be overcome by fears? If he does not sleep in his bed, demands to turn on the light, wakes up every hour and asks to be carried? First of all, one should not think that the child is inventing something. Most likely, the baby himself suffers from his own fears, because this phenomenon is very common at preschool age. It is now that the child first encounters fear, previously he was not aware of this feeling. A child's fantasy can suggest to him a variety of pictures: that someone is sitting under his bed, that he will fall asleep and not see his relatives, that they will forget about him, that they will leave him, that a fire or flood will start, etc. These fears must be taken seriously: it is very important to understand their cause and try to calm the baby.

Illustrations from the book "Who's Afraid of Monsters?". Publishing house "Nigma"

To combat night terrors, I recommend the following books. "Who's afraid of monsters?" from the Nigma publishing house. The little bear cub has to sleep alone in his room for the first time. On the one hand, he is glad - he has his own room, which means he is already big. But as soon as he turned off the light, the room no longer seemed so nice. Shadows have turned into scary monsters, old socks have turned into monsters - there's no way to sleep! The only way out is to take your favorite toy bunny Jumpy, he will definitely not let the teddy bear offend. This book is an example of a children's "psychotherapeutic" fairy tale. Its plot and the actions of the characters are exactly the same as the recommendations of psychologists for dealing with children's nightmares: it is necessary to make the child's fear funny. Do not make fun of the child, do not shame, but laugh with him, as the elder brother of the bear cub does in the fairy tale. Another way to help a child cope with fear is to invent some kind of protector toy and endow it with magical properties. This is exactly what the elder brother of the bear cub does, after which the baby falls asleep safely.

Tom the Squirrel, the hero of one of the fairy tales in the collection “Pajama Stories. Tales for the night" from the publishing house "Clever-Media-Group". He found another way to deal with nightmares: he attached the brightest star above his bed. After reading this story, you can put some beautiful night light in the child’s room and say that the same bright star is shining in his room. In the second tale from this collection, the boy Yukki falls asleep hugging his plush toys. We considered this option above. And to the mouse Suzy, the heroine of the third fairy tale, a dream bird flies at night and after a short walk returns the baby to the crib. After such a journey, the eyes stick together by themselves. Well, it’s also a good idea if a dream bird flies to your baby before going to bed, which can not only tell an interesting story, but also drive away all fears.

In the fight against fears, the book "How mice went on a hike" from the ENAS-BOOK publishing house can also help.
