Culture

Catherine II writes a short review of the Iliad to Voltaire, Soviet cosmonauts go into orbit with Eldar Ryazanov's autobiography, young Marina Tsvetaeva and Sergei Efron dedicate books to each other and publish them in their home publishing house.

April 23 is World Book and Copyright Day. The funds of Moscow museums keep a lot of old books, and each of them has its own story. Read about several interesting specimens and their authors in a joint article by mos.ru and the Mosgortur agency.

"Omir's Iliad" by Peter Ekimov

The ancient Greek poet Homer is hidden behind the name Omir, unknown to the modern reader. That is how, in the Byzantine manner, they called him in Rus'. There is a mention of him in the life of St. Cyril, one of the creators of Slavic writing, who studied the Iliad and the Odyssey at the University of Constantinople. Influenced by the writings of the ancient Greek, he wrote the first poetic works in the new language. In Russia, he became Homer by the 19th century.

Excerpts from the works of Homer in Russian appeared in the time of Ivan the Terrible. Later, fragments of the epic poem about the events of the Trojan War were translated into Russian by Mikhail Lomonosov. The first to translate the Iliad from beginning to end was the poet and prose writer Kiryak Kondratovich (1703–1790), but this text remained only in handwritten form.

Kondratovich's work was continued by collegiate secretary Pyotr Ekimov. In 1776, the first printed book of Homer in Russian was published - "Omir's creations, part I". The book contained the first 12 songs of the Iliad, and the remaining 12 were published as a separate book of Omir's Iliad Part II in 1778. Like his predecessor, Ekimov preferred to translate the work not in verse, but in prose. All educated nobility strove to have a novelty in their library. Among the owners were the Sheremetevs, the edition of Omir's Iliad Part II from their collection is stored in the museum-estate "Kuskovo".

Catherine II wrote to Voltaire in 1770 that a translation of Homer's works was being prepared in the Russian Empire. The Russian Empress was one of the first who managed to evaluate the first part of the translation of the Iliad. On January 28, 1777, she reported to Voltaire:

“Dear sir, this winter I read two Russian translations just made: one by Tassa, the other by Homer. They say they are very good."

You can make sure that the Empress writes the truth to the French thinker on the website of the museum-estate "Kuskovo" by looking through an old book. The virtual exhibition “Books of the 18th century from the collection of the Sheremetev Library”, which was opened by the museum, allows you to get acquainted with other equally interesting items from the library of a noble family.

Eldar Ryazanov’s “Unsummed Results”

Going on a flight, astronauts must take with them into orbit a thing that connects them thousands of kilometers with their home — toys of children, photographs of loved ones, beloved book. The crew members of the Soyuz T-10 spacecraft, which launched on February 8, 1984, took Eldar Ryazanov's autobiography "Unsummed Results".

Behind the scenes of your favorite comedies. Rare photos from the filming of Eldar Ryazanov's films Chertanovo, Troparevo, Arbat: where the heroes of Eldar Ryazanov's main comedies lived

Cosmonauts Vladimir Solovyov, Oleg Atkov and Leonid Kizim were waiting for a long mission, many experiments and tests. It is the crew of the Soyuz T-10 that holds the record, which has not been broken so far - during the flight, Kizim and Solovyov made six spacewalks.

On April 12, 1984, cosmonauts celebrated their professional holiday in orbit. By this date, the Mission Control Center decided to surprise them and invited Eldar Ryazanov and the actors of his new film "Cruel Romance" for a communication session. Eldar Aleksandrovich congratulated the cosmonauts, who in return wished the cinematographer success in his creative work. They could not immediately believe that all this was true - they thought that they were being played.

Live one of the crew members Vladimir Solovyov met with Eldar Ryazanov later at the director's recital. The cosmonaut handed over to the idol the same copy of the “Unsummed Results”, which had been in orbit. On the title page of the book, the members of the Soyuz T-10 crew left a message for Eldar Alexandrovich:

“I hereby certify that this book was with us throughout the entire space flight and was a real member of our crew, fully sharing with us all the joys and hardships of our work, for which we are very grateful to the author.

Today this book is kept in the collection of the film club-museum "Eldar".

"Magic Lantern" by Marina Tsvetaeva and "Childhood" by Sergei Efron

Late spring and early summer of 1911 Marina and Anastasia Tsvetaeva spent in Koktebel visiting Maximilian Voloshin. “How can I repay you? This summer was the best of all my adult years, and I owe it to you, ”Marina Ivanovna later wrote to Voloshin. Indeed, that summer was probably the happiest in her life, because it was then that she met her future husband, Sergei Efron.

Sergei and his sisters Vera and Elizaveta ended up in Koktebel because of the tragic events that happened to their family. In 1910, their brother Konstantin and parents Yakov Konstantinovich and Elizaveta Petrovna passed away. Voloshin, an old acquaintance of Elizabeth Petrovna, having learned about the tragedy, invited Vera, Elizabeth and Sergey to his place to help unwind.

Sergey Yakovlevich and Marina Ivanovna met on the Koktebel beach. She was looking for beautiful stones on the shore, and he volunteered to help her. Tsvetaeva, who believed in fate, made a wish: if a new acquaintance finds her beloved carnelian, then she will certainly marry him. And so it happened. The lovers got married on January 19On the 12th, and in September of the same year, their first daughter was born, who was named Ariadne.

In 1912, the home publishing house of the Tsvetaev-Efron family "Ole Lukoye" published two books that the newlyweds dedicated to each other: "Childhood" by Sergei Yakovlevich and "Magic Lantern" - the second collection of poems by Marina Ivanovna. Copies of both books are now kept in the collections of the House-Museum of Marina Tsvetaeva.

"Meshcherskaya Side" by Konstantin Paustovsky

One of the most important places in the work of the outstanding Soviet writer Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky is occupied by the collection "Meshcherskaya Side" (the writer preferred writing through "o", "Meshcherskaya"), in which he sang the nature of Meshchera .

Konstantin Georgievich's acquaintance with this region happened in 1930. In August, he, a young journalist, was planning a vacation, which he wanted to spend in a secluded place away from the bustle of the city. Paustovsky studied the map and chose the Ryazan village of Solotcha. Having been there, he fell in love with Meshchera forever. Later, in the preface to his collected works, Konstantin Georgievich wrote:

“I found the greatest, simplest and most unsophisticated happiness in the forested Meshchera region. The happiness of being close to your land, concentration and inner freedom, favorite thoughts and hard work.

For Paustovsky, this place in the Ryazan region has become an inexhaustible source of inspiration. It was there that he wrote the story "Isaac Levitan", the first part of "The Tale of Life", many stories and essays.

Paustovsky often visited and worked in Solotch until the mid-1950s. The way Konstantin Georgievich wrote about Meshchera attracted admirers of his work there, so that over time it became more and more difficult for the writer to find the most important thing there, because of which he once fell in love with these places - peace and solitude. Again, he found them in another significant place for Russian literature - in Tarusa, a small town in the Kaluga region.

2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Meshcherskaya Side. This anniversary is dedicated to the online exhibition of the same name, which is open on the website of the Museum of K.G. Paustovsky.

Vera Chaplina's Pets of the Zoo

The name of Vera Chaplina means a lot to the Moscow Zoo. Chaplin, an innovator in the field of animal education, devoted most of her life to the zoo and wrote many books about its animals.

Vera Vasilievna's childhood was difficult - her parents separated when she was very young, and together with her mother Lidia Vasilievna she had to leave her native Moscow for Tashkent. One day the girl got lost in an unfamiliar city. The lonely child was noticed by patrolmen and transferred to an orphanage, and Lidia Vasilyevna had to look for her daughter for a long time. It was during separation from her mother that the girl's love for animals manifested itself - in the shelter she took care of kittens and puppies living on the street.

Returning to Moscow, Vera became a frequent visitor to the country's main zoo and joined a circle of young biologists. Soon she realized that she wanted to connect her life with caring for animals. All pets of the zoo were special for Vera Vasilievna, she noticed that each animal has its own character. Over time, she began to transfer impressions and observations to paper - at 1933 in the journal "Young Naturalist" published the first essay by Chaplin. Thus began her career as an animal writer.

During the Great Patriotic War, Vera Vasilievna became a savior for many animals of the Moscow Zoo. Together with another employee, she accompanied the animals to Sverdlovsk, where they waited out the war, and then, after the end of hostilities, returned them to the capital.

In 2015, the Darwin Museum received an extensive collection of items associated with the name of Vera Chaplina - photographs, documents, books. Among them is the collection of short stories and novels "Pets of the Zoo", first published in 1955 year.

Gomer™ wine level

GoMer™ - a system that helps professionals easily explain their assessment consumer's fault.

The main criteria used to evaluate wines are the level of ripeness of the berries, the potential of the variety and the skill of the winemaker. Homer™ evaluates the level of quality wines using an intuitive scale containing 10 levels.

To correctly evaluate these parameters, the taster must know the standards of the varietal and regional affiliation of grapes, production techniques, stylistic features of wines and, by indirect signs, determine the level ripeness of grapes.

Homer™ Principles:

  • Continuity. Each level, starting from level 1, corresponds to a number of wine parameters.
  • Justice. The assignment of any level, starting from the 1st, speaks of the quality of the wine, not discriminating against him.
  • Rank. The ability to focus on assessing the parameters relevant to each level.
  • Objectivity. Possibility to justify the assessment based on the material parameters of the wine.

For the assessment according to the GoMer system, material components are used qualities - the degree of ripeness of the berries and the potential of the variety, as well as the level of skill winemaker. Organoleptic characteristics serve only as indicators of key indicators.
