The Long List of Free English Levelled Readers

With the school closures at the moment, I have also been looking for English leveled readers (also known as guided readers) to boost my kid’s English reading. There are sooo many resources online for English, that are free and generously available. Some are made available only for this period of school closures.  These that I have included, have the entire collection for free. (I did not include those that only make available a few free samples for you to try before you buy). Whether you are looking for early readers / emergent readers or for slightly older kids, you should be able to find something in this list. Some of these are phonics readers or decodable readers, some are sight word readers (whole language).

Literacy iPad apps for teachers

PRIMARY APPS

Make history 3.99 $

This application is easy for young children to use. It comes with various default settings and ready to use characters and props. Students create illustrations and print their stories, making this app ideal for reinforcing fictional story elements such as character, setting, and plot. The main downside is that it is not easy to edit the story, so I would advise students to pre-write their stories with a storyboard and use this app as a publishing mechanism.

Level Libraries for LAZ Reading Free +
(Paid libraries cost between $3 and $6 for each level.) Teachers familiar with the Reading A–Z website (www.readinga-z.com) will appreciate this app where they can find books for different levels in e-book format. I especially like this app because parents can also use it to find books that their beginners and early readers can read on their electronic devices.

Mad Libs Free
Two of my own children (ages 9 and 13) have been known to play together without fighting when I let them use my iPad to play Mad Libs. They said, "It's so much better than the regular [paper] version because you don't know what the story is going to be until the end!" I like it because it's great for expanding their vocabulary. Can't find an adjective? No problem! Tap on "hint" and a continuous scroll of words they probably wouldn't have thought of would roll across the screen, with gems like crazy, enthusiastic, and hungry.

Sadun's Whiteboard $ 2.99
Since the original development of this app, its creators have added some cool features such as different colored markers, a typewriter tool, and a hidden message option. And what's better than a whiteboard with markers that never run out of ink? Children can write with their fingers or use a typing tool.

iBooks free +
(Full color picture books start at 3.99 to 12.99 dollars; books with chapters cost between $3.99 and $12.99, depending on how long ago the book was published.) This is Apple's answer to e-books, and it's cool! The app comes with a free copy of AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh classic and a library full of empty shelves just begging for more books! Many other classic games are also free, such as Alice in Wonderland, The Ugly Duckling and Velvet Bunny. What sets this app apart from other e-books is the full color images and page flipping features.

Frosty hello free
Letters that look like they are written on a blackboard can be easily moved with your finger. Students can use them like magnetic letters to write words, practice the alphabet, or sort letters into categories. This free app only contains lowercase letters, so that might be a downside. This app includes an email feature so students can send their "messages from the fridge" home.

Puppet Friends HD Free +
(Contains one free trial pack; other packs are available for 99 cents each, or you can buy the director's pack for $2.99.) The theater lover in me loves this app! Imagine how the theater performances of your students come to life! Students select characters from different theme packs, select backgrounds, and head into town to record and watch their shows. This app comes with a Wild West pack that you can play with, but I recommend purchasing the Director's Pass for only 2. 9$9 so you can access all the theme packs including Fairy Tales, Politics and Zombies just to name a few.

USA Today Free
Can't afford to subscribe to your class's newspaper? No problem! USA Today is a free app that looks exactly like the paper copy - full color, with lots of news, maps, charts, and graphs. All the features that teachers love in this newspaper are present in the app. Students can read it like a regular newspaper or navigate to other sections by touching the screen.

Shake-n-Spell Free
I love word games to develop fluency and flexibility in spelling, phonetics and vocabulary. This is a fun game that reminds me of the board game Boggle. You even shake your mobile device to start the game! I also love how you can select one, two, or three minute times—differentiation built in for different levels of learners! This is one big hit with my own kids. This is technically an iPhone app, but it works great on an iPad.

Crazy about books! US$ 4.99
More and more interactive e-books are appearing in the application market. I love this story because it's about reading. There are many interactive places where kids can "play" with the story. Words light up when reading occurs and the voice sounds natural, not robotic. Turn off the sound so students can practice fluency by saying the words as they light up!

APPLICATIONS FOR MIDDLE AND UPPER CLASSES

Constitution and Declaration for iPad Free

They are actually two different applications. Each is a simple app that allows students to read one of these historical documents on an iPad. In the Declaration app, students can view and read a picture of the original parchment Declaration of Independence and learn more about each of its signatories. In the Constitution Appendix, readers can search by article or amendment number, read the full text, and read the notes related to each section. Keep in mind that both of these foundational texts are included in the new Common Core State Standards for the English Language. And you can have these primary sources literally at your fingertips!

Marvel Comics Free +
(Paid editions cost $2.) I'm a big fan of using comics and graphic novels in the classroom. These texts appeal to inquisitive readers and are popular among boys, although many girls also love comics. Full color pages with high quality graphics and easy to read text make this app popular! While you can download some comics for free, you will need to register to get a username and password in order to download other titles.

Free Vocab SAT cards
Paid SAT applications abound, but this one is free. It's not as flashy as some of the others, but it offers a quick and easy way to build vocabulary without wading through hundreds of workbook pages. There are two components: flashcards and quizzes. There are almost 1,000 flash cards in the app and the entire download can be mastered. You can control the quiz feature to include all cards or narrow it down by choosing options such as "never passed a quiz" or "answered badly".

Poem for free

You get 20 poems for free and you can pay to add more. A library of 100 poems costs 99 cents. This app features both modern and classical poets as well as "poem of the day". I love how the verses literally flow across the screen, creating a unique reading experience for this oft-forgotten genre. Connect your iPad to a projector or place it on top of your document camera to have the poem flow across the screen or interactive whiteboard as students enter the classroom.

Newspapers for iPad 2.99 $
If you need a free newspaper for your class, I highly recommend USA Today. This is a high-quality, full-color application that looks just like the paper version (see the Primary Classes section for details). If you want something more, I suggest Newspapers for iPad. For only $2. 99 you can stay up to date with news from all over the world! This amazing resource provides you with a quick and easy way to select a location and then click on a link to a newspaper's website. You need to be online for this app to work, but you can email articles or save them to the Instapaper feature to read later offline.

iTranslate free +
(The basic version of this great translation software is free; upgrading to a more luxurious version costs about $4.) This is a very complex application. You can translate written English into over 50 other languages, or flip it and translate it into English. Some languages (not all) also come with a text-to-speech button so you can hear it said and see how it's written. This is a great app for English learners and for learning foreign languages.

Free books for free
You get 23,469 free public domain books and/or documents. Many of these titles are available through other eBooks (iBooks, Nook, Kindle), but I love that this app's library is already pre-organized into categories such as banned books, classic psychology, epic epics, and more. You need an internet connection to download the books you want, but once you do, you will be able to read the books even offline.

Shakespeare Free +
(Upgrade to Shakespeare Pro for $9.99) This is a fantastic resource for any English teacher. The free version contains the complete works of Shakespeare as well as searchable accompaniment. Want to find all references to poison? No problem! Enter it into a concordance, and in any play, poem or sonnet, every line with the word poison will immediately appear. The "pro" version contains some additional features, such as a glossary and a portrait gallery, but the free version is probably enough if your goal is to have multiple copies of each game.

free
This is a social network for readers. Let your students rate books, get suggestions, and even create book groups online. This is a great way to use social media, but from a literacy standpoint. Ask teachers at your school to start using Goodreads and form their own groups of students and teachers.
