Little red riding hood house

Little Red Riding Hood's Pickity Place in Mason, NH

Journey alongside the Souhegan River and down winding country lanes in the tiny town of Mason in southwestern New Hampshire (pop. approx. 1,150) and soon enough you’ll arrive at Grandmother’s House. Well, sort of. Technically, it’s a wonderful gourmet luncheon spot known as Pickity Place, with a greenhouse, gardens, and gift shop all tucked into a rustic little 225+-year-old dwelling. Let me explain.

A country lane leads to the Mason town line, then the quietest 3-way intersection you’ll ever find, and the entrance to Pickity Place.

In the 1940s, the Caldecott Award–winning illustrator and writer Elizabeth Orton Jones (1910–2005) bought herself a little cottage in Mason with the proceeds from her first book, Twig. When she was called upon by Little Golden Books to illustrate the 1948 edition of Little Red Riding Hood, she drew inspiration for the art from the nearby red Cape-style house that is Pickity Place today. Knowing that, the owners have fun with the property’s brush with fame. Peek into “Grandmother’s Bedroom.”  It’s decked out like a page from the storybook. The “wolf” in residence may look ferocious, but the resident cats know better, and often curl right up with him in the bed.

Nothing to fear here, my dear.

The 1948 Little Red Riding Hood story, illustrated by Eliz. Orton Jones.

Pickity Place is open year-round, and every day except major holidays. In the summer, bees, butterflies, and birds zip from blossom to blossom, and the meandering brick pathways connecting the extensive gardens and open lawn are filled with visitors enjoying the surroundings. In the winter, fresh tracks in the snow indicate that only the deer have been investigating the grounds. But the stillness in the air is refreshing, and you may find yourself speaking in a whisper as you walk from building to building, just to preserve the quiet.

The herb shop is chock-full of gift items, aromatic scents, baking mixes, kitchen accents, gourmet goodies, and treats for your pet.

Pay a visit to the gift shop on your visit.

Purchase a few well-priced spices or pick up a hostess gift for your next evening out, and then make your way over to the dining entrance to take part in one of three daily luncheon seatings. (Even on a Monday in January, the restaurant had several guests. Reserve in advance, no matter the time of year.) The five-course meal is an inventive menu, and each month offers something new, depending on what’s in season.  Herbs and seasonings grown right on the property enhance each entrée.

The January menu begins with a smoked paprika spread and crackers, followed by piping-hot, creamy broccoli soup, alongside honey–molasses bread with ginger butter. Next up, a colorful Southwestern-style toasted-corn salad. Select either baked and stuffed chicken saltimbocca or butternut-squash lasagna for your entrée, and top it all off with the delicious crème caramel.

The entrance to the dining room; creme caramel and chicken saltimbocca.

Courses are presented at a comfortable pace. Sample it all, and if you clean your plate, make like Rosemary, one of the resident cats …

Rosemary the cat enjoys a sunny window ledge set directly above a warm radiator.

… Head home, curl up in a warm room, and take a nap.

Grandmother's House at Pickity Place in Mason -- the inspiration for the 1948 version of "Little Red Riding Hood. "

It would be safe to say that Pickity Place, in Mason, N.H., stands as the world's only destination where you can enjoy a five-course gourmet meal, gift shop, greenhouse, extensive gardens and Little Red Riding House Museum.

Over the Souhegan River and through the woods in the scenic hills of southern New Hampshire leads to the end of a dirt path where suddenly previous scenes of rural isolation and lack of anyone in sight leads to a relatively-speaking population boom. A filled-to-capacity parking lot with crowds of people walking in one direction suggests something interesting could be happening down the road.

Approaching the remotely located Pickity Place in Mason.

Something amazing is more like it. On first view, the sight of a quaint, old red cottage juxtaposed with a huge white ash tree, colorful flowers everywhere, lush green grounds and meandering paths justifies the long drive, as well as challenging the GPS possibly unlike ever before when arriving at a New England travel destination.

Pickity Place is simply a magical place and one that represents the best of quintessential New England travel. It is much more than a restaurant and gift shop as that little red cottage dates back to 1786 and is best known as the model for illustrations for Elizabeth Orton Jones' 1948 version of "Little Red Riding Hood" through Little Golden Books -- a popular series of children's books. To see that red house up front and close is just an amazing feeling as it connects a beloved childhood book with an actual location. Although clearly a fictional story, the presence of the grandmother's home seems so real -- like the cartoon wolf is about to jump out, transform into the real world, and do something nefarious. Interesting anecdote: The white ash tree, which appears in Jones' book, is the largest of its kind in New Hampshire!

Pickity Place main building and big white ash tree.

The first step into the red cottage takes one back to a simpler time and place with its ancient wood design, a quiet nature with no loud background music and tour guides with amped up microphones. On the other hand, the sweet aroma of the refreshing country air permeates into the home where a lovely older woman named Roxanne greets people like a grandmother welcoming in family. Virtually all at once, she somehow converses with customers, takes phone calls and writes down various forms of administrative information while maintaining perhaps the kindest personality for a hostess or greeter that I have ever experienced in New England.

Roxanne handles a phone call at the waiting area.

A familiar scene immediately catches the eye to the left of the reception desk: a wolf with grandma's laced cap tucked under the covers in a big four-poster bed in the Little Red Riding Hood Museum room. Little Red Riding Hood books, collectibles and a table (where a lucky guest can enjoy a meal) surround the room that wonderfully captures the spirit of the 17th century story and its many worthy contemporary versions.

Many consider the five-course meal the highlight of the Pickity Place experience, and that is certainly justified. Restaurant goers could certainly pay more than $100 for an "upscale" meal and a heaping side-dish of attitude in the city where, on the other hand, $21.95 will get you friendly folks at Pickity Place serving you an absolutely delicious meal based on what's available seasonally in the world of locally-sourced foods, herbs and edible flowers (yes, edible flowers!). Three sittings take place for lunch, and the waiting list can be long, so it is best to call ahead. On a summer-like September day, I thoroughly enjoyed a homemade vegetable soup, Caesar salad with shaved cheese and fabulous large crouton, fresh-baked rolls with orange honey butter, fig stuffed pork with applewood and brandy glaze with seasonal vegetables and, for dessert, a peanut butter lava cake. Best meal I've had at a restaurant in a long time!

"We were farm-to-table before anyone knew about farm to table," said Keith Grimes, who with his wife Kim, have owned Pickity Place for many years. "We are the original farm-to-table restaurant!" The dining room soothes and relaxes the dining patron with a few dimly-lit, charming dining rooms (one with Little Red Riding Hood's cape hanging on the wall, and the fireplace that appears in Jones' book), a sunny side room overlooking gardens, and even a table at the Museum (just don't "wolf" down your food, though!). ..

Keith and Kim purchased Pickity Place from its previous owner in 2000 after Keith had served as chef there since 1995. With that experience, as well as culinary training from Johnson and Wales College in Providence, R.I., and meaningful employment at the famous, former Pillar House in Newton, Mass., Keith leads the culinary vision today at Pickity Place, while Kim does the purchasing. Together, their bond as loving husband and wife along with a love for the place they own and its customers create the magical fabric that brings people from all over the world to this hilltop hideaway at the end of a "winding dirt road."

Kim and Keith Grimes, owners of Pickity Place.

"It is a destination," said Kim, of Pickity Place. "People come here for us as there's not a lot to do in the area. We see a lot of people from Connecticut, as well as Boston. We do get visitors from places as far away as Germany. This is where they want to be when visiting the region... the food, the gift shop, gardens, or just to relax for several hours. They don't want to leave."

Kim added, "We are reaching more millennial too, and people are not afraid to come out here in the snow."

Keith, a Watertown, Mass., native and Kim -- a former teacher with mid-western roots -- have such passion for their business and its idyllic location that they soon plan to build a home on the premises.

"I don't miss the noise, the neighbors, everything on top of you in the city," said Kim. "It is just so lovely out here."

The short commute will fit in with their long-time love for the property and business, according to Keith.

"It's what I do, what I love and never really call it work," said Keith, of Pickity Place. "I love creating food. It's just as hard to do something crappy as to do it well. I choose to do something well. Everything on the menu that you eat was made today or last night."

The Pickity Place gift shop comprises about half the business, according to Keith, and offers an inviting, rustic post-and-beam look with herbs and spices, herbal blends, beverages, dips, books including cookbooks and Little Red Riding Hood, and a nice variety of other gifts.

Just down the path from the restaurant and gift shop is a drying shed for herbs, as well as a greenhouse with an impressive array of plants.

While the restaurant and gift shop create the majority of the business side of Pickity Place, it is the surrounding gardens and other scenic expressions that offer an oasis that is often so hard to find in an amped up, fast-paced world. It is no wonder people stay for a while, and then some...

Red cap 9042 9043 on the front of Plane on the left are several trees and Little Red Riding Hood's house, on the right is a dense forest. Several flowers grow in the middle. In the background is a field and the edge of a forest.

                Narrator

                The dense forest sleeps sweetly
                On a pillow hill,
                A small house stands
                On its edge.
A girl lives in the house,
                And believe me, children,
What is more charming than her
                Not in the whole world.

Little Red Riding Hood comes out of the house and starts picking flowers after one.

                Storyteller

                And kind and cheerful,
                And pretty,
                And, although still small,
                She will always help everyone.
                Mother is proud of her
And does not have a soul.
                Well, grandmother misses her
                Every day.
                Although he lives nearby,
                On the other edge,
                But walking is not easy
An old woman through the forest.

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Sewed, sitting by the window,
She will renew it for me -
                Scarlet cloth cap
                With silk piping.

                Narrator

And since that time without her
                Little has not been seen.
                Little Red Riding Hood her
                Everyone called her for that.

Mom comes out of the house with a basket. Little Red Riding Hood throws the bouquet and runs up to her.

                Mother

I baked a pie for my grandmother with potatoes.
You go to her, my friend,
                Take the basket.

Mom hands the basket to Little Red Riding Hood.

                Mom

                Also take her
                Butter
                Ask better
                About her health.
                No news from her,
                I'm already worried.

                Little Red Riding Hood

I will collect a bouquet for her
A new one on the way!
                The bear's horror blossomed,
                Blue and brown!

                Mother

                Be careful, daughter!
                Stay on the path.

Little Red Riding Hood walks slowly towards the forest picking the remaining flowers along the way. Mom waves her hand and goes into the house.

                Narrator

We wouldn't have a fairy tale,
And there would be a point here,
                If mother's order
                Daughter didn't forget.
She was walking towards herself, and suddenly
                the Gray wolf met her.

Little Red Riding Hood approaches the forest. A wolf comes towards her.

                Wolf

                Hello, hello, dear friend!
                Are you far away?

                Little Red Riding Hood

                I'm going to my grandmother
And I bring her in a basket
                Butter for her
                Yes, a pie with potatoes.

                Wolf (aside)

                It's not easy to guess,
                Where the old woman lives.

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Yes, not far at all!
                On the other edge!

An ax is heard, one of the trees falls, and the wolf runs away. Little Red Riding Hood is also hiding in the forest. Little Red Riding Hood's house disappears.

                Narrator

A new friend would eat a crumb,
                But judge for yourself,
How to eat here when around
                They swing axes.
                And the cunning wolf decided
                to outwit the little one.

Little Red Riding Hood with a large bouquet comes out from behind the trees on the left. Right in front of her, a gray wolf with flowers appears and blocks her way.

                Wolf

                I can't understand something
Where are you in such a hurry?
                Even all your flowers
                can't compare to this.
But if you really want to,
                Then let's change!

Little Red Riding Hood throws her bouquet and takes the flowers from the Wolf. In the distance, the axes clatter again. The wolf looks around.

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Oh, how pretty they bloom!
                Petals with a heart!

                Wolf (quietly and insinuatingly)

                I know where they grow,
                I will indicate the place.
                Follow that path...

The wolf points to the trees on the left.

                Wolf

You will come out to the clearing.
                Yes, you're on the way,
                I won't see you off.

Little Red Riding Hood is hiding behind the trees on the left.

                Wolf

Well, let's see which of us
                gets there first.
An extra hour to go to the hut
                She'll have to go!

The Gray Wolf is hiding behind the trees on the right. As soon as he leaves, Grandma's house appears in front of the trees on the right.

                Narrator

                And the gray wolf rushed
                Along a straight path;
                Teeth clang: “Click! Click!”,
                Fur on the back.

The Gray Wolf appears from behind the trees on the left, breathing heavily and, looking around, sneaks to Grandmother's house.

                Storyteller

                Running, barely breathing,
                Creeped up to the house.
                Looked around slowly,
                Knocked on the door.

The wolf is knocking on the door.

                Wolf

                Knock! Here! Here!

                Grandmother appears in the window.

                Grandmother

                Who is there?

Wolf (imitating the voice of Little Red Riding Hood)

                That's me!
                Granddaughter in a red hat!
                Let me in,
                It's not safe here!
                I brought a pie,
                Butter pot!

                Grandmother

                Come in soon, my friend!
                Pull the string!

The wolf pulls the cord and rushes into the house. Grandma disappears in the window.

                Narrator

                Gray pulled on him,
                The door opened.

                The house begins to shake.

                Wolf

                Well, let's see who wins!

                Grandmother

                Oh, the trouble happened!
                Help!

Grandmother reappears at the window, but the wolf drags her back and appears at the window already wearing glasses and with a cap on her head.

                Wolf

                How I
                Had a nice lunch!
                I'll take a nap until
                has visited me for dinner!

The wolf puts his head on his paws and falls asleep, snoring from time to time.

                Storyteller

                Mining went on until dark
                By a roundabout path,
                And she was herself
                As always pleased.

Little Red Riding Hood appears from behind the trees on the left with a huge bouquet of flowers and goes to the house.

                Little Red Riding Hood (sings)

                I went along the path,
                I went, I went!
                And I found flowers,
                I found nice ones!

Little Red Riding Hood knocks on the door. The wolf stops snoring.

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Here! Here! Here!

Wolf (imitating the voice of the grandmother and yawning)

                Um-ha! Who's there?

                Little Red Riding Hood

                This is your granddaughter!
                Brought gifts to you:
                Butter for porridge
                Yes, a pie with potatoes!

                Wolf

                Come in soon!
                Pull the string, baby.
                I'm old, sick!

Little Red Riding Hood pulls the cord, enters the house, but immediately steps back, dropping the flowers and basket.

                Narrator

                Only her grandmother
                Has changed a lot.

The wolf also comes out and starts to approach her. The girl backs off.

                Wolf

                Hello, my child!
                Ali what happened?
                Hug you now!

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Don't be in a hurry!
                Hands, grandma, you have
                Very big!

                Wolf

                This is to hug,
                It was handy for me!
Tell me about the house, about the mother.
                Is everything all right?

Little Red Riding Hood retreats, the Wolf approaches.

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Oh! Tell me why
                you have such ears?

                Wolf

                All “why”, yes “why”!
                To listen to you!

Little Red Riding Hood retreats, the Wolf approaches.

                Wolf

                It's time to have supper
                Is it far to night?
You've been fooling me since morning
                !
Why are you sticking around here for an hour,
Like being sewn to a stump?

                Little Red Riding Hood

                You have very big eyes,
                Grandmother, big ones!
How they start to burn with fire,
                Goosebumps on the back!

Little Red Riding Hood retreats, the Wolf approaches.

                Wolf

                This is to see
                I need you, fool!

                Little Red Riding Hood

                Tell me why
                do you need such teeth?

                Wolf

                I'll eat you with them!
                Mincer teeth!

The wolf attacks the girl and eats her.

Wolf (hiccupping and stroking his belly)

                Fits, but with difficulty!
                Delicious what!
That's what will happen to those who enter the house
                Lets everyone in a row!
                I'll go back there,
I'll lie down at the threshold,
After all, there is never a lot of prey
                There is never much.
                Maybe someone else will come
                Visit an old lady.

The wolf returns to the house and looks out of the window.

                Narrator

                The wolf lurks and waits,
Looks at the edge of the forest.

                Wolf

An hour passed, and no one.
                Boring - no power!

                Narrator

                And from satiety
                He soon fell asleep.

The wolf begins to snore loudly.

                Narrator

And at that time a hunter was walking by.

A hunter comes out of the trees on the left with a gun on his shoulder and goes to the house.

                Okhotnik

                Above the neighbor's chimney
                I don't see any smoke.
Come on, I'll knock on the door,
                Pull on the string.

The hunter enters the house and immediately looks out of the window.

                Hunter (viewers)

Wolf! By God! I'm not kidding!
                Sleeps like an angel!

Several shots are heard. The wolf runs out of the house. Hunter for him.

                Hunter

                Damn! Right now
                I'll arrange for you.
I will shoot, like a squirrel, in the eye,
I will open my belly alive!

The wolf falls awkwardly. A hunter with a gun stands over him. The wolf pushes the gun away.

                Wolf

                Don't shoot! Not to blame!
                I suffer for nothing!
Me and a quarter of a hare, brother,
                I don't eat in a year!

                Grandma's Voice

                Help!

                Wolf (looking around)

                Who is screaming?

                Hunter (suspicious)

The voice of an old woman.
