Comprehension | Reading Rockets

Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to (1) decode what they read; (2) make connections between what they read and what they already know; and (3) think deeply about what they have read.

One big part of comprehension is having a sufficient vocabulary, or knowing the meanings of enough words. Readers who have strong comprehension are able to draw conclusions about what they read – what is important, what is a fact, what caused an event to happen, which characters are funny. Thus comprehension involves combining reading with thinking and reasoning.

Target the Problem: Comprehension

What the problem looks like

A kid's perspective: What this feels like to me

Children will usually express their frustration and difficulties in a general way, with statements like "I hate reading!" or "This is stupid!". But if they could, this is how kids might describe how comprehension difficulties in particular affect their reading:

  • It takes me so long to read something. It's hard to follow along with everything going on.
  • I didn't really get what that book was about.
  • Why did that character do that? I just don't get it!
  • I'm not sure what the most important parts of the book were.
  • I couldn't really create an image in my head of what was going on.

A parent's perspective: What I see at home

Here are some clues for parents that a child may have problems with comprehension:

  • She's not able to summarize a passage or a book.
  • He might be able to tell you what happened in a story, but can't explain why events went the way they did.
  • She can't explain what a character's thoughts or feelings might have been.
  • He doesn't link events in a book to similar events from another book or from real life.

A teacher's perspective: What I see in the classroom

Here are some clues for teachers that a student may have problems with comprehension:

  • He seems to focus on the "wrong" aspect of a passage; for example, he concentrates so much on the details that the main idea is lost.
  • She can tell the outcome of a story, but cannot explain why things turned out that way.
  • He does not go behind what is presented in a book to think about what might happen next or why characters took the action they did.
  • She brings up irrelevant information when trying to relate a passage to something in her own life.
  • He seems to have a weak vocabulary.
  • She cannot tell the clear, logical sequence of events in a story.
  • He does not pick out the key facts from informational text.
  • He cannot give you a "picture" of what's going on in a written passage; for example, what the characters look like or details of where the story takes place.

How to help

With the help of parents and teachers, kids can learn strategies to cope with comprehension problems that affect his or her reading. Below are some tips and specific things to do.

What kids can do to help themselves

  • Use outlines, maps, and notes when you read.
  • Make flash cards of key terms you might want to remember.
  • Read stories or passages in short sections and make sure you know what happened before you continue reading.
  • Ask yourself, "Does this make sense?" If it doesn't, reread the part that didn't make sense.
  • Read with a buddy. Stop every page or so and take turns summarizing what you've read.
  • Ask a parent or teacher to preview a book with you before you read it on your own.
  • As you read, try to form mental pictures or images that match the story.

What parents can do to help at home

  • Hold a conversation and discuss what your child has read. Ask your child probing questions about the book and connect the events to his or her own life. For example, say "I wonder why that girl did that?" or "How do you think he felt? Why?" and "So, what lesson can we learn here?".
  • Help your child make connections between what he or she reads and similar experiences he has felt, saw in a movie, or read in another book.
  • Help your child monitor his or her understanding. Teach her to continually ask herself whether she understands what she's reading.
  • Help your child go back to the text to support his or her answers.
  • Discuss the meanings of unknown words, both those he reads and those he hears.
  • Read material in short sections, making sure your child understands each step of the way.
  • Discuss what your child has learned from reading informational text such as a science or social studies book.

What teachers can do to help at school

  • As students read, ask them open-ended questions such as "Why did things happen that way?" or "What is the author trying to do here?" and "Why is this somewhat confusing?".
  • Teach students the structure of different types of reading material. For instance, narrative texts usually have a problem, a highpoint of action, and a resolution to the problem. Informational texts may describe, compare and contrast, or present a sequence of events.
  • Discuss the meaning of words as you go through the text. Target a few words for deeper teaching, really probing what those words mean and how they can be used.
  • Teach note-taking skills and summarizing strategies.
  • Use graphic organizers that help students break information down and keep tack of what they read.
  • Encourage students to use and revisit targeted vocabulary words.
  • Teach students to monitor their own understanding. Show them how, for example, to ask themselves "What's unclear here?" or "What information am I missing?" and "What else should the author be telling me?".
  • Teach children how to make predictions and how to summarize.

20 reading texts for children aged 5-6-7-8

A child who has learned to put sounds into syllables, syllables into words, and words into sentences needs to improve his reading skills through systematic training. But reading is a rather laborious and monotonous activity, and many children lose interest in it. Therefore, we offer texts of small size , the words in them are divided into syllables.

First read the work to the child yourself, and if it is long, you can read its beginning. This will interest the child. Then invite him to read the text. After each work, questions are given that help the child to understand what they have read and comprehend the basic information that they have learned from the text. After discussing the text, suggest reading it again.

Friday Readings: An excerpt from the book "Chinese Myths for Children"

Long ago, when the world was still very young, there was a stone on the side of a mountain. This mountain, called the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits, towered over a small island far to the west of the world inhabited by people. The stone was nothing special. It was not large, it was not covered with special moss and an amazing plant did not grow nearby, and for many thousands of years no one came to see it.

Years passed, centuries flew by. But at this time, our vast Universe, leisurely and patient, like a turtle, put into practice its secret plan.

She changed the seasons, when the stone either heated up under the scorching sun, then froze under snow and ice, she poured rains on the ground, washing away layer after layer of grains of sand that were indistinguishable to the eye, she drove winds along the earth that brushed the exfoliated grains of sand from its faces. Thus, in the infinity of time, the shape of the stone gradually changed and little by little its outlines began to resemble a monkey. And now the resemblance became so striking that the stone monkey had no choice but to miraculously turn into a living animal.

- Wow! cried the monkey, jumping for joy. - It's time to have some fun!

This is what the monkey began to do in those glorious and innocent times. Soon she met and became friends with other, ordinary monkeys that inhabited the island. She greedily ate fruits and nuts and jumped from one tree to another.

And fooled around in every possible way, inventing stupid jokes. And when she intended to rest, she could sleep for three whole days in a row.

It was clear from everything that this monkey was created for something more than just being an animal. One day, while climbing rocks near a waterfall, she decided to dive - just to enjoy a loud splash of water, and found herself in the space between a wall of roaring water and a sheer cliff, And there, in the darkness and dampness, she discovered something completely amazing - a cave full of flowers, in which stone houses stood in rows.

— It's heaven! the monkey laughed, jumping with delight. “I will call this place Falling Water Cave!”

Of course, she invited all the other monkeys to the cave and offered to settle there all together. They liked the new housing so much that they decided to choose this outstanding monkey as their king.

For several centuries in this small kingdom, everyone lived happily and carefree. But the day came when the Monkey King thought about the future and suddenly realized that he would certainly die. Then he sobbed bitterly and inconsolably, and the rest of the cave dwellers ended.

— Why are you so sad, lord? the other monkeys asked anxiously.

- Everything is just awful! Our fun games mean nothing! the Monkey King explained to them. “In the end, we all die, and only Mr. Yama, the lord of the Underworld, will have fun.

Then one of the monkeys told the king that some people discovered the secret of immortality and learned what to do in order NOT to die.

- Oh, your watermelon head! exclaimed the Monkey King. "Why didn't you tell your king about this before?" Well, nothing, you'll see, soon I will steal all their secrets from these people.

And on the same day the Monkey King began to build a raft, and having built it, set sail across the ocean to the world of people. There he wandered through the cities, villages and towns, asking everyone he met if they knew the secret of immortality. He could not find a single person who possessed this knowledge. It turned out that people were interested only in the most boring questions - for example, how much does a cup of rice cost or how to raise a fatter bull. The monkey decided that people, all without exception, are deafening fools.

Finally, after many years of searching, someone advised the monkey to visit an old hermit named Suboti, who lived in a cave. The monkey-king rushed there with all his might.

An old sage was sitting near a cave drinking tea.

Who are you? Subothi examined the Monkey from head to toe. "Who are you, pray tell?"

- I am the monkey king, old morel! And for a very long time I have been looking for someone more or less intelligent, who will answer me a very important question. Maybe you can? Well, tell me quickly what you need to do to live forever!

Suboti had lived for a very long time, but in all his long life he had never met such insolent people. However, he was wise enough to understand that the monkey is not entirely hopeless.

“Start learning with me,” he replied. And maybe you'll learn something.

At first, the monkey had to sweep the floor and make beds for other students. However, she worked so well and diligently that Subothi soon began teaching her the basics of sorcery. The monkey became very fast, very strong, and mastered the marvelous art of flying thousands of miles in any direction on a cloud. She learned secret magic words that allowed her to shapeshift into any of seventy-two forms, and learned a spell that allowed her to become as big as a mountain or as small as a cricket.

But, seizing upon new opportunities, the monkey ran into trouble. Out of envy, other students began to tease her and persuade her to show some funny trick. The monkey, yearning for carefree fun, fell for this trick and, with the help of spells, turned into a tall Christmas tree. Suboti heard the students laughing and became very furious‚

- Daring monkey! he shouted. “Do you think that I revealed these sacred secrets to you so that you could put on a show?” For this, I will NEVER reveal to you the secret of immortality, Get out!

And now, twenty years after the Monkey King left the Cave of Falling Water, he returned, shaking spruce needles from his furry skin.

This time, the journey took much less time, because the Monkey King still learned to fly on the cloud. However, upon his return, a far less solemn and warm welcome awaited him than he expected. Instead of having a holiday, feasting and fun, the subjects fled into the forest. They looked hungry and unhappy.

- Where have you been all these years? they lamented. “Our cave has been invaded by a three-headed monster—the Demon Destroyer. He is fatter than ten elephants and eats monkeys for breakfast!

- Well, well! exclaimed the Monkey King. “Let’s see if this demon likes it if a monkey cuffs him for dinner!”

With these words he went to the waterfall

— Hey, you despicable brat! he shouted so loudly that his voice was drowned out by the roar of the waterfall. "I need to discuss something with you!"

The Destroying Demon thrust its three heads through the curtain of falling water, and the Monkey King dealt a crushing blow to it.

This blow was so strong that one of the monster's heads flew off on Monday, the second on Tuesday, and the third rolled until Friday evening!

Even the Monkey King himself was surprised at his strength. But as soon as he thought about it, he immediately wanted more.

— What if I imagine that instead of fists I have some other weapon? he thought. “Then this whole demon would fly away next year!”

The Monkey King knew exactly where to go for weapons: the Dragon King's palace in the East Sea kept a lot of amazing things, including various weapons. So he went straight there.

The dragon king was peacefully drinking tea when someone started pounding on the gates of his palace with all his might.

— Some kind of monkey came there, and judging by its appearance, it's just a robber! the crab guard reported anxiously. This monkey is asking you to accept her, Your Majesty. Says she's a king.

- Is the monkey a king? the Dragon King asked, raising one beautiful eyebrow in surprise. - I wonder what kind of monkey it is, which looks like a robber. Okay, let him in!

— What do you hear, master? asked the Monkey King, entering the hall with an air of importance. He sat down in a chair, lounging like at home. The dragon king decided that he would ignore such a flagrant breach of etiquette.

— To what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you here, O monkey king? he asked politely.

But the monkey had already taken a full handful of sweets and was stuffing them into his mouth.

“Mmmm... I need a weapon to protect my people,” she explained, continuing to chew and slurp. “I ask you to do me a favor, you understand? Like a king to a king.

The leader of the dragons liked to make noble gestures, so he summoned ten adjutant eels and ordered them to bring the famous big sword, which weighed more than a ton. But the Monkey King waved it as if it were lighter than a feather. Throwing away his sword in disappointment, he said with a grin:

Too thin!

The dragon king turned pale with fear under his emerald scales.

“Yes, that monkey is indeed very dangerous,” he whispered under his breath.

— What about that thing over there? asked the intruder, pointing to the huge iron pillar that propped up the ceiling. This column, tall as a tree, stood exactly in the center of the hall.

Are you kidding? The Dragon King gasped. “This is the magical pillar that was used to crush the first stars forged for the Milky Way. It's too heavy to lift! She is iron!

- Seriously? exclaimed the Monkey King. He jumped up to the pillar and pulled it out of the floor as easily as if it were just a wand. - You are right about something, this column is not very suitable in size, it is too large.

At the same moment, the giant column began to shrink and shrink until it reached the size of an ordinary stick. The dragon king shuddered and turned completely green. “We need even less,” said the Monkey King. And the iron twig shrank even more, becoming no bigger than a match. The monkey put it behind his ear and exclaimed:

- What you need! That's what I call a new weapon! exclaimed the monkey king, grinning. “But, you know, master, I want to ask you one more thing.

The Dragon King did not dare to refuse. He gave the monkey everything she asked for. And he even ordered his dragon brothers to bring flying shoes, a hat with a phoenix feather and a golden chest shield.

Satisfied with the trophies, the Monkey King triumphantly returned to his subjects. That night, after a hearty festive dinner, he went to bed without undressing - of course, in the presented outfits.

He dreamed that he was roughly grabbed by two sullen demons. They tied him up and dragged his soul into the underground Land of the Dead, a terrible kingdom ruled by Lord Yama.

— Your time is up, dead monkey! they shouted. “Now you belong to Mr. Yama.

The Monkey King who remained in the real world was no longer breathing. But in the Land of the Dead, he was still alive and terribly angry. With lightning speed he pulled out an iron column from behind his ear and blew on it. As soon as the column reached the desired size, the monkey king brought it down on the heads of both demons and rushed to run. Demons rushed ahead in horror, trying to hide from the furry tyrant.

Annoyed by the disorder that disturbed the peace in the realm, Lord Yama sent ten judges of the Court of the Dead to intercept the monkey. All their attempts to calm her down were unsuccessful.

“You see, your name is in the Book of the Dead,” the judges tried to explain. So it's time for you to die. This cannot be disputed.

- Bring me that damned book! yelled the Monkey King. “Or you will have to try my iron stick on yourself!”

Seeing how the judges bowed respectfully before the monkey king, Mr. Yama had no choice but to hand over the Book of the Dead. The Monkey King flipped through it and found his name.

“Soul number three thousand one hundred and fifty,” he read aloud. This monkey died quietly, in his sleep! Ha ha ha! This one is easy to fix!

Grabbing a writing brush, he crossed out his name with one stroke. Then he waved the brush again and crossed out the names of all the other monkeys. So the Monkey-king managed to defeat death. His restless soul, returning to the Cave of Falling Water, entered the body, and it regained the ability to breathe. Now Lord Yama had no power over him or over his subjects - other monkeys. From now on, none of them could die.

Satisfied with the night's work, the Monkey King made his way out of the underworld, knocking off several thousand demons along the way.

And... woke up with a happy smile.

- Now we will live forever! he solemnly announced to his subjects.

But the other inhabitants of the universe did not feel so happy at all. The next morning, both the Dragon King and Lord Yama sent angry letters to the Jade Emperor, the ruler of Heaven and Earth. In these letters, they detailed all the antics of the monkey king.

— What is this terrible monkey? asked the Jade Emperor, who hated receiving bad news before breakfast. How could she have done so much mischief?

— Would you like to invite this monkey to live with us? We’ll give her some pointless work,” suggested the Emperor’s consort, the Heavenly Empress. “Then you can keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn’t cause more trouble.”

This thought pleased the Jade Emperor. He summoned the monkey king to heaven. He gladly accepted the invitation and appeared in the most elegant clothes.

— Finally, I'm getting the welcome I deserve! he rejoiced.

“I would like to entrust you with an important job,” the Emperor lied. "Do you want to be my horseman?"

The Monkey King readily agreed.

At first he really liked his new heavenly work. He made sure that the horses were well-fed, well-groomed and happy. But after two weeks, I began to think about the fact that it would be time to get paid for the work.

The Monkey King went to the guardians of the imperial treasury and found out that the work entrusted to him not only was not paid, but did not even have an appropriate name, since it was invented quite recently.

This did not please the monkey king. Gritting his teeth with rage, he began to rush back and forth through the heavens, breaking everything around. He crushed buildings, uprooted trees, broke dishes, and pieces of priceless porcelain rained down around him.

Various gods and immortal creatures tried to stop the enraged beast, but it was too strong. And he scattered in different directions everyone who tried to pacify him, and even those who tried to help them pacify him.

Are there any other crazy people who want to play with the monkey? he yelled, and the pile of broken and broken things kept growing and growing. “I am stronger than all of you!”

Now the Jade Emperor himself is worried in earnest. It seemed that it would not be possible to defeat the monkey king with the help of force alone.

“You can’t defeat him by force, try with cunning, use flattery,” the Heavenly Empress whispered.

At this point, the Jade Emperor was so desperate that he was ready for anything. He called loudly to the maddened monkey:

- O mighty Monkey King! he exclaimed. Maybe you want to get a better job? I just got one job vacant! Would you like a title like "Guardian of the Peach Orchard of Immortality"? This is a very important position.

— Will I get any title? the monkey king asked. - And preferably more important. Or I'll break it down...

“You can be called “Great Sage Equal to Heaven” if you like that title,” the Emperor said hurriedly.

“I like it,” the monkey king replied. - Because this is true.

Peace and tranquility reigned in Heaven for a time. The work of the monkey was very simple. Too simple, so she spent the whole day lounging in the garden, and at night she feasted with her friends. And, of course, she was very proud of the new title. There was only one problem: the peaches of immortality, ripening once every six thousand years, were starting to swell right now. Every day, the "caretaker of the garden" saw how the fruits were getting bigger and juicier, and dreamed that he could eat them.

Finally, the monkey king realized that he could not control his desires. He climbed a tree and began to eat peaches, and he ate them until the sweet thick juice ran down his chin and smeared the whole skin.

— Oh, they are so delicious, like moonlight and rainbows! the monkey king sighed and reached for a new peach‚
