5 Early Reading Activities

One of the challenges teachers face is teaching children to read early. This is a complex cognitive process that requires a lot of time, because reading includes the ability of various skills: phonemic hearing, acoustics (recognizing the relationship between letters and the sounds they make), understanding the meanings of words and the read text as a whole.

We have prepared exercises that will help facilitate and diversify the process of learning to read and attract the attention of children.

Word Families

Words that rhyme are easier to remember. With this in mind, start teaching children with consonant words. For example, if they know the word man , they will be able to read words like can, pan, fan , etc.

Before starting the lesson, choose words that rhyme: top, pop, stop, mop, hop . Show the first word, read it and ask them to repeat after you. Then let the children read the rest of the words themselves. Thus, students read with ease, as if substituting letters in a ready-made template.

This is a phonemic awareness skill that helps children see patterns in words and apply rules to groups of similar words.

Matching Pairs

There are several options for this exercise.

First option: Choose pairs of rhyming words and mix them up. Ask the children to match them, for example:

dark cap

look park

cat book

map hat

The second option will help in letter recognition and letter-sound association. Prepare pictures of the words you want to teach the children. You can use emoji instead of pictures. Also prepare the appropriate words. Shuffle them, ask them to match the pictures with the words and read them aloud. For example,

Third option: Choose 5-10 words and make two cards with each word. Lay them face down and have the children choose two cards and turn them over. The student reads the words, and if they match, he takes a pair for himself and continues to play. If the words of the chosen cards do not match, he puts them back, and the next player continues the game. If the children cannot say the word, read it for yourself and ask them to repeat it.

The purpose of the exercise is to develop automatic word recognition.

The game continues until all cards have matched. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

Sound Pictures

When children begin to voice words, they encounter difficulties in pronouncing certain letter combinations. To help them remember the rules, create a "table" of visualizations.

For example, the words tea and house. Show the children a large teapot with the words tea, and the sound it makes [i:] written on it. Also show a picture of a house with house and the sound [au]. Prepare words with the same sounds in advance: please, sea, read, clean, blouse, mouse , etc.

Source: twinkl.co.uk, netclipart.com

Show the children these pictures and word cards. Ask them to throw words with a similar sound into the kettle and “settle” words with the letter combination 9 into the house0011 or .

Search Word Bingo

One way to teach children to recognize words and read is to have the teacher read the text. Most often, children get bored, after 2-3 sentences they lose concentration and do not follow the text. To avoid this and make the process productive, create bingo lists.

From the text you are about to read, select the words and write them in separate squares on a piece of paper. Give the papers to the children and ask them to circle the words they hear. At the end, ask what words they found and ask them to read them. Another option is more like a traditional game: the children mark one row in advance and, after the teacher says all the words from the selected row, they shout “Bingo!”

The Whole-word Approach

Some words that are known as “sight words” do not follow reading rules. They cause difficulties in children at the initial stage of education. To help them remember the correct pronunciation of words, use pictures with the corresponding words. Prepare flashcards and show them to the children one by one. Say the word and ask them to repeat after you.

As you memorize, use them first in short and then in long sentences.

Choose a few sentences and add illustrations next to “sight words”.

Source: pinterest.com, theclassroomkey.com

This activity teaches "word-level" reading. Children practice pronunciation of words by recognizing their written form. “Sight-reading” also promotes rapid reading comprehension.

Teaching children to read, you need to remember that each of them has his own abilities. To achieve the result, first of all, it is necessary to help each child master the basic related skills, taking into account the characteristics of his perception and memory. Game tasks with bright illustrations and an element of competition are universal - try them in your classes!

And so, often come up with non-existent words. In order to create a book, we decided to make rhymes using pictures.
