Shabbat - STMEGI

Law of the Torah: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Work for six days and do all your work. And the seventh day is the Sabbath of your G-d, do not do any work, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maidservant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is in your house ”(Shemot 20: 8).

The holiness of the Sabbath is above all. The blessing of this day is better than all blessings.

Shabbat is the source of prosperity and success in all our affairs. Even crimes against the Creator and the Torah can be forgiven for those who observe and do not violate Shabbat.

Mitzvah Shabbat on the scales - like the entire Torah. There will be no deliverance for our people if we do not keep Shabbat. Everyone who observes Shabbat brings the coming of the Messiah closer.

Our people survived and passed through the millennia thanks to the fact that in all generations the Jews kept Shabbat.

Shabbat is a sign and symbol of the eternity of our people. The disturber of this day is regarded by the Torah as a non-Jew, as having renounced his Jewishness.

If all Jews - as one - could keep only one more Sabbath, Geula (liberation) would come.

Shabbat is the only day when the soul can rest.

Day after day, a person works and, of course, gets tired. Sleep is his rest. But even in sleep the soul does not rest. Shabbat is the only day when the soul can rest.

The Torah says: “Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever defiles it will be put to death. Whoever defiles it with work, his soul will be cut off from among his people” (Shemot 31:14). Whoever violates this holy day loses the right to exist as a Jew.

Shabbat is no ordinary day. Shabbat is a holiday. Therefore, we prepare for Shabbat in advance, clean the house, prepare special dishes, bathe, put on holiday clothes, just like the groom prepares to meet the bride.

The main activity on Shabbat is the study of the Torah. This is a day of rest, when they eat, drink, sing songs, go to visit and rejoice in the priceless gift of the Creator.

Shabbat begins at sunset, but women light candles and take it 20 minutes before sunset.

Men take Shabbat a few minutes before sunset when they recite "boi kala".

Lighting candles is one of the three main duties of a woman. But, if there is no woman in the house, the man should light the candles.

In the room where we will have a Shabbat meal, we light two candles in a conspicuous place, one means - remember Shabbat! Another - save Shabbat! The light of these candles brings peace and harmony to the family.

When lighting candles, say a blessing:

Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu meleh haolam asher kideshanu bemitsvotav vetsivanu lehadlik ner shel Shabbat.

translation:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light Shabbat candles.

On the eve of Saturday, which coincides with Yom-tov:

Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu meleh haolam asher kideshanu bemitsvotav vetsivanu ledlik ner schel Shabbat veyom tov.

translation:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light Shabbat and holiday candles.

After lighting the candles, the women say a short prayer:

May it please you, Lord, my God and the God of my fathers, to have pity on me (and my husband and my children) and all my relatives.
Fill our homes with all blessings; and let us raise our children and grandchildren with dignity, so that they are learned people who love you.

If you did not have time to light the candles before sunset, then the time has been lost, since from that moment a holiday has come and the Jews are already forbidden to light a fire.

EVENING KIDUSH

After the evening prayer, the whole family gathers around the table for the evening kiddush (Sabbath consecration).

The head of the family fills a glass with a capacity of at least 86 grams with wine or grape juice. It is desirable that the glass is intended only for kiddush and that it is without flaws. And says:

Yom hashishi. Vaihulu hashamayim vehaarets ve-hol tsevaam. Vaikhal Elo-him bayom hashvii mlahto asher asa vaishbot bayom hashvii mikol melahto asher asa vayvareh Elo-him et yom ha-shvii vaikadesh otoki wo shavat mikol melakhto asher bara Elo-him laasot.

translation:

Day six. And the heavens and the earth were completed, and all the host of them. And G-d completed on the seventh day His work, which He was engaged in; and rested on the seventh day from all his work in which he was engaged. And God blessed the Seventh Day and sanctified it, for it was a day of rest from all the work at the Creation of the World.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who created the fruit of the vine.
Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the Universe, who sanctified us with His commandments, and favored us, and gave us His holy Sabbath as an inheritance in memory of the Creation of the World - the first of the holy holidays, reminiscent of the Exodus from Egypt . For You chose us, and sanctified us among all nations, and gave us Your holy Sabbath, out of love and favor, as an inheritance.
Blessed are You, Lord, who sanctifies the Sabbath.

MORNING KIDUSH

After the morning prayer, the whole family gathers around the table for the morning kiddush.

The head of the family fills a glass with a capacity of at least 86 grams with wine or grape juice.

It is desirable that the glass is intended only for kiddush and that it is without flaws. And he says:

Im tashiv mi Shabbat ragleha asot hafatsekha beyom kodshi vekarata la Shabbat oneg likdosh Adonai mehubad ve hibadto measot derakheha mimtso heftsekha vedaber davar az tit'anag al Ado-nay vehirkavtiha al bamotey hafatsekha yaakhalatiha nahaakhaliha arts.

Al ken verah Ad-nay et yom ha-Shabbat ve-yekadshehu.

Savri maranan!

Baruch ata Ad-nai Elo-henu melekh haolam bore pari hagefen.

translation:

And let the children of Israel keep the Sabbath, making it a sign of union with God for all their generations. Between Me and the children of Israel, it is a sign and an eternal reminder that for six days the Lord created the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day did not perform any deeds and was at rest.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

SATURDAY MEALS

Immediately after kiddush, we begin the Shabbat meal (seuda).

There are three such seudots on Saturday: the first is the evening meal, the second is the morning meal, and the third is before sunset.

On the festive table, under a special napkin, two Shabbat challahs (lechem mishne) await us.

For all three meals, we prepare two challahs (in memory of the double portion of mana that fell to the Jews in the desert).

We do the washing of hands, netilat-yadaim and the host pronounces a blessing on the bread:

Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu meleh haolam hamotsi lehem min haaretz.

translation:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who makes bread grow from the earth.

Immediately after this, everyone should eat at least 30 grams of bread.

For the Sabbath meal, hot, tasty and varied dishes should be prepared, regardless of costs.

Mitzvah - pronounce "divre Torah", discuss the weekly chapter of the Torah. The meal ends with the reading of Birkat Hamazon.

EXODUS OF SATURDAY

The day has passed, it is evening, and with the release of the stars, Saturday leaves us.

The time of the end of the Sabbath (Eziat Shabbat) can be found in each Jewish calendar.

We read the evening prayer arvit (maariv), and get permission for everyday activities, and those who stay at home must say the words:

Baruchh hamavdil ben kodesh lehol.

translation:

Blessed is he who separates the holy from the everyday.

After that, you can perform all the work prohibited on Saturday. But you can’t eat until we have performed the ceremony of separating the holiday from everyday life, which is called avdala.

hAVDALA

Avdala is performed over wine or grape juice, and in their absence, it is possible over another strong drink or over other juice. Pour a full glass, preferably overflowing, light a candle, and put a box of besamim (incense) or an aromatic tree twig in front of you. The leader reads:

Kos yeshuot esa ubeshem Adonai ekra. Ana Ad-nai hoshia na ana Ad-nai hatsliha na hatslihenu hatsliah derakhenu hatsliah limudenu ushlah beraha verevaha vehatslaha behol maase yadenu kadihtiv: isa veraha meet Ad-nay utsdaka me-Elo-he isho. Laihudim haita ora wasimha wasason vikar.

Savri maranan!

Baruch ata Ad-nai Elo-henu melech haolam bore pari hagefen.
Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu meleh haolam bore mineh vesamim.
Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu meleh haolam bore meore haesh.
Baruch ata Ad-nay Elo-henu melech haolam hamawdil ben kodesh lehol uven OR lekhosheh uven yisrael leamim uvey om hashishi lesheshet yeme hamaase.
Baruch ata Ad-nay hamavdil ben kodesh lehol.

translation:

I will raise the cup for salvation and call on the Name of the Lord. Behold, G-d is my Salvation: I trust in Him and fear not, for from G-d is my strength and my song, from Him is salvation.
Draw, rejoicing, water from the fountains of salvation! Salvation is from the Lord, an everlasting blessing to His people. the Lord of Hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold forever. Lord of Hosts, happy is the man who trusts in You! Lord, save, King, answer us on the day when we cry out to You! And the Jews had light, and joy, and rejoicing, and dignity - this is exactly how it will be with us.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who created the fruit of the vine.
Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who created fragrant substances.
Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who created the light of the flame.
Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, King of the Universe, who separated the holy from the everyday, light from darkness, Israel from other nations, The seventh day from six working days. Blessed are You, Lord, who separated the holy from the everyday! 9

Introduction

Paul (singing): Please lock me away…[1]

John: Yes, great. End of song.

The conversation that changed my life.

I grew up in a musical family, so in some ways my attraction to the world of music and recording is not surprising. My father was an amateur pianist, a passionate admirer of Gilbert and Sullivan[2], and an eminent physician, my mother a professor and oboe teacher at the Royal Academy of Music; she played in various major orchestras and gave oboe lessons at home. While my sisters and I were growing up, there was always music playing in our house at 57 Wimpole Street, on the corner of New Cavendish Street in central London.

By the age of fourteen or fifteen I was taking not only piano lessons, but also some oboe and double bass lessons. However, despite my great love for music, my terrible laziness prevented me from achieving any real results. I loved my parents' music—and I still enjoy listening to Corelli's oboe concerto or Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta—but all the non-classical music I heard from American sources became my passion. I loved bebop[4] by Charlie Parker and his contemporaries and modern jazz of all kinds, and ended up amassing an extensive record collection. I loved the folk music of Woody Guthrie[5], Cisco Houston[6], Leadbelly[7], Sonny Terry[8] and Brownie McGee[9]] - and went to Dobell's Record Shop on Charing Cross Road to buy what I now understand must have been a bootleg original phonograph record of all this wonderful music. I loved R&B and blues. My curiosity about America itself (a wonderful land of abundance, both material and artistic, as it seemed to us) was comparable only to my love for its music. Thanks to her, I picked up my first guitar and learned a few chords.

Gordon Waller, my friend, we met at Westminster School in London - he liked almost the same music and knew much more chords than I did. We started singing together, playing in pubs, clubs and coffee houses, calling ourselves (it sounds weird now) Gordon & Peter. We ended up having a swanky party late at night at a drinking establishment called Pickwick. While we were playing, a man in a very shiny suit came up to us, introduced himself as Norman Newell, manager of A&R [11] EMI Records, and asked if we would come to the audition at EMI's studios on Abbey Road in London's St. John's Wood. We were thrilled to death. A few days later we went there, recorded some songs and waited for the results. Luckily and joyfully, they offered us a contract. Of course, we signed it.

Norman booked some studio musicians and booked a second studio at EMI for a date that was set about a month later. He discussed with us what songs we should record. Picked up a few songs we played at Pickwick and talked to a couple of writers. He also said: “Listen, if you know of any other good tracks that could be suitable for you to suggest and record, please let me know. We are interested in your songs that you already play, but also in new songs and new authors. By the way, we're changing your name to Peter & Gordon because we think it sounds better." Who am I to complain?

Me and my sister Jane

This is where coincidence played a significant role in our story. I had (and I'm happy to say still have) two very beautiful sisters, Jane and Claire. Jane, two years younger than me and two years older than Claire, was already a very successful actress in Britain, well known and admired to this day. And just as a celebrity who loves music, she was asked to go see a new band that made all the girls squeal. A band that just arrived from Liverpool and got their first hit. Radio Times magazine invited Jane to visit their performance in London, write a review and try to understand what all the fuss is about. She was delighted with the offer; she had never seen The Beatles, but she read a lot about them, like the rest of us.

Jane was very impressed. She thought the music was fantastic, and when she met them later, found them charming, witty and calm, she liked them very much. She liked them too; one of them is so cute that he asked Jane out on a date. That's how she started dating Paul McCartney, their relationship lasted several years. And one of the "side effects" was that Paul was constantly hanging around our house.

In the end, his parents took pity on him and offered him a guest room on the top floor of the house, next to my bedroom. Paul moved out and we lived on the top floor of my parent's house for a couple of years. During this time, I was lucky to hear several songs that he wrote, and one of them was called A World Without Love. I only heard a snippet and immediately told Paul that it sounded very good. But The Beatles were not going to record it. It seemed to them that this was a little not their story. (Later I found out that John didn't like the first line: "Please lock me up.")
