12 words in which you constantly double the consonants. And very in vain!

There are words that, by their very appearance, beg us for a double consonant. And we are trustingly leading. So that no one else dares to convict you of illiteracy and cheat you - memorize the spelling, and then take our difficult test on the same topic.

Correct: Applause

You also need to clap your hands correctly, especially if you do it in writing. And in the age of chats, this is most often the case. "Applause" is a dictionary word, which means that it does not obey any reasonable rules. Although the error here did not arise from scratch. In French, where the word came from, there are several pairs of double consonants at once - applaudissement. So either you know French or English well (it's applause there), or you skipped vocabulary words in class at school.

Correct: Zucchini

Answering the main vegetable question: zucchini is a type of zucchini, only usually smaller in size, and its skin is darker. Both of these "guys" belong to the gourd family, and there are no double consonants in their name, even if the original language (from Italian zucchini) is misleading. By the way, it’s better not to check spelling on Wikipedia: on the personal page of zucchini, they couldn’t decide on a single spelling (pay attention to the caption to the photo) and gave all possible options.

Correct: Offline event

Some bank or alcoholic drink can afford a double consonant in a brand name. Although the Russian language rarely tolerates such things and fines all foreigners by one double consonant. "Offline" is an anglicism spelled with the negative particle off. For the Russian language, the loss of a consonant letter is quite typical for borrowings. And although the outdated spelling with two "f" is still common, the modern spelling norm is one - "offline".

Correct: Offshore

Let's move on to serious financial terms that you might come across in the news. Offshore organizations are those companies that are NOT registered in the country of residence of the business owner. All for profit! But let's leave the lesson of economics for another time. The word "offshore" is subject to the same rules as "offline": in the original it was offshore, and when it was transferred to the Russian language it became "offshore". Minus one letter "F". The mistake is very common: more than one and a half million results for the query "offshore" in Google against almost the same number for the word "offshore".

Correct: Telegram, Instagram

If you are an active blogger (with one letter "g"), then you should not be mistaken in the names of these social networks. A telegram is an urgent message transmitted by telegraph, which used to be sent instead of SMS on special occasions. And Telegram is a messenger, another brainchild of Pasha Durov. Everything would be fine, but there are lovers of doubling the consonant at the end: "Telegram", "Instagram". Although there is no reason for this. Telegram and Instagram are written in the original, where, apparently, there are no doublings.

Correct: Puzzles

Favored by mistakes among board games. Puzzles, or, as they are called in Russia, "mosaics", do not need a second "z". The confusion, as always, arises from the etymology of the word. As you understand, in the Russian language, when switching from the source language, one of the doubled consonants often disappears. Office became office and jazz became jazz. Puzzles originated from the English puzzle, but in Russian the double "z" is atypical. There is only one correct option: puzzles.

Correct: Leggings

If you already call your favorite leggings leggings, then remember the correct number of consonants. Leggings (leggings) are also translated from English as leggings, but more often the word is used to refer to "women's tight-fitting pants." Well, the difference is not only in meaning, but also in the number of ill-fated consonants. In English there are many of them, in Russian they are all one at a time: leggings. And if the built-in spelling corrector underlines the word in red, don't believe it. It's just that you are smarter than him now!

Correct: Ice cream, cake

Sometimes the dessert "ice cream" imperceptibly and unreasonably turns into a participle or an adjective. In our case, "ice cream" is a noun that is formed from the verb "freeze" in the imperfect form, and one "n" is always written here. The appearance of "nn" is possible only if the verb "freeze" turns into an adjective with dependent words or a participle. For example, frozen yogurt.

There is another problem with "cake". Many people strive to call it "pie". But this noun is formed from the adjective "cake", which, in turn, is formed from "pie" with the help of a suffix, and therefore the letter "e" simply cannot be in the basis of the word.

Correct: Length

Paradox: long, but length. In order not to make a mistake, always think which part of speech is in front of you: a noun or an adjective. If a noun means “length”, if you turn a noun (with the same stem on “H”) into an adjective, add another letter “H” (“long”). And don't confuse one with the other anymore.

Correct: Chicken soup

A rule directly related to word formation. Adjectives formed using the suffixes -in-, an-, -yan- are written with one "H": chicken, pigeon, silver, leather. If the adjective is formed from a noun based on "H" (length - long, million - millionth), then we already boldly write two "НН". Remember?
