The most well-known alphabet song, “The Alphabet Song,” was published in 1881 by Louis Le Maire. The tune was derived from “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep.” The song became a hit in America and is still sung by children today.

Now let’s take a look at the benefits of alphabet songs!

Benefits of ABC Songs for Kids

There are many reasons why ABC songs are essential. We have listed a few of the benefits below:

1. Increase Phonemic Awareness

Alphabet songs help increase children’s phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken language. By singing ABC songs, children are exposed to the different sounds of each letter which will help them when they begin to read and write.

2. Improve Literacy Skills

ABC songs can also help improve a child’s literacy skills. When children sing alphabet songs, they use their listening, speaking, and motor skills. By using all of these skills together, children are better able to remember the alphabet and how to read and write words.

3. Foster a Love of Learning

Alphabet songs can help foster a love of learning in children. When children are exposed to fun and engaging activities, they are more likely to want to know more. ABC songs are a great way to introduce children to reading and writing in a fun and exciting way.

4. Build Confidence

Singing alphabet songs can also help build children’s confidence. When children can successfully sing along to an ABC song, they feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. This boost in confidence can encourage children to continue to learn and grow.

5. Enhance Memory and Recall

Alphabet songs can also help enhance children’s memory and recall. When children sing alphabet songs, they are exposed to the same information multiple times. This repetition will help children remember the alphabet and be able to retrieve the information when they need it.

6. Develop Fine Motor Skills

ABC songs for kids can also help develop children’s fine motor skills. When children sing alphabet songs, they can use their hands and fingers to make the shapes of the letters. This helps develop the small muscles in the hands and fingers, which is vital for writing.

7. Aid in Speech Development

Speech development is another benefit of alphabet songs. When children sing alphabet songs, they use their mouths to make the sounds of the letters. This helps children learn how to form the different sounds of speech.

8. Improve Rhyming Skills

Alphabet songs can also help improve children’s rhyming skills. When children sing ABC songs, they are exposed to words that rhyme. This helps children learn how to identify words that rhyme and produce verses of their own.

9. Encourage Creativity

One of the best things about alphabet songs is that they help encourage creativity in young children. As they sing along, kids can develop their hand motions or dance moves to go along with the song. This type of creative expression is essential for cognitive and social development.

10. Promote Language Development

Singing alphabet songs is a great way to promote language development in young children. The songs’ repetitive nature helps children learn new words and concepts. Additionally, singing songs is a great way to build phonemic awareness – an essential precursor to reading.

"A rare artist lives in harmony with what is happening" - Kommersant FM - Kommersant

The legendary group "Piknik" has started a large-scale tour "Azbuka Morse" in the cities of Russia and other countries. The music columnist for Kommersant FM, Daria Gorstkina, spoke with the leader of the group, Edmund Shklyarsky.

Photo: Ilya Pitalev, Kommersant / buy photo

— We have been waiting for you for a very long time, you have such a tight tour, we tried to coordinate our meeting somehow. Let's probably start with the main thing, that is, with the tour. We announced the tour "Azbuka Morse" as your first tour dedicated to the release of the single. Is this really so, and why did the first song give impetus to a whole large concert program?

E. Sh.: The point is that the program has to be named somehow. By this time, we had a song called "Morse code", and we decided to modify the entire program under this name. We have a large printed circuit board on stage, in which the screen is mounted, then the Morse apparatus itself.

— Do you knock something on it during a concert?

E.Sh.: Of course, he makes sounds, that is, all the objects that we have on the stage are not fake, and besides, they have their own voice and perform some specific functions.

- That is, how are the tools used?

E.Sh.: Yes, in the song "Morse code", it is used as an instrument, besides, we made another new man-made instrument with one string, so it's quite easy to play it.

— What does it look like, what kind of instrument is it?

E.Sh.: How to say, here the artist Leo Hao realized this technical idea of his, there are fragments of clock mechanisms, and some other printed circuit boards, such a metal tool.

- And there is one string that is used just in this song?

E.Sh.: No, it's in another song - "Not Finding Doubles for Yourself", because it would be too much for one song.

- Does the song "Morse code" sound in one version? I saw that there are several options on your album, yes?

E.Sh.: Yes, there is a so-called heavy keyboard version of "Alisa", and he also made a so-called dance version.

— Only the first one is played at the concert?

E.Sh.: No, the original one sounds at the concert.

— What cities have you already visited with this tour, and what else is planned?

E.Sh.: The worst thing is when a new program ends up in, say, Moscow or St. Petersburg, because these are usually large productions, and we do not have time to remove any rough edges that arise. This year, fortunately, we already had several concerts before the premiere of big staged concerts, so we managed to run something around. Now we are at the beginning of the journey, we are waiting for about 100 concerts, so now is just the beginning. We went to school, if I may say so, as schoolchildren say.

- 100 concerts - it must be a very long time, right?

E.Sh.: Until May. We have such as the collective farmers, the harvest is going on.

- Five-year plan in a few months.

E.Sh.: Yes, in a few months.

- I know that in addition to concerts dedicated to the release of a new song and a new program in general, you also manage to participate as a guest in group concerts, today is the second one. You were last week at the anniversary of the group "Nautilus Pompilius". What did you perform there? I remember that there was "Nau Boom", a big project of the group "Nautilus Pompilius", you also recorded one song there, was it played at the concert last time?

E.Sh.: Yes, and now, that means.

- "Gentle Vampire" if I'm not mistaken.

E. Sh.: Yes, "Vampire", but now we have learned and played the song in our own way, it's called "View from the Screen", but for me it was always "Alain Delon", that is, it just turns out, it's called "Screen View". This is the song we played.

— You are visiting the Kukryniksy group, they are 15 years old. And what will you do there?

E.Sh.: There we will perform their song "Carnival" and our song "Troubled Days", which they played at our anniversary concert.

— Speaking of "Nautilus Pompilius" I remembered: did you often take part in some kind of tribute projects, did you perform songs of your friends, musicians-colleagues?

E.Sh.: Not really, in principle.

- That is, some isolated cases?

E.Sh.: This is "Kino" and here is "Nautilus".

— What was the project with Kino?

E.Sh.: "Aluminum cucumbers" there.

— Yes, it's also a great song. Today you immediately, it turns out, are going to perform from our studio?

E. Sh.: To speak, yes, I thought that you already want to look further.

— As far as I remember, you constantly use some new technologies in your work, new instruments, and you were almost among the first in Russia who started using electronic technologies, electronic music. You continue, as I understand it, to work with it. Tell me how much it helps in the work, how much it hinders, how do the listeners generally perceive such constant changes?

E.Sh.: They are happy about this, because this is what the new program is all about, that apart from new songs, if I may say so, it should be pleasing to the eye, that is, be different, differently designed, because otherwise you won’t distinguish one program from another. That is, the clothes of the musicians should also be different, because, for example, if you take some photographs and there is no entourage, you will not understand what kind of concert you are at. And so you remember that it was a concert there or there. And if there was just some standard formal black back or something like that, it would be impossible to distinguish one concert from another simply.

— As for the electronic sound, my colleagues and I discussed your work and thought about why it is difficult to imagine that some guys would play the songs of the "Piknik" group somehow in the yard or by the fire with a guitar. That is, there is no such element of nationality, when any song can be very easily arranged and performed in three chords. Was this done on purpose to make it so complicated, or is it just that?

E.Sh.: No, some songs, oddly enough, someone told me, are sometimes performed somewhere in transitions. The song "Night" was not difficult enough to play. There are, oddly enough, songs on three chords.

— That is, they still sound?

E.Sh.: Yes, but there was no such task that it instantly went to the people. Because, for example, I can’t play all the songs of my favorite artists right away.

— What are your favorite artists, by the way? Who do you sing yourself when you meet friends at the table?

E.Sh.: You know, speaking of songs, we sang only Russian folk songs.

- Directly to the guitar or to the accompaniment?

E.Sh.: With the guitar, of course, "Horses go to the watering place", well, maybe it's not a Russian folk song, "Oh, frost, frost", "Black Raven" and so on. By the way, we have such a disc, where folk songs are recorded.

- You, if I'm not mistaken, performed with the Cossack choir at the "Invasion"? Tell us, what was the experience like, how easy was it to get along with them, how did the rehearsals go in general? If they were.

E.Sh.: We instantly found a common language, since our bass player Marat Korchemny is from the city of Lipetsk, and this choir was just from their region, and he knew the leader of this group, so there were no language barriers. Rehearsals were first on the Internet, because now it's all working out. They were sent, they still sang, in my opinion, the song "The shaman has three hands."

— Did you change your experience: so that not the "Piknik" group sang Cossack songs, but that the Cossack choir sang the songs of the "Piknik" group, after all, was it?

E.Sh.: Yes, that is, there was such a joint overflow, well, in several other cities that were not far from their territorial residence, that is, in Lipetsk, Voronezh. They came to us, and at the end of our performance, we also sang songs together.

- I remember there was a scandal with the Kubana festival, when they wanted to close it and said that it was all immoral, what was happening there, and the bands that came behaved somehow ugly, and instead they wanted the festival there hold a certain festival of Cossack songs. That is, it turned out that they somehow contrasted what was happening on the Kubana, and part, perhaps, of what was happening on the "Invasion", Cossack music. Now I am listening to you and I understand that such things should not, probably, be opposed, they can be combined.

E.Sh.: No, you can oppose anything, a computer and a hammer, and therefore it is still unknown who will win whom, therefore it is better not to start such oppositions at all. This is a completely different music, that is, it can touch.

— By the way, another story happened with Kubana. You must have heard?

E.Sh.: You know, I haven't heard anything.

— There was also a very loud story with the Russian flag. Haven't heard anything about her? The members of the Bloodhound Gang, which was supposed to come to Kubana as one of the headliners, behaved very ugly with the Russian flag during their concert in Ukraine, using it for other purposes at all. How do you feel about this story? There, the organizer of the festival immediately said: "No, we don't want to see you anymore, please leave." All of us were very actively indignant about this. Do you think that this is still some element of art, an element of a stage image, or are there some edges, are there limits beyond which musicians cannot go on stage?

E. Sh.: You see, for me, after all, art is what is done by labor, and not by something else, because, I remember, someone said that modern art, it is modern, that is, it is being done now, but this does not mean that it is art, that is, what is called art. Therefore, there are some limits in any business, that is, what is appropriate.

— Do you think these limits for people who come on tour from other countries to us differ from the limits in which Russian musicians are?

E.Sh.: I remember recently watching a film about the Rolling Stones, they also tried something, or someone was hiding there with some kind of flag, and they were beaten, that is, they were there with difficulty took off their feet.

— But it wasn't all in Russia?

E.Sh.: It was abroad, yes. Therefore, the reaction of people is unambiguous, that is, here is the flag, it is not implied that this is some kind of object for such blackmail, if you can say, that is, to evoke some emotions, therefore nothing has changed since those times, and the reaction is completely, it seems to me, adequate and normal.

— That is, it was not shocking, but an insult?

E.Sh.: Outrageous outrageous discord, again. If you, say, made yourself some kind of costume or some kind of interesting show, this can be called outrageous, but if you, excuse me, pee on stage, this is a cheap trick, and what could be simpler than that?

DG: "Anti-piracy law", Edmund, we wanted to discuss this topic with you, because, as it seems to me, there are two such parallel processes going on in Russia now: on the one hand, there are copyright holders who talk about that some intellectual property needs to be protected. In particular, we are talking about songs, films, some audiovisual files, at the same time, a number of musicians say that, in general, "we are already ready to publish our music on the Internet for free and are ready to give listeners the opportunity not to buy, and download just like that, we see them at concerts, we get some kind of income from this. What do you think, which of these is more acceptable, which is correct, which point of view do you rather agree with?

E. Sh.: Everyone has their own idea about this issue, but there is some kind of given, and the given is such that all the music and everything that happens is laid out on the Internet, so it's even strange to discuss it. It is already there. Our music, like the music of other artists, lives its own life. Firstly, the first musical information in general, let's say, about "Picnic", took place just, let's say, probably, by piracy. Then the recording studios rewrote the once recorded album.

DG: So you have a good attitude towards pirates, they even helped you, right?

E.Sh.: In this case, yes, they spread information by word of mouth, one might say, in the cities of our country.

DG: But now the situation is a bit different. You say, in any case, it exists, but it’s one thing when it exists without the knowledge of the musician and against the will of the musician, on the other hand, when the performers immediately say that “we don’t need to steal anything from us, we ourselves will give everything, please, everything there is". What do you think, maybe it's time for all the listeners to give their music?

E.Sh.: I don't understand how to give it, if it's there, it's already been given. How can we give back a second time?

DG: There are performers who are very tough, they say that "no, if something got on the Internet, we have to take it."

E.Sh.: Let them take it away, let them go from house to house with an axe.

DG: This is what we are talking about now, there is such a bill.

E.Sh.: So they can walk, who doesn't let them? Let them walk around, beat computers, block, gnaw through wires. It seems to me that this is, in a sense, a fight against windmills. Also, say, if you want to sell something, provide a range of options.

DG: So you have to show what is ready first?

E.Sh.: Yes, and where can I get it. For example, I want to watch a movie. Where can I find it? Nowhere. If it is not in a normal elementary sale, say, and I am a law-abiding user, where can I actually find it?

DG: They suggest that all this can be downloaded on the Internet for money with the permission of the copyright holder.

E.Sh.: And if this is not enough for me, for example? Where can I find what I need? Maybe they want to sell themselves, but the rest does not interest them. And, by the way, there was such a period when in the stalls, the same "pirates" represented the entire spectrum of music, and the publishing companies gave only those they publish, and then, in general, the musical spectrum would have consisted of maybe 90 items, and it should consist of thousands.

DG: Now we are talking about the fact that at that time the pirates really somehow supported the musicians, and they acted in the interests of those who were not officially published. And now the deputies, who are actively lobbying this bill, say that everything is not being done in the interests of the musicians.

E.Sh.: How do they know in whose interests, in general? What are my interests? I have such interests, for example, that first you need to provide a store, open a store where all this is, and then close something.

DG: There is another trend that some of your colleagues have joined, crowdfunding.

E.Sh.: Is that decent?

DG: It's absolutely decent. I don't know, by the way, in your opinion, it's decent or not. Crowdfunding is when musicians or some other artists, let's say, collect money for the release, for example, of their next record, or some kind of tour, or a new film from their listeners or viewers. There are several different sites, platforms on the Internet where there is an announcement that, for example, the Piknik group wants to release the next record, please help. And he sells his CDs, some albums, some paraphernalia, maybe T-shirts, autographs, and listeners transfer some funds to their account, from the minimum to the maximum, you can choose it yourself. Thus, money is being accumulated for the release of the album. You have never resorted to this, are you going to?

E.Sh.: No, we even resorted to it. I didn't know that this story was called that. On the Planeta.ru website, there was just a new program with the participation of our listeners, our viewers who go to concerts.

DG: Did they respond quickly?

E.Sh.: Fast, yes.

DG: So, are you ready to pay?

E.Sh.: Yes. It was in reserved times that David Bowie became the first businessman, he issued shares, it was in its purest form a joint-stock company, which may have burst, not burst, but it felt good. As for the rest, I don't know. In this case, it's a slightly different story.

Returning to our group, to our surprise, there were some transfers, for example, from Vilnius, where it seems that a person does not even know Russian, but he simply transferred some large amount of money for no one knows what and why, and on what grounds.

DG: Maybe for the music?

E.Sh.: On what basis, I would like to ask. It is clear when it is a Russian-language, so to speak, history, and when it happens from distant shores, it causes some kind of surprise.

DG: By the way, I also wanted to talk to you about distant shores: do you often travel outside the CIS on some tours, where do you go, where are they waiting for you?

E.Sh.: We perceive it as musical tourism, that is, at the same time to see the country, at the same time to play. Such trips happen, but we still find ourselves there. Last year we were in America, in Canada, we still find ourselves in the circle of our former residents, so to speak. Sometimes they come with members of their family who are already local, so to speak.

DG: In other words, you are not so familiar with the Russian language, with some kind of Russian history and culture?

E.Sh.: No, locals, let's say, someone got married or got married, and they come together.

DG: How do they perceive music there? Somehow different than here?

E.Sh.: It's a little different, because they do it for nostalgic reasons. That is, it seems to me that sometimes just a Russian-speaking audience comes to see a Russian group.

DG: Just for a Russian band?

E.Sh.: I think sometimes yes, so there is nothing surprising, if I lived somewhere there, I would also go so as not to forget the language, and, in general, to look at like-minded people .

DG: There is no desire somehow more, perhaps, to focus on the Western market, to try to enter there somehow?

E.Sh.: In space, rather, in space, you can buy a ticket, and, say, a spacesuit.

DG: There are already the first inhabitants there, it seems to me, from among the musicians of .

E.Sh.: There are, yes, pioneers, so they don't really need any outside music. They came up with all this, and for them, probably, in general, it will be wild.

DG: Now I would like to discuss such a topic, which we conventionally call "propaganda of everything." Let's start with music. If I am not mistaken, you once had a not very pleasant story connected with this song, it was forbidden, they did not want to let you go anywhere with concerts. Is this true, or are we confusing something?

E.Sh.: We then return to the concept of "campaigns". Now there is an anti-piracy campaign, and then there was a campaign against amateur authors. And since many groups, including "Piknik", consisted of just those very amateur authors who took away part of the pie from those who were already members of the Union of Composers, those who were interested in this took care of it. They decided to cut off the oxygen to amateur authors. There were a lot of articles, and for some reason, one of the targets was "Picnic", which played into our hands, because at that time advertising, especially when you were scolded, meant a lot.

DG: So it wasn't the theme of the song or the lyrics that confused you, it was the money that confused you?

E.Sh.: Money confused me.

DG: The fact is that now there is some kind of new wave of laws regarding prohibitions, against smoking the law is a law, against propaganda of drugs, propaganda of non-traditional relationships. Our deputies strive to make sure that in films, in music, probably, too, in cartoons, there is less of all this. How do you feel about this? In your opinion, is it possible to control it and somehow it needs to be streamlined?

E.Sh.: It is probably better to control the street than, say, works of art, if they fall under this name, in any form: in painting or books. Therefore, I have such an opinion: life must be controlled, because, one way or another, art is its reflection. I remember some old Soviet films, they even smoked in the carriage compartments, which, of course, is not very good.

DG: Yes, everyone smoked a lot.

E.Sh.: But, nevertheless, everyone smoked, because a non-smoker was some kind of "subhuman".

DG: Now they are trying to move away from this, apparently. Regarding drugs, there was also a not very pleasant story with your fellow musicians recently, connected with the Infected Mushroom concert in Moscow. This concert was interrupted literally after three songs, special forces, the Federal Drug Control Service, the Federal Service for Combating and Controlling Drugs entered the stage, and they interrupted the performance of the musicians, asked them to leave the stage, and said that they had a raid going on there, that is information that in the club where the concert took place, they sell drugs. After that, the audience was examined, someone was arrested, but the concert was not allowed to continue, they said, that's it, in general, the performance is over. I would like to understand how you think this is normal?

E.Sh.: There are times. By the way, they were in the same Leningrad rock club when they were looking for the audience, to be honest, I don’t even remember what, maybe a drink, maybe something else. Then the concerts also stopped for some reason, because someone wanted the audience not to get up, but to sit. As a result, some kind of terrible story happened, someone was taken away there again. It seems to me that there is no time for everything to be calm, without some such excesses and incomprehensible actions.

DG: So the musicians, by and large, are okay with the fact that you stand on the stage, sing, and suddenly the special forces come?

E.Sh.: There is nothing good in that. But this has happened before, and since there is now, then, of course, it is always better to let the concert finish.

DG: Do you think all these stories are different, about the flag, about the Federal Drug Control Service, plus older ones that we all remember too, about the trials with Madonna and Lady Gaga, because they are also promoting something here non-traditional relationships, as some people think, what role will they play in organizing tours of foreign artists in Russia? Do you think they will stop coming to us, or will they still come?

E.Sh.: First of all, if they don't come here, then they can go there.

DG: After all, not everyone has such an opportunity.

E.Sh.: By the way, tickets are cheaper there than if you watch them here. Therefore, many, say, from St. Petersburg travel to Finland for concerts of the same performers. I don't think it will affect anything, to be honest.

DG: So the way out is to go somewhere abroad?

E.Sh.: No, no way out, I'm saying it won't affect these stories in general. For example, we will never see many performers, for example, Stevie Wonder, for a completely different reason: because he does not want to go anywhere. We will never see any other performers. But this is not connected, it seems to me, with any politics, with anything, just a person does not want to travel far.

DG: And why do you say: "Not related to politics", but there were also examples when the musicians were some kind of foreign ones, for example, guitarist Mark Knopfler immediately announced that he would not go anywhere, because he does not like what is happening in Russia.

E.Sh.: You know, we don't fully know what's going on.

DG: But he said so.

E.Sh.: For example, we declare to these same organizers that we will not go for one reason or another. But, for example, the listeners are not to blame for this, but the organizers are to blame, or some other moment. When we had the Obscurantism and Jazz tour in some cities, some powers that be forbade the hanging of these posters.

DG: What was so terrible there?

E.Sh.: Title.

DG: Obscurantism?

E. Sh.: Obscurantism and Jazz. They probably tried this definition on themselves, they painted some kind of portrait of themselves, probably, or there was a mirror image, so there is a lot of wonderful things in the world.

DG: Could there be some kind of event in the political life, in the public life of the country, which will force the Piknik group to speak out?

E.Sh.: It seems to me that a rare artist lives in harmony with what is happening. But this does not mean that he should draw posters. That is, for example, there are newspapers, feuilletons for this, a person writes, responds to the topic of the day. If everyone does only this, then it will turn out to be something similar to perestroika films that are impossible to watch.

DG: Let's digress from politics, back to music. I also wanted to ask you: there is a "Morse Code" single, there is a "Morse Code" tour, will some big full-fledged studio album follow this, and how soon can we expect it?

E. Sh.: At least this song is supposed to be included there, the album will most likely be called differently so that there is no confusion already.

DG: Is there any material already?

E.Sh.: You see, there are materials for many albums, but, as someone said, miracles must be saved, so we try to release portions of musical information, no more than once every two years, so just two the years are coming to an end and we will now collect musical information.

DG: You don't feel like you need to go on a farewell tour, is that it?

E.Sh.: If a person said that, then he should either shoot himself or something like that. It should be one, farewell tour, I think.

DG: What can we expect, I want to understand: will the Piknik group say goodbye to us soon, or do we still have a lot of time to listen to you?

E.Sh.: It's always a little strange when anyone, let's call it a loud word "creator", in any case, stops some kind of activity, except for some diseases or something else. If he is in good health, it seems to me that nothing can force him to finish, so to speak, his story.
